오늘은 미국 노스캐롤라이나주 더럼에 있는 듀크대학교 후쿠아 MBA 2016학년도 입학지원일정 및 에세이 질문에 대해서 알아보겠습니다. 워낙 반달곰원장이 DUKE 대학교 방문학자프로그램으로 공무원들과 언론인, 그리고 교수님들의 수속을 도와드렸기에 많이 친숙한 대학교입니다. 바로 듀크대학교에는 유명한 비즈니스 스쿨이 있는데 Fuqua School of Business가 그것입니다. DUKE Fuqua MBA의 2016년도 입학지원일정 부터 소개해드리겠습니다.

Early action이라고 해서 다른 MBA의 얼리라운드 개념의 입학지원일정마감은 9월 15일 입니다. 이제는 한달이 채 남지를 않았네요. 1라운드 10월 14일, 2라운드 1월 5일, 마지막 3라운드는 3월 22일이 마감입니다. Early action지원에 대한 결과가 10월 26일에 발표가 되는데 약 한달 남짓한 기간만에 결과를 얻을 수 있습니다. 미국 동남부의 하버드라고 불리우는 듀크대학교 후쿠아 MBA지원에 관심있는 분들은 서둘러서 지원 준비를 마치시길 바랍니다.

다음은 에세이에 대해서 설명을 드리겠습니다. 듀크 후쿠아 MBA의 에세이는 크게 두가지로 구성되어 있는 하나는 100단어 정도의 짧은 에세이 답변 3개와 정식 에세이 2개로 구성되어 있습니다.

Application Essays

For students who start the program in 2016:

Three short answer questions and 2 essays are required from all applicants.

• Responses should use 1.5 line spacing and a font size no smaller than 10-point.
• Respond fully and concisely.
• Responses must be completed before submitting your application.
• Prepare your responses carefully. The Admissions Committee considers your answers important in the selection process.
• All essays are scanned using plagiarism detection software. Plagiarism is considered a cheating violation within the Honor Code and will not be tolerated in the admissions process.

Required Short Answer Questions

Instructions: Answer all 3 of the following questions. For each short answer question, respond in 500 characters only (the equivalent of about 100 words).

1. What are your short-term goals, post-MBA?
2. What are your long-term goals?
3. Life is full of uncertainties, and plans and circumstances can change. As a result, navigating a career requires you to be adaptable. Should the short-term goals that you provided above not materialize what alternative directions have you considered? 

First Required Essay: 25 Random Things About Yourself

Instructions: Answer the following question — present your response in list form, numbered 1 to 25. Some points may be only a few words, while others may be longer. Your complete list should not exceed 2 pages.

1. The "Team Fuqua" spirit and community is one of the things that sets The Duke MBA experience apart, and it is a concept that extends beyond the student body to include faculty, staff, and administration. When a new person joins the Admissions team, we ask that person to share with everyone in the office a list of "25 Random Things About Yourself." As an Admissions team, we already know the new hire's professional and academic background, so learning these "25 Random Things" helps us get to know someone's personality, background, special talents, and more. 
   
   In this spirit, the Admissions Committee also wants to get to know you–beyond the professional and academic achievements listed in your resume and transcript. You can share with us important life experiences, your likes/dislikes, hobbies, achievements, fun facts, or anything that helps us understand what makes you who you are. Share with us your list of "25 Random Things" about YOU.

Second Required Essay (choose 1 of 2)

Instructions: Choose only 1 of the following 2 essay questions to answer. Your response should be no more than 2 pages in length, and should reflect your knowledge of the Fuqua program and experience, and the types of activities and leadership you would engage in as a Fuqua student.

1. Why Duke: When asked by your family, friends, and colleagues why you want to go to Duke, what do you tell them? Share the reasons that are most meaningful to you.
   
   
2. Team Fuqua Principles: The Team Fuqua community is as unique as the individuals who comprise it. Underlying our individuality are a number of shared ideas and principles that we live out in our own ways. Our students have identified and defined 6 “Team Fuqua Principles” that we feel are the guiding philosophies that make our community special. At the end of your 2 years at Fuqua, if you were to receive an award for exemplifying one of the 6 Principles listed below, which one would it be and why? Your response should reflect your knowledge of Fuqua and the Daytime MBA program and experience, and the types of activities and leadership you would engage in as a Fuqua student. 
   
   
1. Authentic Engagement: We care and we take action. We each make a difference to Team Fuqua by being ourselves and engaging in and supporting activities about which we are passionate.
2. Supportive Ambition: We support each other to achieve great things, because your success is my success. The success of each individual member of Team Fuqua makes the whole of Team Fuqua better.

Optional Essay

If you feel there are circumstances of which the Admissions Committee should be aware, please explain them in an optional essay (such as unexplained gaps in work, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance).

• The Optional Essay is intended to provide the Admissions Committee with insight into your circumstances only.
• Limit your response to two pages.

장 단기 목표에 대한 짧은 답변 3개 에다가 정식 에세이로서 25 Random things about yourself 와 Why Duke/Team Fuqua Principles 를 작성해서 제출해야 합니다. 25 Random things about yourself는 자신에 대해서 표현하고 설명하는 25개를 넘버링하여 나열하면 됩니다. 표현하는 방식은 자신의 방식대로 하면 됩니다. 자신을표현할 수 있는 개성있는 방법이 요구됩니다.

그리고 두번째 에세이로는 아무래도 Why DUKE에 대해서 많이 작성할 것입니다. 가족 친구 동료들이 왜 듀크 MBA로 가느냐라고 물었을때 과연 무엇이라고 답할 것인지를 고민해서 작성해야 할 것입니다. 자기만이 어필할 수 있는 명분이나 이유를 녹아들게 하면 좋은 에세이를 만들 수 있습니다.

마지막은 다른 MBA와 마찬가지로 optional 한 케이스로서 입학사정위원회에 자신의 상황을 설명할 필요가 있을때에만 작성해서 제출하면 됩니다. 특별한 이유가 없으면 구지 작성하지 않아도 됩니다. 

현재 DUKE Fuqua MBA는 Class size가 437명이고 평균 나이는 29세입니다. 평균 직장경력은 5년이며 국제학생 비율이 40%입니다. 학생들의 GMAT성적 80% 는 640점에서 750점 사이입니다. 직장경력이 좋고 GMAT성적이 650점이상이고 인터뷰에 대해서 자신이 있으면 Early action에 지원하시길 바랍니다. 합격가능성이 있기에 나머지 에세이 등 입학지원서류 준비를 잘 작성하면 됩니다. 물론 700점이상이면 좋지만 GMAT은 하나의 평가기준일 뿐입니다. 너무 GMAT점수에 위축되어 가고 싶은 MBA에 지원도 못하느 실수는 하지 않으시길 바랍니다.
