우리나라 뿐만 아니라 전세계적으로 많은 직장인들이 MBA를 꿈꾸고 MBA를 준비하고 있습니다. 현재의 경력을 더 강화시키고 싶어서 하기도 하고 아니면 현재의 경력에서 벗어나 새로운 경력으로 이동하고 싶어서 MBA를 하는 분들도 많습니다. 또한 회사에서 선발되어 해외연수대상자가 되어서 MBA를 가는 경우도 있고 열심히 일해서 모은 자비로 가는 분들도 있습니다.
어느 분이 되었던 MBA를 선택할 때 고민하게 됩니다. 과연 내가 추구하는 것이 무엇인가에서부터 어디로 가야할지, 어느 나라의 MBA로 가야할지, 어느 정도 랭킹의 MBA를 선택해야할지, 그를 위해 내가 어느 정도의 IBT점수와 GMAT점수를 만들어야 할지, 학비는 어느 수준의 MBA로 가야할지, 1년 MBA를 할지 2년MBA를 할지 등등 너무나 선택할 사항들이 많습니다.
오늘 반달곰원장이 얘기하고자 하는 바를 프랑스의 유명한 10개월 집중 MBA인 EDHEC Global MBA의 뉴스레터에 실린 THE DO'S AND DON'TS를 바탕으로 설명드리도록 하겠습니다.
참고로 EDHEC MBA는 프랑스를 비롯해 5개의 캠퍼스를 두고 있는 실력있는 비즈니스 스쿨입니다. 2013년도 이코노미스트지 선정 세계 MBA순위에서 유럽전체에서 20위, 그리고 Finance분야에서는 3위를 차지한 MBA입니다.

• 1/ DO CONSIDER THE WHOLE PACKAGE
DO consider the whole package when you choose your MBA. Your MBA is not just a series of back to back classes so DO look at the big picture. Remember that an MBA is usually one programme among many within a school so DO check if the foundation of the school is solid. If the school is well established and has a long history of producing quality graduates, the chances are that it will have a strong reputation among employers and solid corporate relations. DO check the quality and the dynamism of the alumni network.

• 2/ DO CHECK ACCREDITATIONS & RANKINGS
DO use the schools accreditations and rankings to provide an indication of quality. The AMBA accreditation will guarantee that the quality of the MBA programme meets international standards while AACSB and Equis will prove the same for the business school itself. only 59 schools in the world have this coveted triple crown of excellence so DO consider the added value of a triple accredited MBA in the eyes of a recruiter. DO remember that rankings are just a snapshot of the state of a school at one given time so DON’T use rankings as the sole choice of MBA. Remember it’s not because a school boasts a certain post MBA average salary that you will necessarily get the same. DO use the rankings to check the criteria you feel are important to you and DO check the school’s general evolution over a period of time.
교육수준의 지표를 제공해주는 학교 인증과 랭킹을 이용해라. AMBA인증은 MBA프로그램의 수준이 국제기준을 만족시킨다는 것을 보장해준다. • 3/ DON’T UNDERESTIMATE RESEARCH
DON’T underestimate the importance of research produced by the business school. Research contributes to a school’s international visibility and keeps professors at the leading edge of knowledge in their field.
비즈니스스쿨에 의해 생산된 리서치의 중요성을 과소평가하지마라. 리서치는 학교의 국제적인 시정에 기여한다. 그리고 교수들을 그들의 분야에서 최고의 지식수준에 있는 지켜준다.
• 4/ DO MAKE SURE THE CURRICULUM FITS YOUR NEEDS
DO ensure that the core curriculum covers your needs once you have established the strength of the school’s foundations. If the school has the AMBA accreditation, you know that the curriculum has been thoroughly audited, together with the quality of faculty to offer high standards. MBA programmes should all offer a blend of business courses such as Strategy, Finance and Marketing etc but DO remember that soft skills such as leadership and managerial competencies are an important part of any MBA curriculum and are dealt with in different ways. DO also check that the specialisations offered match your career goals.
여러분이 학교토대의 강함을 확신했다면 핵심 커리큘럼이 여러분의 니즈를 커버하는지 확신해라. 그 학교가 AMBA 인증을 가지고 있다면, 여러분은 높은 수준의 교육을 제공하는 교수의 수준과 함께, 커리큘럼이 철저히 검증되었다는 것을 알게된다. MBA프로그램은 strategy, finance 그리고 marketing 같은 혼합된 비즈니스 코스들을 제공해야 하지만 리더십과 경영능력 같은 소프트 스킬이 어느 MBA커리큘럼에서든 중요한 부분이고 다른 방식으로 다루어진다는 것을 기억해라. 또한 제공되는 전문과목들도 여러분의 커리어 목표와 맞는지 체크해보라.
• 5/ DO CHECK THE LEARNING ENVIROMNENT
While the core curriculum may show similarities in different schools DO check that there is a variety of learning methods. An MBA should not be a sit-back-and-take-notes course but a hands-on, discussion-based learning environment. DO ensure you change work group often and are not stuck in the same small team for the full year. Ensure that you have the opportunity to do group work a variety of fellow participants so DO choose an MBA with an experienced class profile so that you can learn from peers in group work. These same mature classmates will not only enrich your learning environment but provide better networking potential and form a stronger alumni network. In order to check that an MBA will expose you to the learning experience that you aspire to, DO talk to alumni and, if possible, DO visit the school and sit in the class for a couple of hours.
핵심 커리큘럼이 다른 학교들에서 유사성을 보일지 모르지만, 다양한 학습방법이 있는지 체크하라. • 6/ DO CHECK OUT THE FACULTY
DO prefer an MBA whose faculty are not pure academics but ones who also give executive training courses in companies or who come from industry. This ensures a true understanding of what companies are seeking today.
MBA교수가 순수한 학자가 아니라 기업에서나 출신 산업에서 최고의 교육코스를 제공하는 사람을 선호해라. 이것은 오늘날 기업들이 무엇을 추구하는지에 대해 진정으로 이해하게 확신케 해준다.
• 7/ DO ENSURE THERE IS A PERSONALISED, MBA CAREERS SERVICE
DO make sure the careers service is specialised in MBA careers and that it does not just concentrate on first-time jobs for young candidates. A service offering specialised career coaching will of course provide an advantage.
커리어서비스가 MBA 커리어에 전문적으로 잘 되어있는지 그리고 어린 후보자들을 위한 첫번째 직업에만 집중된 것이 아니라는 것을 확인해보라. 전문적인 경력코칭을 제공하는 서비스는 물론 이익을 제공해줄 것이다.
• 8/ DO CONSIDER LIFESTYLE
As you will be in class most days, DO consider the quality of the campus, both in terms of location (is it really in that city or will it require a long trip on public transport?) and in terms of facilities (is it really a campus or just one classroom in an office block? ). DO make sure there are nearby amenities for the whole family at a price you can afford. If you have to spend a year far from home, the experience has to be as enjoyable as possible for everyone involved.

• 9/ DO SEEK TRANSPARENCY on SCHOLARSHIPS
DO ask for clarity on scholarships. If you are told you can get a scholarship, pay particular attention to the word can. 9 times out of 10 it will just mean that you are eligible for a scholarship but without any promise that you will actually get one. DON’T pay any fees until you know for sure what scholarship you will get.
장학금에 대한 명료성을 요청하라. 여러분이 장학금을 받을 수 있고 특별한 관심을 세상에 보일 수 있다고 들었다면, 십중팔구 여러분이 실제로 하나를 받을 것이라는 어떤 약속도 없이 장학금을 받을 수 있는 가능성이 있슴을 의미하기만 한다. 여러분이 확실히 장학금을 받을 것이라는 것을 알기까지는 학비를 내지 마라.
• 10/ DON’T BE FORCED INTO MAKING A QUICK DECISION
Once you have chosen your MBA and are lucky enough to be accepted, DON’T be forced into making a hasty decision. An MBA is a big investment and so warning bells should ring if you are offered a seat then told that if you don’t accept within few days you will lose your place or scholarship. DO make sure you get all the information before you make your final decision.
여러분이 MBA를 선택했다면 그리고 합격될 정도로 충분히 행운이 있다면, 성급한 결정을 내리도록 강요하지마라. MBA는 큰 투자이다 그래서 여러분이 합격을 제안받고 며칠안에 바아들이지 않으면 그 자리나 장학금을 놓칠 것이다라고 듣는 다면 경고벨이 울려야만 한다. 여러분이 최종 결정을 내리기 전에 모든 정보를 가지고 있는 확신해라.
