University of Michigan-Ann Arbor는 1817년에 설립된 공립대학으로 미국 미시간주의 앤아버라는 도시에 위치합니다. 미시간주에서 가장 오래된 대학으로 1817년 설립 당시에는 디트로이트에 캠퍼스가 있었습니다. 스쿨이 앤아버로 옮긴 것은 20년 후인 미시간 테러토리가 스테이트라는 주로 승격된 1837년이었다고 합니다. 미시간 앤아버 대학교는 미국대학협회인 AAU의 설립 맴버이고 R1: Doctoral Universities-Very high research activity로 분류되는 대학으로 대내외적으로 높은 인지도를 갖고 있는 우수한 명문대학입니다.
University of Michigan은 UM, U-M, U of M, UMich라고 줄여서 불리는 대학으로 US News & World Report 2020 랭킹의 Best National Universities에서 24위를 차지했습니다. 2019년 가을학기 입학 성공율은 23%로 앞서 소개한 대학에 비해서는 비율이 다소 높아 보이지만, 여전히 입학하기 까다로운 대학에 속합니다.

미국 대학 입학 시즌이 시작되었기에 오늘은 University of Michigan Ann Arbor의 학부 과정에 입학하기 위해 무슨 준비가 되어 있어야 하는지 그리고, 올해 코로나로 인해 SAT/ACT 시험 점수 제출 등 이 대학은 어떤 정책을 펼치고 있는지 알아보겠습니다.
전례없는 코로나 확산 피해로 많은 대학들이 입학 지원자들의 불편한 점을 배려해 주고 있는 상황입니다. 그래서, 입학 절차 및 요구 조건을 조금씩 손보고 있는데요. 미시간 대학 역시 2020-2021학년도 입학신청 사이클에서 시험성적 제출 및 입학 신청 기간을 조정했습니다.
[입학신청 마감일 연기]
입학신청은 Coalition Application이나 Common Application을 통해 진행됩니다. 대부분 대학들이 보통 조기전형은 11월 1일, Regular는 1월 1일까지 마감으로 하고 있는데, 미시간대학은 많은 학생들이 입학 신청에 필요한 서류 준비를 하기에는 시간적으로 문제가 있을 것으로 여겨 시간을 조금 연장해 주었습니다. 조기는 약 보름, 일반은 한 달이라는 시간을 더 주었습니다.

[고등학교 성적증명서]
학생들이 제출하게 되는 고등학교 성적에서 2020년은 겨울/봄/여름학기에다가 잠정적으로 가을학기의 성적을 포함합니다. 하지만, 코로나가 올해 2월 이후 계속 진행되고 있는 상황에서 교실에서 이루어지는 일상의 대면 수업이 아니라 온라인 수업이나 원격 수업으로 기존의 정상적인 성적 체계로 성적표를 받을 수 없는 학생들도 있을 수 있습니다. 그래서, 고등학교에서 Pass/fail이나 학점/비학점 혹은 코로나 관련으로 생긴 기타 성적 체계로 받은 성적표에 대해서 미시간 대학은 지원자에게 어떤 불이익을 주지 않는다고 공지했습니다.
[추천서]
입학 신청 서류에서 빠질 수 없는 요소가 바로 추천서입니다. 추천서를 받으려면 추천인을 잘 알고 있어야 하는 사람으로 그만큼 관계가 아주 돈독해야 합니다. 요즘처럼 코로나로 사회적 거리 두기를 하는 시기에, 그것도 장기간 학교를 가지 않는 상황에서 선생님과의 친분을 쌓는 것이 어쩌면, SAT 시험을 보는 것보다 더 어려울 수도 있습니다. 원래는 핵심적인 학과목인 수학, 영어, 과학, 사회과학, 외국어 등의 선생님으로부터 받은 추천서를 요구하지만, 학생의 학업 능력, 잠재력, 수업에서의 성과를 직접적으로 말해줄 수 있는 사람이라면, 학교선생님이 아니라도 괜찮다고 합니다. 하지만, 부모님, 후견인, 조부모님, 형제자매나 친척의 관계에서는 추천서를 받을 수 없는 점 주의하시기 바랍니다.
[SAT/ACT]
2020-2021학년도 입학 전형 사이클에서 표준시험 성적을 제출하지 못하는 학생들도 지원할 수 있으며, 입학 절차에서 어떤 불이익도 없을거라고 합니다. 입학 심사는 학생이 제공할 수 있는 정보만을 가지고 이루어진다고 하니 SAT 시험을 볼 수 없는 상황이라면, 시험 성적을 제출하지 않아도 됩니다.
- Students will be considered regardless of their ability to test or provide test scores.
- Students may choose to not submit scores or to submit other examples of their academic progress at their discretion.
- While not required, if by the deadline a student is unable to sit for and submit an SAT I or ACT test score, they may choose to submit any standardized testing result (PSAT, Pre-ACT, APs, etc.)
- Similarly, international students who may not be able to test are encouraged to submit any predictive and/or external examination or national examination, state, provincial, national, and international exams or predicted results.
SAT/ACT 성적 제출없이, 그리고, 고등학교 성적도 학점이 아닌 통과/실패만이 적힌 것만을 가지고 대학 입학 지원자 중에서 우수한 학생을 선발하는 것이 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 그래서, 지원자는 자신의 학업 진척을 보여줄 수 있는 다른 성적이나 증거가 있다면 그것을 제출하는 것이 좋습니다. 여기에는 AS레벨 시험, A레벨 시험 등이 포함됩니다.
신청서 플랫폼을 통해 온라인으로 지원하면서 미시간 대학에 특화된 질문에 대한 답변을 달아야 하는데 이것이 바로 에세이입니다.
Common Application을 통해 진행하는 신입 지원자는 Personal Essay로 다음의 질문 중 하나를 골라 최대 650단어 이내로 에세이를 작성해야 합니다. 그리고, 250단어보다 더 길게 써야 합니다.
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
Coalition Application의 에세이 질문은 다음과 같습니다.
1. Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.
2. Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution.
3. Has there been a time when you’ve had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs?
4. What is the hardest part of being a student now? What’s the best part? What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)?
5. Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.
그리고, University of Michigan에서 요구하는 다음의 질문에 답변을 함으로써 에세이 작성을 완성해야 합니다.
1. Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. 2. Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests? (Required for all applicants)
