안녕하세요, 반달곰원장입니다.
어제는 트럼프가 예상을 깨고 샤이 트럼프들의 열광적인 지지로 대통령으로 당선되었습니다. 이 큰 사건이 강건너 불구경 할 것이 아니라는 사실이 오늘 아침 아웃룩을 여니 정말 몸서리쳐지게 피부로 다가오네요. 당장 대학교들, 특히나 반달곰원장과 비즈니스를 하고 있는 파트너 대학교들이 파트너 에이전트들을 안심시키기 위해서 이메일들을 보내왔네요.
그중에서 반달곰원장이 직접 1년동안 공부했었던 UC Berkeley IDP프로그램의 Director인 Roxanne에게서 아래와 같은 이메일이 왔습니다. 즉, 트럼프의 당선으로 많이 당황하고 놀랐다는 것과 UC Berkeley의 국제학생 국제프로그램은 트럼프가 대통령직에 취임하는 내년 1월 20일 이후에도 변화가 없을 것이니 자녀의 미국으로의 유학을 걱정하시는 부모님은 걱정 안하셔도 된다는 그런 취지의 글입니다.
그리고 이런 메세지는 Roxanne의 것으로 그치는 것이 아니라 UC Berkeley의 총장인 Janet Napolitano와 수많은 chancellor들의 공동 메시지를 공유하면서 국제학생들과 부모들의 걱정을 떨치려고 애쓰는 모습을 볼 수가 있습니다. 그 정도로 트럼프의 미국 대통령 당선은 정말 크나큰 이슈입니다. 학교에서 이렇게 안심을 시킬려고 했지만 이슬람권 국가의 학생들은 어떤 피해가 가지 않을까 걱정을 많이 하는 것은 사실입니다. 당장 학생비자 거절율이 현저히 높아진다면 정말 절망이겠지요. 그럼 UC Berkeley IDP 의 Director인 Roxanne의 메세지를 전달해 봅니다.
Dear UC Berkeley Extension IDP representative:
The election process of 2016 was truly remarkable and yielded surprising results no matter what political association U.S. citizens identified with.
As an institution committed to international education, we understand that government and political changes cause a certain level of anxiety and concern for parents and students considering travel abroad. As our representative, you will undoubtedly be asked about the political climate in the U.S. after the elections and whether there should be concerns to study abroad in the U.S.
The University of California (UC) system, Berkeley Extension and the IDPs are committed to our international programs and we welcome continued participation from students around the world. Historically, elections are respected and the transition of power is peaceful in the U.S. We are not at a point to have to worry about the future of our international programs. We also suspect that even when Trump takes power on January 20th, it will be a smooth transition. While there may be concerns about the feasibility of visas due to political discussions prior to the election, we have no reason to suspect that there would be difficulty in securing visas for study abroad programs.
Please know that we continue to strive to fulfill our mission to create a welcoming environment to all students considering a study-abroad experience in Berkeley and specifically UC Berkeley Extension and the IDP program. The City of Berkeley and the San Francisco Bay Area will continue to be a vibrant community that values student life, diversity and our international friends, students and colleagues.
It's important to note that the University of California as well as countless of colleges and universities across the nation are equally committed to diversity, internationalization and accessibility to education for students from all around the world. On this note, I'd like to share the following message from UC leaders across the state of California:

In light of yesterday's election results, we know there is understandable consternation and uncertainty among members of the University of California community. We remain absolutely committed to supporting all members of our community and adhering to UC’s Principles Against Intolerance. As the Principles make clear, the University “strives to foster an environment in which all are included” and “all are given an equal opportunity to learn and explore.” The University of California will continue to pursue and protect these principles now and in the future, and urges our students, faculty, staff, and all others associated with the University to do so as well.

위에서 보니 정말 남의 일이 아니지요! 유학갈때도 항상 완전한 곳으로 가시길 바랍니다. 왜냐하면 어느 지역에서는 계속 트럼프 대통령당선에 대해서 시위들을 할 수가 있습니다. 백인, 특히 저소득 백인들의 지지를 입고 당선된 트럼프, 흑인들과 히스패닉의 지지를 얻었으나 낙선한 힐러리. 그녀를 지지한 하는 흑인과 히스패닉계들의 시위가 계속 있을지 모릅니다. 항상 위험한 곳은 피하시고 안전한 곳에서 사시고 안전한 곳으로만 다니시길 정말 권하겠습니다. 반달곰원장도 더욱 안전하고 더욱 좋은 프로그램을 컨서링할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠습니다. 감사합니다.
