Cornell University 대학 입학 정보 – SAT/ACT 제출 선택 및 에세이 작성

Cornell University는 미국 뉴욕주의 이타카라는 도시에 위치한 아이비리그의 사립 연구대학으로 1865년 Ezra Cornell과 Andrew Dickson White가 설립했습니다. 설립 의도는 고전부터 과학까지, 신학에서 응용 분야에 이르는 지식의 모든 분야에서 학생들을 교육하고 사회에 기여를 하기 위해서입니다. 그 당시 인습을 벗어난 이러한 이상은 코넬의 건립 원리이기도 한 1868년의 에즈라 코넬의 인용문구에서 잘 나타나 있습니다. 그는 이렇게 말했다고 하네요. "I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study."
누구라도 어떤 학문에서든 배울 수 있는 기관을 세울 것이라는 이 말은 평범해 보이지만, 오늘날 대학이 표면적으로는 연구와 교육이라고 하지만, 내면에는 기업처럼 이윤을 목적으로 학생을 모집하고 학교를 운영하는 것과 사뭇 달라 확실히 감동으로 다가오는 부분입니다.
이런 멋진 비전을 가진 코넬대학은 US News & World Report 2020의 Best National Universities 랭킹에서 17위를 차지했습니다. 2018년 가을학기 입학 성공율은 11%로 아이비리그 대학인만큼 입학하기에 결코 쉬운 대학은 아닙니다. 내년 2021학년도 가을학기 입학에 있어 유학을 준비하는 학생들이 알아야 하는 몇 가지에 대해서 알아보겠습니다.
2020-2021학년도에 고등학교에 재학 중이거나 고등학교 졸업 후 대학이나 칼리지에서 12학점 이하로 과목 수강을 한 학생이라면, 신입생으로 코넬 대학에 원서를 접수할 수 있습니다.
코넬의 경우 온라인 원서 지원은 Common Application이나 Universal College Application(UCA)를 통해 진행할 수 있습니다. 여태까지 여러 미국 대학의 입학신청에서 언급된 Common Application 플랫폼은 잘 아실거라 봅니다. Universal College는 현재 3개의 학교가 참여하는 입학신청 플랫폼으로 코넬대학 이외에도 하버드 칼리지와 University of Charleston(WV)가 있습니다.
입학 신청 시 반드시 준비해야 하는 서류와 준비물은 다음과 같습니다.
- The School Report
- Counselor Recommendation
- Two Teacher Evaluations
- The Midyear Report, when your mid-year grades are available
- $80 application fee or fee waiver
- Required standardized test scores (only scores sent directly to us from testing agencies are accepted)
- Official secondary/high school transcript
- Cornell University Questions and Writing Supplement (CA) or Cornell Supplement (UCA)
- Items that are required by the Cornell undergraduate college or school to which you’ve applied: Interviews or portfolio and design submissions.
* SAT/ACT 점수 제출 반드시 필요한가?
많은 학생들이 궁금해할 부분이 바로 SAT/ACT 점수의 제출에 관한 것일 것입니다. 코넬대학 역시 2021년 가을학기 지원자를 위한 공식발표가 있었고, 안전을 위협받으면서 시험을 치를 필요는 없다고 합니다. 이 시험 성적 없이도 입학심사가 이루어진다고 하니 이미 본 시험 성적이 있다면, 제출하시고, 없다면, 성적 없이 지원하면 되겠습니다.
Fall 2021 Applicants: If you are considering or planning to take the SAT or ACT for the first time or to repeat testing again this year (2020), please do not feel you need to do this unless you are able to take the exam locally near your home and you feel safe in doing so. As a reminder, we will evaluate your application without standardized testing. For your health and safety, please always adhere to your local and state COVID-19 guidelines.

- challenging courses and excellent grades in each secondary school (high school) context. Note: there will be no negative interpretation for schools and students who have had only pass/fail or similar grading options during this current term;

- results from other kinds of secondary, college-preparatory, and university-qualifying testing where available and verifiable;
- care, craft, and authenticity in their writing submissions;
- and wherever practical and available, details, insight, and analysis from secondary school counselors and teachers.

1. Personal Statement
신입 지원시 반드시 작성해야 하는 에세이로 650단어 이내로 작성해야 합니다.
Please write an essay that demonstrates your ability to develop and communicate your thoughts. Some ideas include: a person you admire; a life-changing experience; or your viewpoint on a particular current event.
2. Activity Description
100-150 단어 제한을 두며, 과외활동, 봉사활동 혹은 직장경험 중 하나를 선택해서 작성하게 됩니다.
Tell us about one of your extracurricular, volunteer, or employment activities.
3. College Specific Essays
코넬대학의 어느 칼리지에 지원하느냐에 따라 에세이 주제가 달라집니다. 코넬에서 어떤 것을 공부하려고 하는지 묻는 것 주요한 핵심이지만, 지원하고자 하는 칼리지의 특정 에세이 질문을 잘 이해하고, 질문에 650 단어 이내로 답변을 다는 식으로 에세이를 작성해야 합니다.

- Cornell SC Johnson College of Business: What kind of a business student are you? The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business offers two distinct business programs, the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management and the School of Hotel Administration. Please describe how your interests and ambitions can be met through one or both of the Schools within the College.
