University of Florida 입학정보 – SAT/ACT 성적 제출과 에세이

US News & World Report 2020랭킹의 Best National Universities에서 30위를 차지한 University of Florida는 미국 플로리다주의 Gainesville에 위치한 명문 공립대학입니다. 이 대학은 1853년에 설립되었고, 전체 학부생의 인구가 35,405명으로 규모가 큽니다.
96%의 신입생이 두 번째 해에도 UF에 등록하여 보유율이 높은 대학에 속합니다. UF에 입학하기 위해서 어떤 자격 조건을 갖추고 준비를 해야 하는지 살펴보겠습니다.
UF의 신입 학부생 지원은 8월 중순부터 열렸습니다. 입학신청은 Coalition Application 혹은 Common Application 중 선택해서 지원할 수 있습니다.
입학신청 시 주의를 기울여야 할 일정은 아래와 같습니다. 신청 마감은 11월 1일까지이고, 지원자가 알아야 하는 기타 주요한 일정입니다.

입학 신청이 마감이 되어도 11월 1일 이후 3월 1일 이전까지는 자리가 남아 있다면, 입학신청을 받아 줍니다. 11월 1일까지 지원을 마친 신청자의 입학 합격 통보는 2월 26일에 예정되어 있습니다.
UF에서 입학 신청 시 Coalition이나 Common Application을 통해야 한다고 앞서 설명했는데요. 신청서에는 프로파일 섹션이 있습니다. 이곳에 개인정보, 연락처, 연령 성별과 같은 인구통계학적 정보, 국적, 고등학교정보, 대학 학업, 재정지원, 명예와 특징, 학문적 관심 및 과외활동 등을 기재하게 됩니다.
그리고, UF의 Supplement 부분에서 추가적인 단문에세이의 질문이 있는데 입학 심사 시 지원자에 대해서 더 많이 알 수 있는 부분이기도 합니다.
어떤 Application 플랫폼을 선택하느냐에 따라 작성하게 되는 에세이 주제가 조금 달라집니다. Coalition Application과 Common Application에서 요구하는 에세이 Prompts는 다음과 같으며, 이중에서 하나를 골라 Personal Essay를 작성해야 합니다.
[Coalition Application – UF Supplement Essay Prompts]
- Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.
- Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution
- Has there been a time when you’ve had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs?
- What is the hardest part of being a teenager now? What’s the best part? What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)?
- Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.
[Common Application – UF Supplement Essay Prompts]
- Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
- The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
- Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
- Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
- Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
- Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
두 플랫폼의 질문이 달라 보이지만, ‘Topic of Your Choice’라는 질문이 두 플랫폼에서 발견됩니다. 이는 어떤 토픽을 선택하든지 문제가 되지 않는다는 의미로 이는 달리 말해서, ‘내용’은 문제가 된다는 것입니다. 지원자 자신에 관한 것이라면, 무엇을 쓰든 자유로 가장 인상적인 내용을 담을 그런 주제를 선정하는 것이 중요해 보입니다.
그리고, UF Supplement 에세이가 있는데, 5개의 짧은 질문으로 구성되어 있습니다. 각 Prompt는 250단어 제한으로 작성해야 합니다.
· List and describe your community service activities. Please include your role in the activity and level of responsibility.
· List and describe each job you've had, including dates of employment, job titles and hours worked each week.
· [OPTIONAL] Do you have any employment or family obligations that limit your participation in extracurricular activities? Please describe.
· List any programs or activities that helped you prepare for higher education, such as University Outreach, Talent Search, Upward Bound, etc.
· Is there any other information for the Admissions Committee to consider when your application is reviewed?
많은 학생이 궁금해하는 SAT/ACT 점수 제출에 관해서는 아래의 기사가 도움이 될 것입니다. 현재 미국 대부분의 주에서 Test-Optional을 발표하고 있지만, 플로리다주와 와이오밍주는 기존 입학전형 절차를 고수하고 있다고 합니다. 아래 기사는 Orlando Sentinel에 2020년 9월 11일에 기재된 내용인데, 아직까지 UF의 홈페이지에도 이렇다할 업데이트가 없는 것으로 보아 UF에 지원하는 학생은 SAT/ACT 점수 제출을 필수로 알고 준비해야 합니다.
Florida now stands nearly alone in its refusal to drop the requirement that high school seniors submit an ACT or SAT score as part of their state university applications.
Most other states have adopted test-optional policies for their universities this year because the coronavirus pandemic has led to the cancellation of many ACT and SAT test sessions. That has limited the ability of high school students to sit for the exams.
Florida and Wyoming are the only two that have not, according to FairTest: The National Center for Fair & Open Testing.
거기에 UF는 학생이 12월 15일까지 제출하게 되는 SAT와 ACT의 점수도 개입을 하며, 지원자가 만들어야 하는 최소 점수가 있습니다.
- Effective with the Fall 2018 entering class, the university will require the following minimum scores on the redesigned SAT: Reading = 24, Writing and Language = 25, and Math = 24.
- On the ACT, a minimum score of 19 on the Reading section and 19 on the Math section.
- Official test scores must be requested from the testing agencies to be sent to the Office of Admissions no later than December 15 for priority admission consideration. If your test scores are requested after December 15, your application will be considered on a space-available basis. Taking the SAT on December 5 or the ACT on December 12 will meet this deadline provided students request scores be sent by December 15.
