안녕하세요, 반달곰원장입니다.
어제는 반달곰원장이 엘에이 첫일정으로 UCLA를 방문하였습니다. UCLA에 도착하여 인앤아웃버거를 들려서 맛있는 더블더블버거를 먹은 후에 Medical Plaza에서 부터 천천히 캠퍼스를 걸어 올라갔습니다. 그렇게 올라가다보면 UCLA 의 상징인 베어동상을 볼 수가 있는데 2017년 졸업생들이 졸업가운은 아니고 졸업을 의미하는 스카프라고 할까, 그것을 목에 두르고 기념사진을 찍는데 여념이 없더군요. 그런 모습들을 즐기면서 걸어가다보니 UCLA Anderson School of Management에 도착하더군요.
그리고 Fowler Museum at UCLA에서 열리는 African-Print Fashion Now등을 감상한 후에 우리나라 법원공무원, 변호사 등에게 인기가 많은 UCLA Law School 방문학자 프로그램을 제공하는 로스쿨을 들린 후에 최종적으로 방문한 곳은 바로 Center for Korean Studies 한국학센터였습니다. 우리나라 공무원분들이 어렵게 선발과정을 거쳐서 선발이 되면 어디로 가야하나 하고 정말 고민하게 됩니다. 가고 싶은곳들은 아마도 아래와 같을 것입니다.

이런 명문대학교 한국학센터로 가고자 하는데 문제는 영어능력과 한국학센터의 초청의사입니다. 이렇게 공무원 해외연수의 핵심이라고 할 수 있는 UCLA Center for Korean Studies를 방문하여 얼마나 많은 분들이 방문학자로 있는지, 그리고 어던 형태의 모습인가를 살펴보고 싶었기에 방문을 하였습니다. UCLA Center for Korean Studies 는 캠퍼스의 거의 끝쪽인 Bunche Hall 11층에 위치해 있습니다. UCLA International Institute가 여기에 있는 Center for Japanese Studies, Center for Chinese Studies, Center for European Studies등 많은 센터들이 같이 모여 있습니다.
UCLA 한국학센터옆에는 방문학자로 오신 분들이 연구할 수 있는 연구공간이 제공되고 있었습니다. 요즘 다른 대학교들이 방문학자를 위한 오피스공간 제공을 안하고 있는데 UCLA 에서 여전히 제공하고 있어서 보기 좋더군요. 물론 방문학자들이 대학교에 자주 나오지는 않습니다. 그럴 필요도 별로 없구요. 그래도 공간을 제공한다는 것은 방문학자에게 매우 좋은 이점입니다.
반달곰원장이 UCLA 인근을 다녀보니 환경이 쾌적하고 날씨가 매우 좋아서 방문학자분들이 가족들하고 같이 보내기에는 정말 좋더군요. 그래서 해외연수자로 선발되신 공무원분들은 정말 영어점수, 토플점수만 잘 만들어서 지원을 하면 좋은 결과가 있을 수 있습니다. UCLA Center for Korean Studies 한국학센터에서는 토익을 받지 않기에 반드시 토플점수나 IELTS점수를 만들 수 있으면 초청딜 가능성이 매우 높습니다. 많은 공무원들이 토플 점수가 없기에 상대벅으로 토플점수를 가지고 있는 분들은 그만큼 가능성이 있습니다. 그리고 한국에서 온 방문학자의 숫자가 현재로는 많아 보이지 않기에 더욱 가능성이 있기에 영어점수만 잘 만드시고 도전하시길 바랍니다. 그럼 UCLA 한국학센터 방문학자를 위한 qualification을 알라보도록 하겠습니다.
Qualifications
1. Ph.D., or equivalent evidence of professional achievement, by the time the appointment would begin.
2. Preference is given to scholars from institutions with which UCLA has signed academic-exchange agreements and to scholars who are personally recommended by UCLA faculty in Korean Studies.
3. All applicants must be affiliated with an established institution (i.e. Academic Institution, Government, Media Institutions and Companies)
4. All applicants must provide documentation certifying sufficient proficiency in the English Language with one of the following:
• A recognized English language test - TOEFL or IELTS only. The exams must have been taken within the past 2 years. The IELTS overall band score must be 7 or higher and the TOEFL test score must be 560 (paper based) or 87 (internet based iBT).
• Certification document from an academic institution or English language school the visiting scholar is affiliated with or has once attended. Certification must be provided on letterhead and signed by school official within the past 6 months.
5. A UCLA faculty member's consent to serve as the university sponsor for the applicant during his or her stay at UCLA.
6. Due to space and administrative limitations, there is an annual quota on the number of visiting scholars who may be invited by the Center. The Center may not be able to accommodate all qualified candidates who apply in any one year.
위에서 볼 수 있듯이 토플이나 IELTS를 만들어야 합니다. 조금 아쉬운 것은 IBT 87점이나, IELTS 7.0이상이어야 한다는 것입니다. 솔직히 공무원분들이 만들어 내기에는 쉽지 않은 점수입니다. 그러므로 말씀드린대로 영어점수만 만들 수 있으면 환경 좋은 UCLA에서 가족들과 살면서 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수가 있습니다. 그럼 UCLA Center for Korean Studies 에 관심있는 분들은 반달곰원장에게 문의하시길 바랍니다. 친절하게 컨설팅 해드리겠습니다.
