예일대학과 하버드대학은 어느 곳이 더 좋은 대학인지 종종 비교되는 미국 아이비리그의 명문대학입니다. 하버드는 미국의 고등교육기관 중 가장 오래된 대학이고, 예일은 세 번째로 오래된 대학입니다.
QS 세계대학 랭킹 및 기타 여러 대학평가기관에서 매번 상위권에 확고하게 자리를 잡고 있는 두 대학이기에 우열을 가리기가 어렵습니다. 아이비리그 대학은 입학하기가 상당히 까다롭고 어렵습니다. 하버드는 학부의 입학성공률이 5%라고 한다면, 예일은 6.3%라고 합니다. 학생과 교수의 비율은 둘 다 6:1로 소규모 클래스로 운영됩니다.
랭킹과 규모면에서 하버드가 약간 앞서지만, 미국 내에서는 실제로는 하버드보다 예일이 더 알아준다는 얘기도 들리곤 합니다. 둘 다 세계적인 명성이 부끄럽지 않은 훌륭한 대학이라면, 보편적으로 더 좋은 대학에 기준을 두는 것이 아니라, 전공, 경력목표, 캠퍼스생활, 예산 등을 고려해서 나에게 더 맞는 그런 대학을 고르는 게 더 현명한 방법일 듯 합니다.
US News & World Report 2020 Best National Universities 순위에서 3위를 차지한 곳이 Yale 대학입니다. 이 랭킹에서 프린스턴 1위, 하버드 2위, 콜롬비아, MIT, 예일이 공동으로 3위를 차지했습니다. 2021학년 입학 전형이 본격적으로 시작된 이 시점에서 오늘은 예일대학에 지원 시 필수적인 요소인 에세이에 대해서 알아보겠습니다.
신입생으로 지원하는 학생이라면, Coalition Application, Common Application, QuestBridge Application을 통해 지원하면서 예일에서 요구하는 짧은 질문에 대한 답변을 달아야 합니다. 이 필수의 질문은 지원자가 선택하는 애플리케이션 플랫폼에 따라 약간씩 다를 수 있다고 합니다.
2020-2021학년도의 입학전형에서 이 세 개의 신청 플랫폼에서 요구하는 에세이는 아래와 같습니다.
Coalition Application, Common Application, QuestBridge Application을 통해 지원하는 학생들은 다음의 질문에 답변을 달아야 합니다.
- Students at Yale have plenty of time to explore their academic interests before committing to one or more major fields of study. Many students either modify their original academic direction or change their minds entirely. As of this moment, what academic areas seem to fit your interests or goals most comfortably? Please indicate up to three from the list provided.
- Why do these areas appeal to you? (125 words or fewer)
- What is it about Yale that has led you to apply? (125 words or fewer)
위 첫 번째 질문에 대해서 간단히 설명하면, 예일대 학생들은 학위를 취득하는 동안 전체 36개의 과목을 이수해야 하는데, 이는 매 학기마다 4~5개의 과목을 수강해야 함을 의미합니다. 매년 대략 2천 개의 과목이 개설되어 있고, 80개의 전공이 제공됩니다. 예일에서는 STEM 전공으로 2학년 말까지 혹은 기타 다른 전공에서는 3학년 초까지 전공을 결정하지 않아도 됩니다. 과목 수강에 있어 상당히 관대하며, 아래의 분야에서 최소한 2학점을 이수해야 합니다.

학생이 어떤 분야에 관심을 갖고 있는지 알아보고자 하는 질문으로 예일에서 제공하는 전공분야 중 세 개를 고르면 됩니다. 골랐으면, 두 번째 질문에 대한 답변을 할 수 있고요. 세 번째 질문인 예일대에 지원하게 된 계기를 설명하기도 용이할 수 있습니다.
세 개의 신청 플랫폼에서 이 질문에 대한 답변을 하게 되다고 했는데요. QuestBridge Application으로 지원한 학생들은 지원신청서를 받으면 예일대 어드미션 상황을 보는 포털의 Yale QuestBridge Questionnaire를 통해 위 질문을 완성해야 합니다.
Coalition Application과 Common Application을 통해 지원하는 지원자는 200자 혹은 대략 35단어 정도의 양으로 다음의 질문에 단문으로 답변을 달아야 합니다.
· What inspires you?
· Yale’s residential colleges regularly host conversations with guests representing a wide range of experiences and accomplishments. What person, past or present, would you invite to speak? What question would you ask?
· You are teaching a Yale course. What is it called?
· Most first-year Yale students live in suites of four to six students. What do you hope to add to your suitemates’ experience? What do you hope they will add to yours?
Coalition이나 Common Application을 제출하는 지원자는 아래 제시된 두 개의 질문에 대한 짧은 에세이를 200단어 이하로 작성해야 합니다. 이는 입학위원회가 지원자에 대해 더 많이 알 수 있도록 도움을 줄 주제와 개인적인 경험을 반영해야 합니다.
1. Yale’s extensive course offerings and vibrant conversations beyond the classroom encourage students to follow their developing intellectual interests wherever they lead. Tell us about your engagement with a topic or idea that excites you. Why are you drawn to it?
2. Respond to one of the following prompts:
· 2A. Reflect on your membership in a community. Why is your involvement important to you? How has it shaped you? You may define community however you like.
· 2B. Yale students, faculty, and alumni engage issues of local, national, and international significance. Discuss an issue that is important to you and how your college experience could help you address it.
· 2C. Tell us about your relationship with a role model or mentor who has been influential in your life. How has their guidance been instrumental to your growth?
두 번째 질문은 세 가지의 선택 사항 중 하나를 골라 답변을 달아야 합니다.
Coalition Application 지원자는 위의 질문 이외에도 자신이 만든 오디오 파일, 이미지 파일이나
서류를 업로드할 수 있고, 이 업로드한 파일은 위의 메시지 중 하나에 답변을 보완하는 것으로 할 수 있습니다. 업로드한 것에 대해서 한 문장으로 표현하면 됩니다.
Coalition이나 Common Application을 통해 엔지니어링 전공에 지원하는 학생들은 다음의 질문에 250단어 이내로 답변을 해야 합니다.
· Please tell us more about what has led you to an interest in this field of study, what experiences (if any) you have had in engineering, and what it is about Yale’s engineering program that appeals to you.
예일대학은 2021학년도 가을학기 입학전형에서 ACT나 SAT 시험 결과를 요구하지 않는다고 합니다. 에세이만큼 준비가 까다로운 SAT나 ACT 시험에 대한 부담이 줄었으니 다른 입학 서류 준비에 신경 쓸 수 있는 여유가 생겼습니다.
Standardized test results : In response to the widespread disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Yale Office of Undergraduate Admissions has temporarily suspended its requirement that first-year applicants submit results from the ACT or SAT during the 2020-21 admissions cycle (Class of 2025). The policy applies only to applicants to the Class of 2025. Applicants who are unable to complete an exam or who choose not to report exam scores will not be disadvantaged. First-year applicants during this cycle may report ACT or SAT scores with their application or not.
예일대는 Single Choice Early Action이 11월 1일까지이고, Regular Decision이 1월 2일까지입니다. 이 안에 필요한 준비를 마쳐서 원서 접수 마감일 전까지 모두 제출할 수 있도록 해야 합니다.
