오늘은 미국 시애틀의 명문대학교인 워싱턴대학교 University of Washington 의 Graduate Program 중에서 법학석사프로그램인 LLM에 대해서 말씀드리겠습니다. 우리나라 법원공무원들중에 스폰을 받는 분이나 개인적으로 미국법학석사를 공부한 후에 미국 Bar Examination을 통과하여 미국 변호사가 되고자 하는 분들에게 UW LLM은 매우 좋은 선택이 될 것입니다. 그런데 UW LLM 프로그램은 아주 다양한 LLM프로그램을 제공하고 있습니다. 그 내용을 살펴보면 아래와 같습니다.
Graduate Programs
· Intellectual Property Law and Policy LL.M.
· Sustainable International Development Law LL.M.
LLM프로그램의 Specialization 분야로 Asian Law, General Law, Global Business Law, Health Law, Intellectual Property Law
Taxation, Sustainable International Development Law등이 있습니다. 이 중에서 가장 보편적인 법학석사라고 할 수 있는 General Law LLM을 중심으로 입학지원 조건 및 세부전공을 살펴보겠습니다.
General Law LLM은 어떤 특정분야를 중심으로 공부하는것 아니라 일반적으로 두루 공부할 수 있게 기회를 주고, 후보자들이 원하면 워싱턴주나 뉴욕주에서 변호사시험을 볼 수 있게 해줍니다. 그럼 General Law LLM에 지원하기 위한 기본적인 자격적인 조건을 살펴보면 아래와 같습니다.
1. 최소한 관련 분야에서 2년이상의 직장경험이 있어야 합니다. 후보자에 따라서는 이런 특정한 조건을 면제받을 수가 있으므로 직장경력으로 고민하는 분들은 학교에 확인을 하고 진행하면 좋겠습니다.
2. 미국외 다른나라출신의 지원자는 LL.B 또는 B.Law 학위 또는 동둥한 학위가 반드시 있어야 자격이 주어집니다. 그리고 보통 변호사시험에 합격한 자나 변호사로서 활동을 하고 계신분들은 그 자격을 인정해주어 LLM에 지원할 수가 있습니다.
그럼 구체적으로 어떠한 서류가 필요한지 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
Application Instructions
1. Fill out an online application, upload the following documents (or mail directly to the program), designate recommenders and pay the application fee
· Résumé listing educational qualifications, work experience, date of admission to legal practice (if applicable) and any other professional affiliations relevant to the application.
· Statement of Purpose describing applicant's background, primary area of interest, practical or academic experience in the area, and how the LL.M. will be used after graduation.
· Official Transcripts and Degree Statement from all colleges and universities attended. Please also upload transcripts for in-progress degrees, and also for degrees that you did not complete.
· LSAC number, if sending transcripts and recommendation letters through the LSAC credential assembly service. Using LSAC is optional.
· Two (2) Letters of Recommendation are required. In the online application, designate two recommenders who can best evaluate the applicant's capacity for graduate study in the United States, preferably law faculty or other law professionals.
· IBT 92, IELTS 7.0
