Oxford College Experience 2017 - OISE

졸업 시즌으로 많은 학생들이 다음 학교로 진학하기 전 숨고르기를 하고 있는 시간입니다. 요즘 선행 학습이 한 학년을 뛰어 넘어 두 학년 넘게도 준비하는 학생들이 있다고 하는데요. 적당한 속도로 학업을 따라가면서 정말 아이들이 좋아하는 것을 할 수 있는 기회를 주었으면 합니다.
취미가 직업이 되는 사회이니 좋아하는 것을 능력으로 잘 계발할 수 있도록 지원을 해줘야 하는데요. 어제는 16세의 아이가 3D 프린터를 직접 만들어서 드론을 제작하고, 그 드론으로 대회에 참가해서 입상했다는 뉴스를 봤습니다. 아주 대견한 아이였지만, 한편으로는 이런 창조적인 아이가 결국에는 천편일률적인 평범한 성인으로 자라지 않도록 부모가 잘 이끌고, 사회가 제도적으로 많은 기회를 제공하면 좋겠다는 생각을 했습니다.
어린 학생들을 학교와 학원의 쳇바퀴에 가두지 말고, 좀 더 자유분방한 환경에서 창의적인 사고를 하고, 무엇을 잘 할 수 있는지 알게 하는 것이 말처럼 쉽지는 않습니다. 결국에는 이것저것 시키다 보면, 하나라도 잘 하는 능력을 발굴할 수 있지 않을까 싶어 많은 학원을 돌리는 부모도 있으니깐요.
오늘은 좀 더 자유스런 분위기에서 학생들이 국제적인 감각을 익히고, 영어를 갇힌 교실에서 벗어나 배울 수 있는 Summer 프로그램을 소개하고자 합니다.
지난 번에 소개한 적이 있는 OISE Oxford에서 운영하는 신나는 Summer 프로그램으로 Oxford College Experience 2017에 대해서 알아보겠습니다.
Oxford College Experience는 집중적인 2주의 기숙사 거주 프로그램으로 Oxford University의 명문 Brasenose College에서 진행됩니다. 학생들이 대학 내에서 거주하면서 공부하고, 식사하고, 잠을 자는 프로그램으로 수업이 없는 저녁 시간과 주말에는 다양한 소셜 프로그램 및 스포츠 활동을 통해 영국 문화와 사회를 경험하게 됩니다.
수업은 소규모 인원인 8명으로 진행되며, 맞춤 영어 수업 이외에도 다음의 넓은 범위에서 두 개 부분에서 지식을 쌓을 기회를 얻게 됩니다.

수업은 주당 30시간으로 다음과 같이 프로그램을 요약할 수 있습니다.
- 프로그램 기간 : 2주
- 일정 : 7월 2일 ~ 7월 15일 혹은 7월 16일 ~ 7월 29일
- 참가 연령 : 14~17세
- 영어 레벨 : B1 이상
- 학비 : 4,300 파운드
오전 수업에는 집중적인 영어 수업이 8명의 소규모 그룹 학생들에게 제공이 되며, 오후에는 위에서 언급된 토픽에서 다양한 강의 및 워크샾으로 진행이 됩니다.
일별 진행되는 수업 시간에 따른 수업 내용은 아래와 같습니다.
9.00 – 9.30 Text of the Day
Students work alone to read and analyse a text, assigned by their tutor, which leads into the topic discussed in the Current Affairs Workshop. The text is followed by a number of critical reading questions, as well as essay and debate topics linked to the text, which students can investigate later in the day.
9.30 – 10.30 Current Affairs Workshop
Students work in small groups to research information and stories related to the text of the day in order to
develop their understanding of the theme. This is done by analysing contemporary texts taken from various
different media sources and then debating and discussing the topic in greater detail.
11.00 – 11.45 Language Focus
Students work on language areas with which they have problems. This may be vocabulary fields related to the text of the day, grammar points which become obvious from their writing, issues with accent or
pronunciation, or any other areas which the tutors notice need extra attention.
11.45 – 12.30 Writing Skills
Students develop their written fluency, focussing both on formats needed to apply to university, such as a
personal statement and a CV, and those essential whilst at university, including essay, summary, review and synthesis. They also work on specific skills (e.g. developing arguments, paraphrasing, being coherent), and technical issues (e.g. proofreading, referencing, avoiding plagiarism). Students will be given a written
assignment every night for homework, to be submitted to their tutor the next morning.
13.30 – 14.30 Lecture
A one-hour session, including an exposition on a given theoretical aspect of the subject the student has chosen for the week (i.e. five different topics throughout the week). The aim of these sessions is to give students a better understanding of the main theories behind their chosen subject in order to enhance their knowledge.
14.30 – 15.30 Case Study
Having learnt key concepts in different areas, students are exposed to real-life examples of this theory in
practice, examining prominent individuals and key historical events such as Elon Musk (Entrepreneurship),
the Cuban Air-Missile Crisis (International Relations), Noam Chomsky (PPE) and Watergate (Journalism).
16.00 – 17.00 Project
Students have the opportunity to apply concepts explored in the other sessions to develop a collaborative
project in groups of 4, to be presented and recorded on the Friday. The project topics will be as follows:
Devising a presidential campaign (PPE), Presenting a crisis at a UN meeting (International Relations), Pitching a business plan (Entrepreneurship) and Presenting a news programme (Journalism).
