[미국대학가기] 미국 시카고인근의 명문 Liberal Arts 대학교 Cathage College 학교 소개 및 입학지원방법 안내

 

안녕하세요, 반달곰원장입니다. 

오늘은 반달곰원장이 지난달에 방문하고 학교를 구석구석 둘러보고 온 Liberal Arts College인 Cathage College에 대해서 말씀드리겠습니다. 반달곰원장이 학교 방문을 많이 했지만 Cathage College처럼 인상깊은 대학교도 드물었던 것 같습니다. 오대호의 하나인 Lake Michigan 바로 옆에 위치해 있어 바다같은 미시간호수를 보면서 공부할 수 있고 밥먹을 수 있고 차마실 수가 있습니다. 심지어 야외 강의장도 있어서 대자연과 같이 호흡하면서 강의를 듣더군요. 이런 환경속에서 공부할 수 있다면 반달곰원장은 바로 다시 돌아가고 싶은 마음 뿐입니다. 

그럼 먼저 우리에게 익숙하지 않은 liberal arts college인 Cathage College에 대해서 알아보겠습니다. Cthage College는 미국 시카고에서 1시간정도 거리에 있는 위스콘신주 Kenosha에 위치해 있습니다. 태생적으로 Evangelical Lutheran Church와 연과되어 설립되었는데 3000명이상의 학생들이 열심히 공부하고 있습니다. 40개 이상의 전공에서 석사학위뿐만 아니라 학사학위를 제공하고 있고 교수들은 약 150명으로 그중에 90이상은 박사학위나 최종학위 소유자들입니다.

Cathage College 순수인문대학교이기에 우리가 알고 있는 메이저 랭킹에서는 잘 볼 수는 없지만 그래도 Cathage College만의 자랑스러운 랭킹이 있어서 알려드립니다.

Rankings

The Institute for International Education placed Carthage no. 4 among baccalaureate institutions for student participation in short-term study abroad in 2013-14.

In The Princeton Review's 2016 rankings, Carthage was among 159 schools listed as a Best Midwestern College.

From 2008 through 2016, 17 students from the college won Fulbright fellowships. In 2016, the college was named a top Fulbright producer.

이런 Cthage College에는 여러전공이 있는데 유명한 Education 전공을 가지고 있는 Division of Professional Studies, Arts와 Digital Madia등의 전공을 보유하고 있는 Division of Arts and Humanities, 그리고 Cathage College에서 가장 유명한 전공인 Biology, Chemistry 등을 가지고 있는 Division of Natural and Social Science  등 40여개의 전공들이 제공되고 있습니다.

그럼 다양한 전공들을 지원하기 위해서 국제학생들은 어떻게 해야 할까요? 반달곰원장이 방문했을때도 중국과 콜롬비아, 베트남등 국제학생들이 많았는데 국제학생으로서 지원할려면 아래와 같은 입학절차들이 필요합니다.

Application Steps

• Submit the Carthage application for admission. Apply for admission online at www.carthage.edu/apply.
• Submit the non-refundable application fee of U.S. $40 with your application for admission to Carthage. The preferred method of payment is by credit card.
• Submit all official transcripts, certificates, and diplomas from your secondary school program and any previous university that you have attended. Transcripts must be in English and forwarded directly to Carthage from the institution.
• Submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores. For TOEFL, a minimum score of 78 is required for the iBT, and 213 on the computer version. The minimum score for IELTS is 6.0. Scores must be sent directly to Carthage from the testing agency. (Carthage offers Conditional Acceptance for students who meet our admission requirements but require additional English preparation prior to enrolling. The College has a formal agreement with ELS Language Center in Milwaukee and will work with other language providers as necessary.)
• SAT-I scores are optional, but encouraged, for international students. International students who submit SAT-I scores receive additional scholarship consideration. A list of SAT-I testing sites and dates can be found on the College Board website.
• Submit the certification of finances form. All monetary amounts listed on the certification of finances form must be certified by bank officials. If you have a financial sponsor, that person must submit the sponsor statement.
• Perform an audition if you are applying for music or music theatre.

웨에서 보듯이 어려운 부분은 없는데 영어조건 IBT 78, CBT 213 IELTS 6.0을 맞추면 됩니다. 그리고 위에서도 설명하고 있지만 조건부입학 프로그램을 제공하고 있어서 ELS나 다른 어학원에서 영어공부를 하고 입학할 수가 있습니다. 국제학생의 경우 SAT를 볼 필요는 없지만 장학금을 생각한다면 SAT점수를 받고 입학하는 것이 좋습니다. 

반달곰원장이 Cathage College를 본 순간 환경도 좋고 학생들도 매우 친절하고 좋아서 반달곰원장은 Cathage College로 한국 학생들을 많이 많이 소개하기로 결심하고 돌아왔습니다. 그 정도로 이 학교는 매우 퀄리티있는 대학교입니다. 서부의 CC들을 많이 가는데 Cathage College는 대학교이며 CC하고는 차원이 다릅니다. 4년제 대학교이지만 반달곰원장이 도와드리면 많은 장학금을 받을 수가 있습니다. 이런 Cathage College에서 열심히 공부하고 현지에서 취업하던가, 아니면 더 좋은 대학교로 트랜스퍼하던가 하는 방법들이 있습니다. 반달곰원장이 이런 전반적인 과정을 도와드릴 것입니다.
