오늘은 반달곰원장이 한국의 공무원, 기자, 교수, 전문직 종사자분들이 갈 수 있는 방문학자 프로그램을 소개해드리겠습니다. 작년에 반달곰원장이 방문했었던 바로 듀크대학교인데 그동안 소개해드렸던 political science program과는 다른 Asian/Pacific Studies Institute에서 진행하는 방문 학자 프로그램을 소개해드리겠습니다.
먼저 Duke University 의 Asian/Pacific Studies Institute는 무엇을 하는 곳인지 알아보겠습니다. 보통 줄여서 APSI라고 하는데 제목그대로 아시아 태평양지역에 대한 연구활동과 학습에 초점을 맞추고 있는 연구기관입니다. 1981년에 시작해서, 오늘날 듀크대학교 ASPI에 40여명의 핵심 교수진과 지역대학교의 연관 교수가 20여명이 있을 정도로 발전하였습니다. 미국의 남동부에서는 East Asia에 대한 연구와 학술기관으로는 가장 큰 센터입니다. DUKE APSI 의 주요 미션을 살펴보면 아래와 같습니다.
1. To foster an academic community that ranks in the top tier among US universities
2. To provide or promote the highest standards of undergraduate and graduate education in East Asian studies
3. To develop a robust community of East Asia-related scholarship, and to promote awareness of East Asian culture in the Duke and Triangle communities
4. To provide academic and cultural resources relating to East Asia to schools, colleges, and universities in the southeastern United States.

이런 미션을 가지고 East Asia지역에 대한 연구활동을 하는데 2016년도 부터 Duke Korea Research Fellows Program을 시작하였습니다. 그래서 한국의 professionals(예를 들면, journalists, researchers, librarians, civil servants, educators)들의 지원을 받고 있는 것입니다. Duke Korea Research Fellows Program에 오시면 아래와 같은 활동과 지원을 받습니다.
The Korea Research Fellowship includes:
● Active mentoring by faculty coordinators and meetings with designated faculty advisor
● Engagement in regular seminar meetings through the Korea Forum, including an opportunity to present research to an encouraging audience
● Regular reporting for funding agencies
● Access to DUKE libraries
● DUKE University ID Card that will allow the scholar to access facilities at Duke. Additional fees may apply for accessing certain facilities such as athletic facilities.
● DUKE email address and on-campus internet access
● Audit up to one Duke University course per semester (subject to instructor approval)
● Access to all talks and seminars sponsored or cosponsored by the APSI, AMES, and the Korea Forum
그럼 가장 중요한 비용에 대해서 말씀드리겠습니다. Duke Korea Research Fellows Porgram의 비용은 1년에 5000달러입니다. UC Berkeley한국학센터, UCLA한국학센터, USC한국학센터의 방문학자 프로그램이 1만불이 넘어가는 것에 비하면 반값밖에 되지가 않습니다. 게다가 집값, 생활비등은 캘리포니아 지역보다 훨신 저렴합니다. 그러므로 경제적인 부담을 덜면서 편하게 학국학을 공부하면서 방문학자로서의 삶을 누리고 싶은 분들은 적극적으로 듀크대학교 APSI 방문학자 프로그램을 고려하시길 바랍니다. 반달곰원장은 듀크대학교 방문학자프로그램의 전문가로서 친절하게 도와드리겠습니다.
