안녕하세요, 반달곰원장입니다.
반달곰원장이 얼마전에 2019년 아카데미시상식에서 영광의 작품상을 받은 그린북을 보았습니다. 그린북이 무슨 내용인지는 얼핏 알고 갔는데 그 제목 그린북이 무엇을 의미하는지는 몰랐습니다. 1960년대 흑인차별이 심하던 시절, 특히나 미국 남부로 공연을 가는 유명한 천재 피아니스트 돈설리박사를 입과 주먹으로 먹고 살아가는 이탈리아계 토니 발레롱가가 운전사로 같이 여행하는 로드무비인데 특정지역에서는 흑인만이 머물 수 있는 호텔과 레스토랑에서만 흑인인 돈설리 박사가 이용해야하는데 그에 대한 안내를 해주는 책이 바로 그린북인 것입니다.
천재적인 피아니스트이고 돈과 명성은 있지만 흑인이기에 엄청난 차별을 받는 돈설리 박사(마하설라 알리 분), 백인이지만 매달 월세를 걱정하고 가난하게 살아가는 백인 토니 발레롱가(비고 모텐손)의 특별한 케미를 보면서 영화에 푹빠졌가는데 이렇게 반달곰원장이 갑자기 영화 그린북을 언급하는 이유가 무엇일까요?
그 이유는 그린북에서 마지막 콘서트를 열기로한 장소가 바로 알라바마주 버밍험이었기 때문입니다. 오랜 역사와 전통을 가진 한 호텔에서 열리는 연주회를 위해 도착한 돈설리박사는 창고같은 분장실을 배정받고 연주회전에 식사를 하러 레스토랑에 갔는데 매우 친절하게 모든 서비스를 제공해줄 것 같은 그 호텔 지배인은 절대로 흑인은 레스토랑에서 식사는 안된다며 다른 곳에서 식사하기를 주장합니다. 바로 그 레스토랑에서 1시간후면 연주를 할 주인공에게 식사를 해서는 안된다며 차별을 했을뿐만 아니라 돈을 주며 회유를 하려고 합니다.
결국 마지막 공연임에도 불구하고 알라바마 버밍험에서의 공연을 건너뛰고 동네 로컬음식점에서 음식과 진정한 서민들을 위한 음악을 즐기며 서민과 흑인과의 삶에 대해서 다시 한번 생각하는 계기를 만드는 돈설리박사, 마하설라 알리와 그를 보자하는 토니 발레롱가 비고 모텐손의 연기를 보면서 매우 감동을 받았는데 정작 반달곰원장의 눈길을 사로 잡은 것은 바로 알라바마 버밍험이라는 지명이었습니다.
바로 그곳을 반달곰원장이 작년 12월에 방문 하였기에 그곳에 있는 명문주립대학교인 University of Alabama at Birmingham의 MBA프로그램에 대해서 말씀을 드리겠습니다. 반달곰원장이 UAB MBA를 좋아하는 이유는 바로 1년MBA라는 것입니다. 그리고 직장경력이 어느 정도 있으면 GMAT을 면제 받을 수가 있습니다. 그리고 일년에 가을 , 겨울, 봄 학기등 3번의 입학기회가 있습니다.
그리고 영어능력이 부족하신 분들은 PATHWAY를 통해서 1학기 또는 2학기 공부를 하고 입학을 할 수 있기에 2년정도의 시간을 투자할 수 있는 분들은 UAB MBA만큰 좋은 곳도 없을 것 같습니다. 그리고 서둘러서 일찍 MBA를 하고 현지에서 취업을 하고자 하는 분들은 UAB MBA가 좋습니다. 알라바마주에는 한국의 좋은 기업과 그 협력기업들이 많이 있기에 취업기회가 다른 지역보다는 훨씬 좋을 것입니다.

Application Deadlines
Fall semester - August 1
Spring semester - December 1
Summer semester- May 1
*International applicants should apply at least 6 months in advance of the deadline in order to ensure processing of all Visa paperwork.
Required Documents
Application form including 2 evaluation forms/letters of reference.
Current resume detailing work experience.
Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended sent directly by the Registrar or responsible head of the institution to the UAB Graduate School, 1720 2nd Ave. S., LHL G03, Birmingham, AL 35294-0013.
GMAT score* sent directly from the testing agency. (it is recommended that you repeat the GMAT if score is below 480).
GMAT requirement may be waived for applicants with the following:
Terminal degrees.
Master degrees from regionally accredited institutions can substitute related standardized test score for GMAT requirement.
3-5 years of demonstrated professional work experience-
Professional experience is determined on a case-by-case basis using a resume, and any requested supporting documents. Our admissions committee evaluates an individual's accomplishments, roles, and responsibilities to determine the total number of years of professional experience. UAB considers the individual's managerial responsibilities, role in setting direction & strategy, and his/her role in allocating resources. Normally, professional experience begins at the point of graduation; however, we may consider prior work experience based on type of experience. Students who wish to petition for a GMAT waiver based on professional work experience may submit a resume and unofficial transcript to Christy Manning in MBA Admissions prior to applying.
Additional Document Requirements for International Applicants only
TOEFL IBT score of 80 or IELTS of 6.5.
General academic credentials evaluation (ECE or WES report).
