요즘은 보이스피싱 스트레스가 무지 심한 시대입니다. 갖가지 교묘한 방법으로 사람들을 현혹하여 돈을 빼가는 나쁜 사람들이 참으로 많습니다. 제 친구 한명도 은행엡을 통해서 업무를 볼려다가 그만 이상한 사이트로 연결되어 많은 돈을 인출당했습니다. 당하는 사람만 억울한 피해를 입으니 보이스피싱은 정말 조심해야 겠습니다.
그런데 이 보이시피싱이 유학업계에도 마수의 손을 뻗치네요. 특히 미국에 나가있는 유학생들에게 최근 보이스피싱 사건이 일어났는데 미구비자에 대해서 잘 모르다보니 얼떨결에 당하게 되었나 봅니다. 이런 사건들이 많다 보니 미국 정부에서 나서서 아래와 같이 주의를 당부하고 있습니다.
Today we received an special email from the Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) with regard to incidents of fraud associated to the collection of the I-901 fee. Please be aware that there are scammers falsely contacting students to demand money so the student will not be deported. This was reported in the Chicago area and the scammers used the ‘Location Services’ app on students’ cellular devices to find the students’ location and threaten them with continued pursuit if they do not receive the money. The incidents are currently under investigation by the Chicago Police Department and SEVP intends to cooperate fully and will provide additional information to schools as it becomes available.
Coincidentally, these fraud incidents began after SEVP sent out the first batch of I-901 Non?Payment letters in mid-April. The I-901 Non-Payment letters request that students in active status, with no I-901 payment on their record, pay the I-901 Fee. The letter also states that failure to remit the payment within the time allotted will result in the termination of the student’s SEVIS record and/or possible deportation. Below, please refer to the detailed instructions when handling any future fraud incidents, should they arise:
Red Flag 1
Disregard any phone call from a person attempting to collect an I-901 Fee on behalf of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and SEVP. The process that SEVP has in place for the collections of unpaid I-901 Fees does not involve contacting students via phone to threaten or request money.
Red Flag 2
Additionally, scammers are reportedly requesting up to $4,000 in I-901 Fees; an I-901 Fee is $200 at the most. The only time the requested Fee will be more is if a student has a returned check. The additional amount would be limited to small, related service charges for bank processing.
실제로 반달곰원장이 MBA를 했던 시카고 지역에서 사기사건이 발생하였는데 국제학생들에게 전화를 해서 SEVIS FEE $4000를 요청하였다고 합니다. 그리고 $4000를 안낼 경우에는 곧 미국에서 추방될 것이라는 말로 학생들을 협박하고 현혹하였다고 합니다.
미국에서 유학을 하면 비작 무엇인지, 불법체류가 무엇인지 많이 불안 한 것이 사실입니다. 그래서 4000달러의 SEVIS Fee 를 내지 않으면 추방된다라고 하는 이야기를 들으면 국제학생들은 당연히 불안하게 되고 순간 실수로 돈을 입금할 수가 있으므로 주의하여야 합니다. 이런 보이스피싱 전화를 받을 경우에는 지체없이 학교의 국제학생담당자를 찾아가 신고해주길 바랍니다.
이런 보이스피싱은 미국비자 프로세를 조금만 이해하면 얼마나 엉터리 이야기인줄 금방 알 수 있습니다. 그러나 대부분 학생들은 비자 프로세스를 깊이 새기지 않기에 덜컹 걱정이 되는 것입니다. 미국 비자 프로세스를 간단히 알려드리면 아래와 같습니다.
1. 비자신청서 DS160 온라인 작성
2. SEVIS Fee 신용카드 납부(현금으로 받지 않습니다) 학생비자-$200, 방문학자등 교환비자-$180
3. VISA Fee 시티은행에서 구매- 현금으로만 구매
4. 그 다음 비자인터뷰 예약
