안녕하세요, 반달곰원장입니다.
오늘은 반달곰원장이 미국 시애틀의 명문주립대학교 University of Washington UW으로 갑니다. 바로 UW의 유명한 로스쿨의 방문학자프로그램에 대해서 이야기를 드릴 것인데 작년에 반달곰원장이 직접 방문하고 담당자와 미팅을 하였기에 그 때 찍은 사진을 같이 보면서 말씀을 드리겠습니다.

Law School 방문학자로 가는 분들은 법원의 판사들, 검찰청의 검사들, 법원의 법원공무원들, 그리고 대형로펌의 스폰서쉽 변호사들입니다. 이 분들은 UW 로스쿨 방문학자 프로그램을 선호하는데 그것은 일정한 영어점수가 있고 스폰서쉽이 있으면 초청받을 가능성이 높기 때문입니다. 그래서 인기가 많은데 역설적으로 그래서 UW 로스쿨 방문학자로 가기가 힘듭니다.
UW Law School건물의 이름은 William F. Gates Hall입니다. 바로 빌게이츠의 이름을 따서 만든 건물입니다.
법원이나 검찰청들은 선발된 직원들이 미국의 로스쿨들로 골고루 가기를 원합니다. 그래서 UW로 모든 분들이 가는 것을 회사에서 정부에서 막고 있습니다. 그러나 우선적으로 생각하는 곳이 UW이므로 UW 로스쿨 방문학자로 서둘러서 지원하는 것이 좋습니다. 많은 분들이 선호하는 곳이 캘리포니아지역의 로스쿨이어서 처음에는 UC Berkeley Law School, UCLA Law School, USC Law School, UC Davis Law School, UC Irvine Law School, Golden Gate Law School등을 지원하고자 합니다. 그런데 많은 학교들이 영어 토플점수를 요구하고 있어서 초기 지원단계에서 초기하는 경우가 많습니다.

그래서 지원의 어려움을 느끼는 분들이 반달곰원장에게 도움을 요청할 때 추천하는 학교들이 엘에이인근의 Pepperdine University와 Mount St. Mary's University등을 추천하기도 합니다. 페퍼다인대학교의 로스쿨과 MSU의 Pre Law로 보내드릴 수가 있어서 다양성을 추구해드릴 수가 있습니다. 그럼 UW Law School 방문학자를 지원을 위한 방법을 안내해드리겠습니다.

Application Requirements
Admission to the Visiting Scholars Program is highly competitive. An appointment as a Visiting Scholar requires a formal director approval and is not automatic.
1. Fill out an online application and pay a non-refundable application fee ($200).
Please note that we will not be able to process your application without this payment.
2. Send the following documents
o Curriculum Vitae (CV)
o Research Proposal
The research proposal should be between 3-5 pages long and outline the area on which you intend to focus your research during the Program. The proposal should include the following sections – Working Title, Background, Project Statement and Plan, and Bibliography.
o Two Letters of Recommendation
Two (2) letters of recommendation are required. They should come from law faculty or other professionals in law who can best evaluate your capacity for research in the United States. You may have the letters mailed/e-mailed directly by the referee or send them with your supporting documents.
o Visiting Scholars Program Intake Form
o Letter of Financial Support From Your Sponsor
Required for all non-U.S. applicants to process visa requests. Funding sources could include a U.S. government agency, an international organization, the Visitor’s government, the Visitor’s employer or other organization, or any combination of these. Personal funds may supplement but not substitute for institutional, governmental or employer funding. UW does not provide visa sponsorship to Visitors funded solely by personal or family funds. Combined sources of funding should be sufficient to cover expenses. The letter of financial support should guarantee at least $2100 per month for one person or $3000-$3600 with dependents (for the visa processing). Also, the letter of financial support should state the proposed dates of the research period (we cannot extend your stay beyond what your sponsor supports).
o Photocopy of Highest Academic Degree
A proof of highest degree is required to process visa requests.
o Photocopy of Passport Page For You And Any Accompanying Family Members
o Proof of English Language Proficiency
Effective Jan. 5, 2015, visa regulations require that J-1 exchange scholars provide one of the following measurements of English language proficiency: (1) A recognized English language test; (2) Signed documentation from an academic institution or English language school
UW Law School건물의 바깥 모습입니다.
UW Law School방문학자 프로그램의 가장 큰 장점중의 하나가 바로 토익점수를 받아준다는 것이지요. 토플만을 요구하면 지원할 수가 없지만 UW Law School은 토익성적표 또는 영어학원에서 공부하고 영어의사소통에 문제없다는 확인서를 제출하면 영어 조건을 만족시킬 수 있습니다. 영어점수 만드는데 자신이 없는 분들은 서둘러서 영어학원을 등록하시고 열심히 다니신 후에 학원에 확인서를 발급해달라고 해서 제출하면 됩니다.

UW Law School에 지원하기 위해서는 처음에 application fee 200달러를 내야 합니다. 그런데 가끔은 내부사정에 따라서 초청을 못받는 경우가 있습니다. 지원서비는 지원하는 비용이지만 초청이 확정된 것이 아니라서 학교에서 초청이 어렵다고 이야기하면 할 수가 없습니다. 그래서 반달곰원장같이 UW Law School방문학자 프로그램과 밀접하게 일하는 전문가에게 도움을 요청해야 하는 이유입니다. 올해도 미국으로 가족을 동반하여 방문학자를 가기 위해서 노력중에 있습니다. 너무 고민마시고 전문가에게 일임하시고 업무에 집중하시는 것이 좋겠습니다.
소탐대실. 조그만한 비용절감을 위해서 혼자 애쓰다가 시간은 다 보내고 긴급으로 도움을 요청하지 마시길 바랍니다. 비용도 더 비싸고 물리적으로 시간이 부족하면 반달곰원장도 손을 못슬 수 있습니다. 그러니 미리미리 반달곰원장에게 도움을 받으시길 바랍니다.
