Duke University는 미국 노스캐롤라이나주의 더럼에 위치한 사립 연구대학으로 US News & World Report 2020랭킹의 Best National Universities에서 공동 10위를 차지한 미국 최상위권 명문대학입니다.
듀크대학은 문과대학인 Trinity College와 공과대학인 Pratt School of Engineering으로 나뉘어 있습니다. 지난 입시에서 입학 지원자수는 41,651명으로 입학성공율은 7.8%로 전체 합격자수는 3,229명이었습니다. 이중 절반이 넘는 1,744명이 듀크대학에 등록했다고 합니다. 입학 전형은 Early Decision(조기전형)과 일반(Regular)으로 나뉘는데 Early Decision(ED)의 합격율이 18.4%라면, Regular Decision은 6.4%로 더 경쟁이 치열합니다. 듀크대학이 희망하는 대학 1지망이라면, ED로 지원하는 것이 훨씬 유리합니다.
전체 학부생수는 6천 9백명가량으로 국제학생 비율은 11.5% 정도 됩니다. 듀크대학 지원은 Common Application이나 Coalition Application을 통해 진행하며, 지원 전에 다음 사항을 먼저 결정하고 신청 계획을 세워야 합니다.

2021학년도 가을학기 입학을 위한 ED 신청 마감일은 11월 16일까지이고, RD 마감일은 1월 4일까지입니다.
신입학으로 Trinity College에 지원을 하며 Regular Decision으로 듀크대학 학부 과정에 지원했을 때 필요한 것들에 대해서 알아보겠습니다.
SAT나 ACT점수, 추천서, 에세이 등이 필요하며, 특별활동에 관한 것은 신청서에 최대 10개까지 적을 공간이 있습니다. 듀크대학은 별도의 이력서는 받지 않기에 수상내역이나 성과 등은 추가정보란에 기재해야 합니다.
SAT나 ACT 점수 제출에 대해서는 2020-2021 어드미션 사이클에서 신입생으로 지원하는 학생들은 Optional입니다. 즉, 2021학년도 가을학기 입학생은 SAT 시험 성적을 제출하지 않아도 되며, 입학 대상자를 고려할 때 성적을 제출하지 않았다고 어떤 불이익을 받지 않습니다. 하지만, 변별력을 위해서 다른 입학서류에서 타 지원자보다 두각을 나타내는 부분이 있어야 합니다.

듀크에 입학신청은 Coalition Application이나 Common Application을 통해야 하는데, 두 개의 신청 플랫폼에서는 한 페이지의 개인 에세이와 듀크에 특화된 단문의 에세이 질문에 대한 답변을 요구합니다. 이 보충 에세이는 학생의 다른 지원서류와 함께 입학 신청 마감일 전에 제출하면 됩니다.
Long-Essay Prompts
Common 신청서를 통해 지원하는 학생의 2020-2021 에세이 질문은 그 전해 년도와 똑 같은 Prompts를 사용하며, 아래의 7가지 중 하나를 골라 답변을 하면 됩니다.
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, please share your story.
2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
4. Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma — anything of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
위의 7가지 프롬프트 중 자신의 의견을 가장 편하게 적어 나갈 수 있는 것을 고르는 것이 좋습니다. 그리고, Coalition Application을 통해 지원하는 학생들은 다음의 5가지 프롬프트 중에서 하나를 골라 에세이를 작성해야 합니다.
1. Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.
2. Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution.
3. Has there been a time when you’ve had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs?
4. What is the hardest part of being a student now? What’s the best part? What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)?
5. Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.
두 신청 플랫폼이 달라도 마지막 질문은 똑같습니다. 지원자가 주어진 모든 질문이 마음에 들지 않는다면, 자신만의 주제를 골라 에세이를 작성할 수 있습니다. 에세이를 위한 완벽한 길이는 따로 있지 않지만, Coalition 신청 플랫폼에서는 500~550 단어 사이에서 쓰도록 권장하고 있습니다.

듀크대학의 Supplemental Essay로 모든 2020-2021어드미션 전형의 지원자에게 해당되는 필수 주제입니다. 반드시 작성해서 제출해야 하며 200단어로 에세이의 양을 제한하고 있습니다.

에세이를 쓸 때 조심할 게 있습니다. 에세이를 다 쓰면 절대 교정을 잊지 말아야 한다는 것입니다. 에세이는 짧아도 확인해야 할 게 많습니다. 오타는 없는지, 문장부호는 맞게 들어가 있는지, 읽어서 자연스러운지를 한줄 한줄 꼼꼼하게 체크하시기 바랍니다.
