Lehigh University는 미국 펜실베니아주의 베슬리햄이라는 곳에 위치한 작은 사립대학으로 1865년에 설립되었습니다. US News & World Report 2021랭킹의 Best National Universities에서 49위를 기록해 미국 Top 50위에 드는 명문사립대학입니다. 대학 학부생 및 대학원생의 등록인원이 6,953명이고, 학생과 교수의 비율이 9:1이라 교실안팎으로 보살핌을 받을 수 있는 분위기가 조성되어 있습니다. 2019년 졸업생의 평균 초봉이 6만 7천불로 기록되었으며, 40%의 학생들이 해외 경험을 갖고 거의 절반가량은 인턴쉽이나 연구와 같은 응용된 일과 관련이 있습니다. 이 대학은 적은 규모에도 NCAA Division I의 대학스포츠팀을 가지고 있으며, 2019년 입학생의 클래스 프로파일을 보면, 15,649명의 지원자가 있었으며, 이중 32%가 합격을 했습니다. 그리고, 신입생이 2학년으로 등록하는 비율을 보여주는 Retention Rate도 93%로 비교적 학생들의 만족도가 높은 것으로 나타났습니다.

리하이대학은 내년인 2021년 가을학기 신입생 모집을 위한 입학 전형에서 미국의 다른 많은 대학과 뜻을 같이하여, SAT/ACT 점수 제출을 학생의 결정에 맡기는 Test-Optional Policy를 채택했습니다.
The SAT and ACT will be optional for first-year and transfer applicants for the Fall 2021 semester.
In response to the ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic to in-person SAT and ACT testing, and The College Board’s decision to not offer at-home administration of the SAT, Lehigh will adopt a test-optional policy for the SAT and ACT for the 2020-21 academic year.
First-year and transfer applicants for the Fall 2021 semester, with the exception of prospective student-athletes, can choose whether or not to submit SAT or ACT test scores for consideration. Applicants to the accelerated program with SUNY Optometry must still submit either SAT or ACT scores. International students who attend schools where English is not the primary language of instruction will still be required to submit results from either the TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo exams.

영어가 모국어가 아닌 외국 학생의 경우 공인영어성적을 제출해야 하며, 제출 점수는 TOEFL 90 이상, IELTS 7.0 이상이며, 이 시험들을 볼 수 없는 지원자의 경우 Duolingo English Test 성적으로 대체할 수 있습니다. 이 점수는 110점 이상을 예상해야 합니다. 어떤 대학들은 SAT, SAT 과목 시험, ACT 성적으로도 영어 숙련도 자격 요건으로 인정을 한다고 하지만, 리하이대학은 이 시험 성적은 받지 않습니다.

그리고, 입학신청에서 학생들이 많은 시간을 쓰게 되는 에세이 주제에 대해서 알아보겠습니다.
리하이대학의 2021년도 입학전형에서는 총 세 개의 에세이를 작성해야 합니다. 첫 번째 에세이는 150단어, 두 번째 에세이는 250단어, 세 번째 에세이는 300단어로 제한하고 있어서 500-700단어를 요구하는 모대학의 에세이보다는 왠지 작성이 수월할거라는 느낌을 받습니다. 하지만, 달리 생각하면, 짧은 문장으로 많은 생각과 스토리를 압축해야 하기에 에세이 작성이 만만치는 않습니다.
Prompt 1: How did you first learn about Lehigh University and what motivated you to apply? (150 words)
Prompt 2: A compelling characteristic of Lehigh’s community is that our students want to be actively engaged in their learning, their community, and the world. Our students look to make a difference and have a real-world impact. We expect our community to challenge your viewpoint, your naturalized assumptions, and the way that you see the world around you. In the words of Lehigh’s President, John Simon, “The murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis has shaken our nation, and brought into harsh relief the life-threatening, systemic racial injustice that affects the lives of so many every day. Members of our community are angry and fearful, and we will support them…We need to make Lehigh University an actively anti-racist institution. By this, we mean actively speaking out and addressing acts of racism, racist comments, racist practices, policies and procedures.”
What would you want to be different in your own country or community to respond to issues of inequality, inequity, or injustice? (300 words)
Prompt 3: With the understanding that you are able to change colleges at Lehigh after the first year, please briefly describe why you chose to apply to the first choice college or major above. (200 words)
첫 번째 질문은 리하이 대학을 어떻게 알았고, 지원한 동기가 무엇인지에 관한 것으로 어느 대학으로 지원을 결정했다면, 누구나 할 수 있는 생각이니 잘 정리해서 150단어가 넘지 않도록 작성하시기 바랍니다.
두 번째 질문은 상당히 긴 지문으로 뭔가 복잡해 보이지만, 요점은 간단합니다. 입학사정관은 지원자가 자신의 나라나 사회에 어떤 변화를 보고 싶은지를 알고 싶어합니다. 주제가 약간은 시사나 정치적인 이야기를 할 수도 있지만, 사회에서 불합리하다고 생각했던 점을 자신의 목소리로 얘기를 하는 것이 좋습니다. 자신이 언급하는 사건이나 이슈가 자신에게 직접 영향을 주지 않더라도 시사 문제에 대해 관심이 있으며, 이를 알기 위해 무던히 노력하고 있음을 보여주는 것이 중요합니다.
세 번째는 자신이 선택한 전공 분야에 대한 것입니다. 물론, 1년 이후에는 칼리지나 전공을 바꿀 수 있겠지만, 처음 왜 이 전공을 선택했는지 이유를 적는 공간입니다.
