학계에서 Visiting Scholar와 더불어 Visiting Researcher, Visiting Fellow, Visiting Lecture 혹은 Visiting Professor는 위키피디아의 정의에 따르면, 방문자가 중시하는 주제에 대한 강의나 연구를 수행하기 위해 호스트 대학을 방문하는 기관 소속의 학자를 의미합니다. 자신의 고국의 기관으로부터 급여를 받기 때문에 많은 경우, 혹은 미국대학으로부터 안식휴가 기간과 같은 경우로 부분적으로 급여를 받거나 아예 급여가 없습니다.
오히려 외국인 입장에서는 미국 입국을 합법적으로 도와 연구를 수행할 수 있는 기회를 주고 동반하는 자녀의 경우 미국의 국립 교육을 무상으로 받을 수 있는 기회를 주기 때문에 프로그램 참가 비용을 납부하는 것을 당연하게 여깁니다.
오늘은 UC Berkeley에도 존재하는 한국학연구소인 Center for Korean Studies에서 제공하는 Visiting Scholar 프로그램에 대해서 알아보겠습니다.
CKS는 UC 버클리의 Institute of East Asian Studies의 한 부서로 한국의 인문학 및 사회 과학 연구를 위해서는 미국 내에서 가장 활발한 한문 센터 중 하나로 알려져 있습니다.
이 센터의 목표는 한국의 폭넓은 이해를 촉진하기 위해 UC 대학의 학문적인 자원을 사용하는 것입니다. 본래는 일본학과 한국학의 결합된 센터였으나 한국학 연구소로 1979년에 국제업무에서 한국의 중요성이 커지고 있음을 인식하면서 독립하여 설립되었습니다.
오늘날 연구소는 한국과 미국의 고등교육기관, 연구기관, 정부 및 기업 단체 간의 유대 관계를 구축하면서 학술적인 학회, 컨퍼런스, 세미나 및 기타 행사를 후원하고 있습니다.
이 연구소는 방문학자 프로그램을 통해 한국에 관한 연구를 수행할 학자들을 지원하는데요.
대학 교수진 이외에도 공공 서비스와 비영리 기관 출신의 개인을 포함해서 저명한 학자 및 지식인들이 버클리대학을 방문해 연구소 및 센터의 지적 생활에 큰 기여를 하고 있습니다.
CKS는 센터 관련 교수진과 관련된 연구를 수행하고자 하는 학자들의 신청을 받아 UC 버클리 소재 더 넓은 한국학계에 참여하고 기여할 수 있는 지원자를 모집합니다. 이 학자들은 일반적으로 6개월에서 1년 정도 연구소에 머무르는데 경우에 따라서는 연장도 가능합니다. 학자들은 소속기간 내내 거주하며 당초 제안했던 연구 과제 외에 CKS 학회, 컨퍼런스 등 행사에도 정기적으로 참여합니다.
F비자의 유학생보다 J비자 신분의 방문학자들이 좀더 편안하게 캠퍼스에서 생활을 할 수 있다지만, 기본적으로 방문학자들의 책무가 있는데, 한국학연구소의 제휴에 초청된 각 학자는 이 센터의 프로그램에 적극적으로 참여해야 합니다. 학자들은 버클리에 머무는 동안 적어도 한번은 연구 결과를 토대로 대화를 해야 하며, CKS가 후원하는 회담과 세미나에 정기적으로 참석해ㅑ 합니다. 모든 학자들은 연구 진행 상황에 대한 최종 보고서를 제출해야 하며, 여기에는 체류 기간 동안 완성된 출판물 사본이나 논문 초안 등이 포함되어 있습니다.

- Access to UC Berkeley’s libraries (including the East Asian Library)
- Access to electronic resources and campus Wi-Fi internet (via a CalNet account)
- Issuance of a Berkeley e-mail account
- Issuance of a Cal ID card
- Access to shared work space exclusively for Visiting Scholars (due to space constraints, we are unable to provide private offices)
- Access to occaisional meeting spaces (by request only)
- Access to photocopying and printing
- The ability to audit (for no credit) courses with the instructor’s approval
- Occaisional access to invite-only dinners or events with visiting speakers (varies by semester)
- Access to events exclusively for Visiting Scholars

CKS에서는 Visiting Research Scholar와 Visiting Student Scholar 두 가지 카테고리로 소속을 받고 있는데요. 방문연구학자 카테고리는 Academic과 Non-academic으로 다시 구분합니다.

참가 비용은 CKS 입학신청비와 DS-2019 프로세싱 비용을 포함해서 참가자별 소속(Affiliation) 비용입니다.

This fee is for the Berkeley International Office (BIO), which produces your DS-2019 form. This form is required when you go to the U.S. Embassy to get your J-1 visa. This fee should only be paid AFTER a scholar is notified of their acceptance by CKS. |
| VSPA Fee (Visiting Research Scholars) | $750 | This fee is for the Visiting Scholar and Postdoc Affairs Office (VSPA) to secure access to campus resources. It should only be paid AFTER a scholar is notified of their acceptance by CKS. It is payable online by credit card. Scholars cannot receive their university ID card and library access until after this fee has been paid. |

방문학자 프로그램에 지원하려면 다음과 같이 봄과 가을학기 시작으로 신청할 수 있고, 각각의 마감일 전에 신청을 마쳐야 합니다.
