지난 4월달 토론토에서 열린 ICEF Workshop 에서 시카고에서 온 Roosevelt University 학교 담당자인 Patrick을 만나서 업무협의를 하였습니다. 루즈벨트대학교, 많이 들어보고 익숙했다고 생각했었는데 바로 반달곰원장이 시카고에서 MBA할 때 오다가다 수도없이 지나쳐간 대학교가 바로 루즈벨트대학교였습니다. 지금은 위의 사진처럼 엄청나게 높은 빌딩을 지어서 시카고캠퍼스를 확장하여 많은 학생들에게 좋은 프로그램을 제공하고 있습니다.
Roosevelt University는 미국 일리노이주 시카고와 한국교포들이 많이 살고 있는 Schaumberg 에 캠퍼스를 두고 있는 남녀공학 사립대학교입니다. 1945년에 설립되었는데 학교이름에서 알 수 있듯이 미국 전대통령인 Franklin Delano Roosvelt 와 first lady인 Eleanor Roosevelt 을 기리기 위해서 학교이름을 지었습니다. 미국에는 유달리 대통령이름을 딴 대학교들이 많은데요, 가령 예를 들면 샌프란시스코베이에 있는 John F. Kennedy University 그리고 미주리주, 펜실베니아주, 그리고 캘리포니아주 오클랜드에 있는 Lincoln University 가 있습니다. 그런데 재미있는 것은 역사가 오래되지 않아서일까요? 랭킹이나 명성은 그 대학교이름의 대통령보다도 많이 떨어진답니다.
일리노이 시카고의 Roosevelt University의 커리큘럼은 social justice를 근간으로 하고 있습니다. 학사와 석사 과정에 약 7000명의 학생이 다니고 있고, 2012년 US NEWS Midwest 대학교랭킹에서 82위에 오르기도 하였습니다. Roosevelt University에 있는 Chicago College of Performing Arts는 매우 유명합니다. 그 칼리지가 있는 새로운 빌딩(위의 사진), Wabash에 있는 루즈벨트대학교 빌딩은 교육용으로는 시카고에서 가장 높은 것이고 미국전체에서도 두번째로 높은 빌딩이기도 합니다. 그리고 세계에서 6번째로 가장 큰 아카데믹 컴플렉스라는 명예를 가지고 있습니다.
이런 Roosevelt University에는 6개의 단과대학교가 있는데 아래와 같습니다.

솔직히 이중에서 가장 유명한 칼리지는 바로 Chicago College of Performing Arts 입니다. 그래서 다음번에는 Roosevelt University의 Chicago College of Performing Arts에 대해서 안내를 해드리겠습니다. 오늘은 바로 마지막에 있는 Walter E. Heller College of Business에 대해서 말씀드릴 것입니다. Roosevely MBA가 있는 시카고에는 DePaul MBA, UIC MBA, IIT MBA, Loyola MBA, Concoed University Chicago MBA등 많이 있습니다. 물론 유명한 University of Chicago Booth MBA, 와 Northwestern Kellogg MBA를 제외하고도 말이지요.
시카고에서 공부하는, 또는 한국에서 직장다니는 모든 직장인들이 최고의 MBA는 갈 수가 없습니다. 그리고 지리적으로 다운타운이 아닌 시골에서 공부하기 싫은 분들은 시카고같이 미국에서 가장 매력적인 도시에서 문화생활을 즐기면서 공부하고 싶을지 모릅니다. 그리고 수많은 금융기업들과 제조업체, 서비스회사의 헤드쿼터가 있는 시카고에서 공부하고 싶을지 모릅니다.
그리고 GMAT점수가 훌륭하지 않아서, 아니면 심지어 GMAT점수도 없는데 경력을 위해서 MBA가 필요하신 분, 그리고 시카고에서 어학연수하면서 비용을 많이 썼기에 경제적으로 부담없는 MBA를 하고 싶은 분들도 있을 것입니다. 그런 분들에게는 Roosevelt MBA가 정말 좋은 대안이 될 수도 있습니다. 기 이유를 입학조건과 함께 말씀드리겠습니다.

- Official transcripts from <strong>all</strong> previously attended colleges and universities.
- *Individuals with a cumulative GPA lower than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale may be required to submit the GMAT (taken within the last five years). Students that have taken the GRE, LSAT or MCAT may have these test scores considered after a review. Roosevelt offers a GMAT test prep course.
- The minimum score on the internet based TOEFL is 80 with no section below 17. Some degree programs require a higher score on the writing section of the TOEFL.
- Students who take the paper-based TOEFL must have a minimum score of 550, with at least a 4.5 on the Test of Written English (TWE).
- Please have official scores sent directly to Roosevelt by ETS. Roosevelt’s school code is 1666.
- The minimum score on the Academic IELTS test is 6.5 with at least 6.5 on the Academic Writing Band.
- Please have official scores sent directly to Roosevelt by the British Council.
English Language Program
- Applicants with a TOEFL (iBT) score of at least 40 or an IELTS score of at least 3.5 may still be admitted. When they arrive in Chicago, they will take Roosevelt University's English Language Proficiency (ELP) Exam.
- Based on the exam results, they may be required to take 1-3 semesters of English language classes before they start taking classes in their major.
위에서 설명드린 것처럼 대학교 성적이 3.0이상이면 GMAT면제가 가능합니다. 그리고 그 아래라도 반달곰원장에게 문의하시면 자세히 상담해 드리겠습니다. 그리고 중요한 영어점수는 IBT 80, PBT 550, IELTS 6.5이상입니다. 그리고 영어점수가 부족한 분들도 입학허가서를 받고 시카고에 오셔서 Roosevelt University English Language Proficiency(ELP)시험을 본 후에 그 결과에 따라서 1학기에서 3학기까지 영어공부를 한 후에 전공을 공부할 수가 있습니다.
Roosevelt MBA를 받기 위해서는 총 37학점을 이수하여야 하는데 보통 한학기에 13학점 정도를 이수하니 1년 반정도걸린다고 생각하면 됩니다. 물론 더 열심히 해서 학점이수를 많이 하면 졸업을 빨리 할 수가 있을 것입니다. 그리고 Roosevelt MBA에는 Concentration이 잘 되어 있는데 Business School에서 할 수 있는 concentration이 있고 Business School이외에 다른 대학원에서 공부하여 받을 수 있는 concentration이 있어서 전통적인 비즈니스관련 concentration이 아닌 다른 전공을 세부전공으로 가지고 싶다면 Roosevelt MBA가 정말 좋은 것 같습니다. 그 부분을 설명해드리면 아래와 같습니다.

In addition to the core classes, each MBA student will complete a concentration consisting of three courses.
Within the Walter E. Heller College of Business, you can choose from many concentrations. Each concentration gives students an in-depth treatment of a specific functional area in business. The concentrations are:

- Information Systems

- Real Estate (available at Chicago campus only)
- Social Entrepreneurship
Students are able to select a concentration from other graduate programs within the university. These options create new and innovative alternatives not previously available at MBA programs in the Chicago area. They open a variety of career paths not formerly accessible to MBA graduates. The concentrations include:

- Hospitality Management (available at Chicago campus only)
- Integrated Marketing Communications
- I/O Psychology
- Managing Nonprofit Organizations (available at Chicago campus only)
- Public Administration/Health Services Administration (available at Chicago campus only)
