UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies Visiting Scholar Programs

오늘은 반달곰원장이 미국 캘리포니아 엘에이의 명문주립대학교 UCLA의 방문학자 프로그램을 안내해드리겠습니다. UCLA의 Graduate School of Education and Information Stusies GSEIS에서 제공하는 방문학자 프로그램에 대해서 말씀드리는데 제일 중요한 이프로그램에 지원할 수 있는 후보자의 자격부터 살펴보는 것이 좋겠습니다. UCLA GSEIS에서 원하는 지원자의 자격은 아래와 같습니다.
Visiting scholars are established scholars who (1) hold a doctoral degree or the foreign equivalent and (2) an appointment comparable to that of a UCLA faculty member, and (3) are in most cases on temporary leave from their universities or research centers.
즉, 박사학위 소지자나 그 동등한 학위 소지자, UCLA의 교수님과 동등한 지위이고 대학교나 연구소 출신을 선호하고 있습니다. 이것이 일반적인 방문학자 초청 조건이지요. 그래서 일반 공무원분이나 법원공무원분들등은 어려울 것 같고 박사학위를 가지신 교수님이나 강사님 연구원님 등이 도전할 수 있겠습니다.
방문학자분들은 보통 1년정도 체류할 수 있고 체류하는 동안 기대되는 활동은 아래와 같은 것들입니다.
Visiting scholars are in residence for relatively short periods of time, usually no longer than one year. Visiting scholars usually conduct research conceived and funded prior to coming to UCLA. While in some cases they collaborate on research projects and publications with UCLA faculty members, these collaborations are in all cases established prior to their arrival at UCLA. Ordinarily, visiting scholars are self-supported; that is they have funding from their home universities or from outside grant or funding agencies.
보통 UCLA에 오기전에 이야기한 연구활동을 하기를 기대되는데 UCLA교수님과 협력하고 논문이나 책같은 것을 펴낼 수 있습니다. 아시다시피 방문학자는 초청해준 UCLA등의 대학교에서 재정적으로 지원받는 것은 아무것도 없습니다. 본인 스스로 펀딩을 만들어서 UCLA에 와야 하는 것이지요.
UCLA GSEIS의 방문학자들은 학교에 administration를 지불해야 하는데 그 비용은 프로그램에 따라서 다른데 첫 쿼에만 지원서비 처럼 300달러를 추가로 지불해야 합니다. 보통 UCLA의 경우 1년에 1만불 수준의 비용을 학교에 내야 합니다. 물론 보험이나 비자관련 비용등은 별도 입니다.
그럼 마지막으로 UCLA GSEIS방문학자에 지원하는 방법에 대해서 안내해드리겠습니다.
How to Apply
1. A Visiting Scholar must also be sponsored by a faculty member within the Graduate School of Educational and Information Studies.
2. After a faculty member has agreed to sponsor you, contact Anna Avila at aavila@gseis.ucla.edu who will supply you with all the necessary information to begin the application process.
가장 중요한 것은 GSEIS의 교수님으로부터 초청을 받는 것입니다. 반달곰원장이 그 부분을 도와드리지만 매우 힘든 일이라서 비용이 많이 발생합니다. 그리고 초청여부를 보장할 수는 없는 일이라서 잘 생각하고 지원해야 합니다. 초청을 하겠다는 교수님이 생기면 입학지원수속 하는 것은 그렇게 어렵지 않습니다. 방문학자 J비자 수속도 어렵지 않습니다.
