한국계 미국인 이민진 작가의 생애 두 번째 소설 ‘파친코’가 미국사회에 대단한 파장을 불러 일으키고 있습니다. 이 소설의 인기는 애플 TV가 8부작의 드라마로 제작되는 쾌거를 이루었고, 국내의 인기 배우인 이민호와 정은채가 주연으로 캐스팅되어 대사도 한국어, 일본어, 영어로 구성한다는 소식이 전해집니다. 철저히 아시아계 이민자가 배제된 미국 사회에서 한국의 이야기인 소설이 베스트셀러에 오르는 것도 모자라, 한국인이 출연하는 드라마로 제작된다는 뉴스는 기생충이 작년에 오스카 상을 받으면서 세계를 놀래키고, 독립영화 미나리가 현재 미국에서 현재 대단한 열풍을 만드는 것과는 다른 느낌으로 감동으로 다가옵니다. 이민진 작가는 이민자의 자녀로 자라면서 한국인이라는 정체성을 잃지 않고, 영어 이름 하나 없이 한국인으로 살고자 했던 그녀의 고집이 이런 크나큰 성공을 일궈낸게 아닌가 싶습니다.
위키피디아의 기록에 따르면, 그녀는 콜롬비아, 암허스트칼리지, 터프츠, 로욜라 매리마운트대, 스탠포드, 존스홉킨스, 코네티컷대, 보스턴 칼리지, 해밀턴 칼리지, 하버드 로스쿨, 예일대, 이화여대, 일본의 와세다 대학과 아메리칸 스쿨과 같은 여러 명문대학교와 세계 여성 포럼 등에서 작문, 문학 및 정치에 대해서 강의를 한 경험이 있으며, 현재 매사추세츠주의 Amherst College에 적을 두고 작가로 재직하고 있습니다.
이민진 작가가 재직 중인 Amherst College는 어떤 대학인지 이 대학교에 입학하려면 어떤 준비가 필요한지 알아보겠습니다.
Amherst College는 1821년에 설립된 사립의 리버럴 아츠 칼리지로 매사추세츠주에서 세 번째로 오래된 대학입니다. 원래는 남성만을 위한 학교였으나 1975년에 남녀공학이 되었습니다. 암허스트는 4년제 학부 기관으로 2018년 가을학기 기준으로 1,855명의 학생이 등록했습니다. 입학 전형은 매우 까다롭고 리버럴 아츠 대학의 대부분의 순위에서 종종 상위권에 근접하고 있습니다.
학생들은 오픈 커리큘럼의 38개의 주요한 프로그램 중에서 과정을 선택하며, 핵심 커리큘럼을 공부하거나 어떤 분배 요건을 충족할 필요가 없습니다. 또한, 그들 자신의 학제간 전공을 디자인할 수도 있습니다.

그리고, 학생과 교수의 비율이 7:1로 학생들은 교수님의 관심과 집중적인 지도를 받을 수 있는 대학입니다. 이런 대학에 대한 만족도는 당연히 높을텐데요. 신입생이 그 다음 해에도 등록을 해서 이 대학에 남는 비율을 Retention Rate라고 해서 많은 대학이 이 비율을 통해 학생들의 대학에 대한 만족도를 평가합니다. 이 대학은 97%로 상당히 높은 편입니다.
2023년 클래스의 입학에 관해 수치로 표시한 부분을 통해 대학에 대해 좀 더 생각해 볼 수 있습니다. 암허스트 칼리지는 합격율이 11%로 상당히 낮은 수치를 보입니다.

작은 대학이지만, 일반적인 학사일정 동안에 학생들이 기숙사에 거주하는 비율이 98%로 거의 대부분의 학생들이 캠퍼스에서 지낸다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
암허스트는 예술, 과학, 사회과학, 인문학 분야에서 40개의 BA 학위 과정을 제공합니다. 학생들은 한 개 이상의 전공을 학습하고, 자신만의 학제간 전공을 만들거나 독립적인 학문 프로그램을 수행합니다. 종종 대학원 수준의 작업과 동등하게 주요논문, 과학적 조사나 창의적인 작업의 형태로 성과를 드러냅니다. 다음과 같은 영역에서 전공 프로그램이 제공되고 있습니다.

위의 Classic 학과는 네 개의 전공을 제공하는데, Greek, Latin, Classic와 Classical Civilization이 있습니다.
올해 가을학기 입학은 이미 1월 초에 마감이 되었지만, 내년 가을학기 입학을 목표로 한다면, 지금부터 천천히 준비할 수 있는 시간이 될 것입니다. 입학경쟁률 11%이면, 상당히 치열해서 왠만한 스펙으로는 입학하기가 어렵습니다.
올해 입시를 토대로 내년 입시 일정도 예측 가능한데요. 신입생 입학은 Early와 Regular Decision으로 지원 가능하며, 입학신청 마감일은 다음과 같습니다.

그리고, 입학 신청은 Common Application, Coalition Application 혹은 QuestBridge Application을 통해 온라인으로 신청 가능하며, 신청에 앞서 준비해야 하는 서류 및 준비물은 다음과 같습니다.

2021학년도 입시에서는 코로나 확산의 여파로 SAT나 ACT 성적 제출을 선택사항으로 한 학교들이 많았습니다. 내년도 입시에서는 상황이 어찌 변할지 주시해야 하며, 여건이 충족된다면, 가급적 성적을 만들어 두는 것이 지원의 폭을 넓힐 수 있어 유리할 것입니다.
앞서 요즘 화두의 주인공인 이민진 작가가 Amherst에서 재직 중이라고 했고, 리버럴 아츠 칼리지의 특성 상 인문학을 중요시하는 만큼 Writing이 상당히 중요할 것입니다. 그러니 더욱 더 입학 신청시 제출해야 하는 에세이가 좀 부담스러울 수 있습니다. 온라인 지원서인 Common, Coalition 혹은 QuestBridge에서 요구하는 메인 에세이뿐만 아니라 Amherst가 모든 지원자에게 보충 Writing 샘플을 받는 것도 이해가 될 것입니다.
신입 지원자에게는 세 개의 옵션이 주어집니다 Option A, B, C가 있으며, 이 옵션 중 자신이 가장 잘 서술할 수 있는 주제 하나를 선택해서 작성해야 합니다.
Option A : Respond to one of the following quotations in an essay of not more than 300 words. It is not necessary to research, read, or refer to the texts from which these quotations are taken; we are looking for original, personal responses to these short excerpts. Remember that your essay should be personal in nature and not simply an argumentative essay.

Option B : Submit a graded paper from your junior or senior year that best represents your writing skills and analytical abilities. We are particularly interested in your ability to construct a tightly reasoned, persuasive argument that calls upon literary, sociological or historical evidence. You should not submit a laboratory report, journal entry, creative writing sample or in-class essay. Also, if you have submitted an analytical essay in response to the "essay topic of your choice" prompt in the Common Application writing section, you should not select Option B. Instead, you should respond to one of the four quotation prompts in Option A.
Option C: If you were an applicant to Amherst’s Access to Amherst (A2A) program, you may use your A2A application essay in satisfaction of our Writing Supplement requirement. If you would like to do so, please select Option C on either the Common Applications or the Coalition Application. However, if you would prefer not to use your A2A essay for this purpose and you wish to submit a different writing supplement, select either Option A or Option B. [Please note that Option C is available only to students who were applicants to Amherst’s A2A program.]
