미국의 50개 주중에 가장 작은 주중에 하나인 델라웨어주. 뉴욕주, 펜셀베니아주 아래에 있는 델라웨어주는 작은 사이즈때문에 사람들이 잘 모릅니다. 그러나 델라웨어는 미국의 첫번째 주로서 세계적인 기업 듀퐁이 있는 곳입니다. 세계적인 화학회사 듀퐁에서 주민들의 세금을 다 내주기때문에 델라웨어주에는 소비세가 없습니다.
바로 델라웨어주에 있는 명문대학교가 델라웨어대학교(University of Delaware) 입니다. 이 UD에는 오래되고 유명한 부설어학원이 있는데 바로 English Language Institute(ELI)입니다. 반달곰원장이 미국으로 어학연수 온 곳이 바로 UD ELI입니다. 바로 이 델라웨어대학교가 이번에 값진 상을 받았습니다. 이 ELI에서 소개하고 있는 수상소식을 전달해 드리면 아래와 같습니다.
UD is among five universities recognized with a top internationalization award:
“NAFSA’s 2015 Senator Paul Simon Awards for Comprehensive Internationalization will be presented to five U.S. universities and colleges, including the University of Delaware, for excellence in integrating international education across all aspects of college and university campuses.
…UD was recognized for a comprehensive approach to international education guided by the 2008 Path to Prominence strategic plan, which called on the campus community to “foster knowledge and awareness of the economic, environmental, political, cultural and social issues that face the world, and the skills to address them.”
The winning application cited Delaware’s progress since that time, including the establishment of the Institute for Global Studies (IGS) in 2009, the reorganization of the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS), and re-opening of the Wright House, a campus hub for international activities.
Long known as a leader in study abroad, the University also shared details of new, innovative programs such as the English Language Institute’s CAP Cohort Model, UD World Scholars Program, Delaware Diplomats, Globex Fund, UD Africa, Fulbright Initiative, and expanded opportunities for undergraduate global engagement, including micromesters, internships and service learning fostered by membership in the Clinton Global Initiative and the Taillores Network.
“We have worked hard to build the infrastructure and opportunities that support a culture of global engagement,” said Nancy Guerra, associate provost for international programs, “and we are thrilled to have been recognized by our peers and NAFSA, the preeminent organization in international education…””
Internationalaization 분야에 우수한 학교에 주는 NAFSA 2015 Senator Paul Simon 상은 미국의 대학교 칼리지 중에서 5개 학교가 수상을 받습니다. 그 중에 하나를 델라웨어대학교가 수상하게 된 것입니다. 수상하게 된 명분은 대학교 전 캠퍼스에 걸쳐 international education 을 통합하는데 우수했었다는 것입니다.
그러면서 언급한 혁신 프로그램이 바로 English Language Institute’s CAP Cohort Model, UD World Scholars Program, Delaware Diplomats, Globex Fund, UD Africa, Fulbright Initiative, and expanded opportunities for undergraduate global engagement 입니다. ELI의 CAP Cohort Model도 이상을 받는데 일조를 한 것입니다. 그럼 UD가 이렇게 명예로운 상을 받도록 일조한 CAP Cohort Model에 대해서 설명을 드리겠습니다.

Conditional Admission Program(CAP) Cohort Model은 델라웨어대학교나 파트너대학교에 조건부입학을 받았거나 조건부입학을 원하는 학생들에게 일정한 프로그램을 수행하게 하므로써 영어조건 즉, TOEFL, IELTS 점수 제출을 면제해주는 프로그램을 말합니다. 그러므로 미국대학교 입학을 훨씬 수월하게 할 수 있도록 도와주는 것입니다. 반달곰원장이 UD ELI에서 어학연수할 때에도 어학연수를 하고 정규과정으로 입학하는 학생들을 여럿 보았습니다.
그럼 이 CAP Cohort Model을 통해서 입학할 수 있는 대학교 리스트를 알려드리겠습니다.
CAP 프로그램도 좋지만 일반적으로 UD ELI에 오는 학생들은 Intensive English Program(IEP) 을 많이 합니다. 오랜 역사로 체계가 확실히 잡혀있는 IEP는 학생들이 단계적으로 영어실력을 향상시킬 수 있도록 디자인되어있습니다. 그리고 일주일에 2시간씩의 튜터링시간이 제공되어 미국인과 1:1 수업을 할 수 있는 기회가 주어져 영어실력 향상시키는데 큰 도움이 되고 있습니다. UD ELI IEP과정의 2015학년도 일정을 안내해드리겠습니다.
