미국 대학 입시를 준비하면서 상당히 오랜 시간 공을 들여야 하는 부분이 있다면, 에세이입니다. 주어진 주제에 대한 내용으로 작성하는 것이 무엇이 어려운가 미심쩍을 수도 있습니다. 하지만, QS Top Universities에 따르면, 대학 입학 담당자에게 깊은 인상을 줄 수 있는 부분이 바로 대학 입학 에세이라고 합니다.
대학 입학 에세이는 주로 500단어 이내로 작성토록 하고 있으며, 학생이 선택해서 쓰는 단어들이 합격과 거절을 가르는 중요한 요소가 됩니다. 그래서, 지원하는 학생 입장에서는 에세이를 어떻게 작성할지 고민을 상당 기간 동안 하게 되는데요. 막상, 에세이가 제출되면, 입학 담당자는 몇 분 만에 읽어 버리겠죠. 짧은 시간 동안 입학을 결정하는 사람에게 나는 어떤 사람인가를 보여줘야 하는 것이니 그 부담감이 상당한 것이죠. 미국 대학 입학에서 에세이를 어떻게 써야 하는지 Top Universities에 소개된 내용을 먼저 살펴보겠습니다.

위 7가지 팁 중에서 3번의 내용은 이렇습니다. 대학들이 진정성과 사고 수준이 뛰어난 지원자를 찾기 때문에 사람들이 매번 사용했던 문구나 아이디어를 중심으로 에세이를 잡아가지 말고 자신만의 진정한 신념을 바탕으로 작성하라는 뜻입니다. 선택한 전공에 대한 자신의 결심과 갖고 있는 지식으로 입학사정관에게 깊은 인상을 줄 수 있는 기회이니 자신의 기술과 야망을 반영하고 자신이 선택한 프로그램이 미래 목표를 달성하는데 어떤 도움이 되는지 보여주는 것이 중요합니다. 4번 내용도 어찌 보면, 3번의 내용과 일맥상통할 수 있습니다. 자신이 다른 지원자와 차별화를 시키기 위해 클리셰 같은 모든 문구를 지우고 더 독창적인 것을 찾아야 합니다.
글을 써본 적이 있는 사람이라면, 6번이 왜 어려운지 쉽게 알 수 있을 것입니다. 글을 쓸 때, 서론, 본론, 결론으로 정리하고, 표현하고자 하는 주요 아이디어를 결정해서 써야 하지만, 글을 쓰다 보면, 조직적으로 작성한다는 것이 결코 쉽지 않다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 특히, 대학 입학 에세이에는 글자수를 제한하기 때문에 쓸 수 있는 단어수로 자신의 아이디어를 에세이에 담기에 버겁습니다. 그래서, 에세이에서 모든 것을 다루려 하지 않고, 한 번에 한 주제를 쓸 수 있도록 글쓰기 전에 계획을 잘 잡아야 합니다.
US News & World Report 2020 랭킹의 Best National University 랭킹의 1, 2위 대학에서는 어떤 에세이 주제를 다루는지 살펴보겠습니다.
1위는 프린스턴 대학이고, 2위는 하버드 대학입니다. 두 대학 모두 Common Application과 Coalition Application을 통해 지원을 할 수 있습니다. Common Application을 통해 지원할 수 있는 대학이나 칼리지는 900개 정도가 되고, Coalition Application은 생긴지 얼마 안되어 약 150개 정도를 지원할 수 있습니다.

1. Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. (50-150 words)
2. Your intellectual life may extend beyond the academic requirements of your particular school. Please use the space below to list additional intellectual activities that you have not mentioned or detailed elsewhere in your application. These could include, but are not limited to, supervised or self-directed projects not done as school work, training experiences, online courses not run by your school, or summer academic or research programs not described elsewhere.
