오늘은 스웨덴의 Umea University라는 곳에 대해서 알아보겠습니다. 1965년에 세워진 대학임에도 스웨덴에서 다섯 번째 오래된 대학으로 알려진 곳입니다.
1965년 설립 당시에는 약 2천명의 학생 밖에 없었는데, 이제는 32,112명의 풀타임, 파트타임, 온라인 학생들이 등록된 대학으로 전부 영어로 가르치는 학위 과정이 37개나 있습니다. 8개의 스쿨과 기관으로 구성이 되어 있으며, 900개의 해외 대학과 국제 교환 협정을 맺고 있습니다. 세계에서 가장 젊은 대학 중에서 우수한 대학으로 Top 랭크된 곳이기도 합니다.
Umea University의 Umea 캠퍼스는 본교로 미국 캠퍼스를 모델 삼아 만들어졌고, 영어로 진행되는 모든 코스 및 프로그램은 우메오 캠퍼스에서 열리거나 인근 대학 병원에서 열립니다.
스웨덴 북부의 큰 도시인 Umea에 위치한 본교 캠퍼스 이외에 Umea Arts 캠퍼스, Skelleftea 캠퍼스, Ornskoldsvik 캠퍼스가 있습니다.

순위 중 Umea
Institute of Design의 경우 세계 1위, 그리고, 국제학생 만족도는 유럽내에서 5위,
Golden Age Universities에서 세계 46위로 굵직한 명성을 갖고 있습니다. 골든 에이지의 경우 Times Higher Education 데이터를
이용하는데요. 50년 ~ 80년 정도 된 학교들 대상으로
순위를 메기고 있습니다. 2018년 기록을 보니 서울대가 4위를
했었네요. 역사는 짧지만, 그만큼 우수한 대학으로 평가받고
있다고 여기면 될 것 같습니다.
영어로 진행되는 학부 과정은 두 가지가 있습니다. 고등학교를 졸업한 국제학생이라면, 지원 가능합니다.
- Bachelor of Science Program in Life Science 180 credits
- Bachelor Program in Fine Arts 180 credits
이 과정은 3년 동안 진행되며, 입학신청은 10월 중순 시작해서 입학년도 당해 1월 15일까지 지원을 할 수 있습니다. 지원 라운드는 2개로 국제학생의 경우 첫번째 라운드에 맞춰 지원을 해야 합니다.
Bachelor of Science Program in Life Science 과정을 예로들어 설명하면, 약 20명 입학이 가능하며, 이 프로그램 입학을 위해서는 다음의 코스를 들은 지원자여야 합니다.
Biology 2, Physics 1a/1b1+1b2, Chemistry 2, Mathematics 4, or Biology B, Physics A, Chemistry B, Mathematics D
비유럽계 학생이라면, 신청비와 학비를 납부해야 하는데요. 신청비는 SEK 900이 있고, 과정의 총 학비는 SEK405,000입니다.

Master’s Program in Business Development and Internationalisatoin의 예를 들어보면, 4번째 학기에 석사 논문을 작성하거나 선택 수업 및 논문 작성을 선택할 수 있습니다. 100% 낮동안 이루어지는 수업으로 캠퍼스는 Umea이며, 이 과정에 입학하기 위해서는 학사 학위가 필요합니다. 경영 수업이기 때문에 MGAT 제출을 요구하고 있습니다. 수업료는 SKE 180,000로 입학신청비 SEK 900이 있습니다. English Level은 6으로 TOEFL로 하면 90, IELTS로는 6.5 수준입니다. 신기한 것은 CV, Motivation Letter, 추천서 등 필요하지 않다는 것입니다. 이것을 보내도 어드미션은 고려하지 않는다고 하네요.
학교에서 10~25분 거리에 학생 하우징 지역이 위치하며, 여러 숙소 옵션에서 고를 수 있습니다.
무엇보다 우메오는 북 유럽에서가 가장 큰 스포츠 및 피트니스 시설(IKSU)이 있는데, 바로 캠퍼스 가까이에 위치합니다.
