오늘은 반달곰원장이 UCLA 교육 정보대학원의 방문학자 프로그램에 대해서 소개를 드렸었는데 바로 이어서 시애틀의 명문주립대학교 University of Washington의 Evans공공정책대학원에서 제공하는 방문학자 프로그램에 대해서 안내를 해드리겠습니다.
UW에는 반달곰원장이 School of Law 즉 로스쿨에 변호사, 판사, 법원공무원, 헌번재판소, 검사분등의 방문학자를 도와드렸었는데 안타깝게도 UW로스쿨에서 정책이 바뀌어서 법학과 교수님외에는 방문학자를 받지 않기로 하는 바람에 법조관련 한 분들이 선택할 수 있는 좋은 대학교가 하나 사라져 버렸습니다.
그리고 UW에는 Center for Korean Studies즉, 한국학센터에서 방문학자를 초청하고 있기에 우리나라의 공무원분들은 바로 UW 한국학센터로 방문학자를 도전하시길 바랍니다. 오늘은 공공정책대학원에서 제공하는 방문학자 프로그램에 대해서 말씀드릴 것인데 이 프로그램도 잘 살펴보시길 바라겠습니다. 먼저 이 프로그램의 취지와 개요에 대해서 알아보도록 하겠습니다.
Evans School Visiting Scholars
Visiting Scholars at the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance can pursue academic research and enjoy the benefits of the Evans School and University of Washington (UW) resources. The goals of this program are to:
Support rigorous and innovative research in public policy, governance, management, and leadership by prominent and emerging scholars across the United States and around the world.
Strengthen collaborative research between our renowned Evans School faculty and our partners.
Contribute to the vibrancy and productivity of the research culture at the Evans School.
Fundraise for collaborative research projects between Evans School faculty and their partner scholars.
이런 Evans School에 방문학자에 지원하기 위한 기본 자격조건등을 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
Hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and a professorial title at another institution.
Have an existing connection with a faculty member who is willing to sponsor your time at the Evans School. If there is no pre-existing relationship with an Evans School faculty member, please include potential names in your application after reviewing the research interests of our faculty (see faculty directory).
즉 박사학위 또는 동등한 자격이 있어야 하고 교수나 다른 기관의 연구원 자격이 있어야 합니다. 그리고 역시나 Evans School에서 본인을 초청해줄 교수님이 계셔야 합니다. 그런데 여기서 좋은 점은 혹시라도 초청해줄 교수님이 안계시더라도 지원서에 관심연구 분야가 유사한 교수님을 포함하여 제출하면 됩니다. 그러나, 항상 말씀드리는 것이지만 교수님의 초청을 받아서 지원할 때 방문학자로 초청받을 확율이 높습니다.
방문학자는 1년까지 초청 받을 수 있는데 상황에 따라서 연장이 가능할 수가 있습니다. 당연히 방문학자가 초청받으면 부인과 남편, 그리고 자녀를 동반하여 갈 수가 있습니다. 그럼 방문학자로 초청받을 시에 어떤 혜택을 받을 수 있는지 알아보도록 하겠습니다.
Visiting Scholar Benefits
Faculty: Discuss research and common interests with faculty who have agreed to work with the Visiting Scholar. Access to faculty members is at faculty discretion.
University Library: Library privileges according to library regulations and eligibility requirements. A UW NetID will be provided to Visiting Scholars. Some fees for services will be the responsibility of the Scholar and will be invoiced by the Evans School.
Research Space: Shared research space will be assigned as space permits.
Computer Access: The Evans School is unable to provide computers for Visiting Scholars.
Special Activities: Participate in special activities connected with Evans School programs.
UW Facilities: Access to UW facilities according to eligibility requirements.
Transportation: Possible services include access to parking and/or a bus pass.
방문학자로 얻을 수 있는 혜택은 대학교 도서관 이용, 연구 공간의 제공, 컴퓨터이용, 그리고 대학교 시설과 주차장과 버스등을 이용할 수 있는 것입니다. 솔직히 요근래 방문학자에게 연구공간을 제공하는 경우가 없는데 UW Evans School의 경우 공용으로 사용할 수 있는 연구공간을 제공하고 있습니다. 그럼 이런 방문학자 프로그램에 지원하기 위해서 필요한 기본 지원서류에 대해서 말씀드리겠습니다.
Curriculum Vitae (CV): CV should be current and include all training, publications, and experiences that might be relevant to a Visiting Scholar appointment at the UW.
Statement of Purpose: A detailed description of your proposed research topic; this paper should be between three to five pages in length. In addition to describing the work you wish to undertake at the UW Evans School, please include an indication of how your research fits into your long-term professional plans and goals. Your research proposal should include a description of the methodologies and objectives of your project.
Letter of Recommendation: A minimum of one letter of recommendation from someone familiar with your work and could discuss it with the Evans School.
Proof of Highest Academic Degree: This is required to process visa requests for international Visiting Scholars. Documents should be in English or translated into English. (Photocopies accepted.)
Letter of Financial Support from Sponsoring Institution: Proof of salary and other sources of funding should be sufficient to cover expenses.
제일 중요한 것은 역시 영문이력서입니다. 그리고 SOP,즉 연구계획서가 중요합니다. 3페이지에서 5페이지 용량으로 본인이 UW Evans School에서 연구하고자 하는 연구계획에 대해서 작성해서 같이 제출해야 합니다. 그리고 영문 대학교/대학원 성적증명서/졸업증명서를 제출해야 하고 스폰서 기관의 영문재정증명서를 제출해야 합니다.
