오늘은 캐나다의 명문대학교 University of British Columbia UBC에 있는 한국학 센터인 Centre for Korean Studies CKR의 Visiting Scholar Program에 대해서 말씀드리겠습니다. 솔직히 그 동안 UBC CKR로 방문학자를 보내려고 했었는데 UBC의 한국학센터는 항상 자리가 없다는 식으로 한국 방문학자를 초청하는데 매우 인생했습니다. 그런데 현재 진행상황을 보니 조금은 분위기가 달려주 보이는데 그래도 방문학자 진행이 쉽다고는 말씀드릴 수 없습니다. 그래도 전보다 나아진 것 같으니 다시 한번 설명을 드리겠습니다.
캐나다 밴쿠버는 우리나라 공무원이나 일반 직장인들 교수들이 선호하는 곳입니다. 그러나 안타깝게도 방문학자에 대한 개념도 약하고 그래도 한국학센터가 있는 UBC는 공식적으로 프로그램을 제공하는데 자리가 없다고 맨날 입학지원을 사양하였습니다. 그런데, 지난번에 보니 북한의 교수들은 초청해서 그들이 UBC에서 잘 지내도록 도와주고 있더군요. 한국의 교수들은 잘 못가도 북한의 교수들은 희소성이 있어서 가치가 있나 봅니다.
UBC의 CKR은 Policy School산하의 Institute of Asian Research에 속해있는 연구소입니다. 그러므로 여기서 초청하고 진행하는 것은 담당하고 있습니다. 이 CKR에서 추구하고자하는 바를 잘 이해해야 이 곳에 지원할 수가 있습니다. 아무나 지원할수가 있는 것이 아니므로 아무리 캐나다 밴쿠버로 가고 싶다고 하셔도 안되는 것은 안되는 것입니다. 그럼 학교에서 이야기하는 CKR 방문학자 프로그램에 대한 정리를 말씀드리겠습니다.

위에서 볼 수 있는 것처럼, UBC CKR방문학자 프로그램은 주로 아카데믹한 분들, 즉, 교수이거나 한국학관련 박사학위 이상의 분들과 교류를 위해서 만든 것이고 대학원생과 학부생들에게 조언이나 초청강연을 통해서 교육적 기획를 제공해야 하고 CKR 교수님들과 리서치 프로젝트등을 같이 협력해야 합니다. 초청강연은 물론 영어강연이라고 생각하셔야 할 것입니다. 그리고 교수님들과 협력하기 위해서도 영어실력은 반드시 필요하겠지요.
물론 기본적으로는 박사학위이상의 교수분들이 우선순위이나 예외적으로 언론인들, 공무원들, 그리고 사립기관의 연구원들도 초청이 될 수 있습니다. 불가능한 것은 아니므로 도전해볼 수 있겠습니다. 물론 말씀드렸지만 항상 아카데믹한 부분을 먼저 우선하다보니 비아카데믹분야에서 오신 분들의 지원을 항상 뒷순위로 처리해서 문제이지요. 그럼 만약에 초청이 된다면 방문학자 비용이 얼마인지 알아보겠습니다.
Visiting Scholar Fee Breakdown
Application Fee – CAD $500
IAR Appointment Fee – CAD $1000
IAR Monthly Fee – CAD $1200 ($100/month x 12)
CKR VS Fee – CAD $1000 (VS with Official Partnership) / CAD $2000 (VS without Partnership) / CAD $3500 (VS from non-academic inst.)
즉, 지원서비 500캐나다달러는 다 내야하는 것이고, UBC와 관련있는 기관에서 오면은 3200캐나다달러를 내고, 관련이 없는 연구기관에서 오는 분들은 4200캐나다달러를 내야하고, 언론이나 공무원등 비아카데믹한 분야에서 오신 분들은 5700캐나다달러를 내야합니다. 캐나다달러의 환율이 높지 않기 때문에 미국보다는 비용이 저렴합니다. 물론 여기도 마찬가지로 연구공간이나 사무실을 제공하지는 않습니다. 그럼 입학지원 절차를 알려드리겠습니다.
Applications should include:
A cover letter
A research proposal that includes research title and an abstract of the proposed research in the length of 300-500 words. This should include a rationale for why this research should be conducted or written up at UBC.
Curriculum Vitae (English and Korean)
A letter from the president, faculty dean, or department head confirming that the Visiting Associate will be on leave for the duration of the appointment term as Visiting Associate. Be sure that the letter clearly shows the exact date (Feb. 1-Jan. 31 or Aug. 1-Jul. 31).
An evidence of prior agreement from CKR Faculty Sponsor.
All applicants must acquire an advisor sponsorship from CKR faculty members. An applicant should contact a UBC CKR faculty member whose academic field is related to your research. After the professor’s approval, one must submit evidence by submitting a captured file of the email exchange.
* “CKR faculty member” is interpreted to mean any faculty member listed on the “People” page of the CKR website (https://ckr.iar.ubc.ca/people/).
A wire transfer receipt of the application fee. The non-refundable application fee of CAD $500 must be made by wire transfer to “The University of British Columbia”. Detailed wire transfer instructions will be sent to your email address upon receiving documents 1-4 via email. To ensure there is no deficiency with your payment, please pay any charges related to the wire transfer. No application will be considered if proof of payment (wire transfer receipt) is not provided with the hard copies.
A document that includes information of the applicant (name, birth date, passport number), address, duration of visit (beginning year/month/day – ending year/month/day). **Do not send by email

Please send the documents 1-4 via email first. Once we receive your email, we will send you the wire transfer instructions and a link to securely upload documents 6 and 7.
위의 서류중에서 가장 중요한 것은 역시 빨간 색으로 칠한 CKR교수님으로부터의 사전 승낙을 증명하는 것입니다. 그러므로 엄밀하게 말하면 두번의 중요한 승낙 절차가 필요한 것입니다. CKR교수님을 컨택해서 초청을 승낙받아야 하고 그것을 바탕으로 CKR에 요구되는 서류를 보내서 최종 승인을 받아야 하는 것입니다. 그리고 지원서비 500캐나다달러를 수수료까지 결제하고 보내야 하는데 이 비용은 초청이 안되도 환불되지 않습니다. 그러니까 잘 생각하시고 지원하셔야 합니다.
♦ 2020-2021 Visiting Scholar Schedule
UBC CKR의 입학지원시기는 위와 같습니다. 1년단위인데 2021년 2월 1일부터 2022년 1월 말까지 체류하고 싶으면 입학지원서를 7월31일까지 제출해야 합니다. 그리고 내년 여름 8월 1일부터 그 다음해 7월 말까지 체류하고 싶으면 1월 31일까지 입학지원을 해야 합니다. 학교에서 요구하는 서류를 하나씩 잘 준비하시고 입학지원 도전하여 초청받으시길 바라겠습니다.
