여름이면 어학연수를 떠나는 학생들이 많이 있습니다. 과거처럼 그냥 순수하게 어학연수만을 위해서 떠나는 학생들은 별로 없고 어학연수+인턴쉽, 또는 어학연수+Certificate 과정을 이수하는 것이 일반적인 현상입니다. 그래서 과거에 어학연수만으로 돈을 잘 벌던 유학원들이 요즘은 아주 고생을 하지요. 순수하게 어학연수만 가는 학생들이 별로 없으니까요. 이미 우리나라 학생들이 영어를 잘 하나 봅니다.
그런데 어학연수를 가던, certificate 과정을 위해서 가던 3개월 이상 미국에서 full time 수업을 들을려면 필요 한것이 바로 학생비자입니다. 그런데 요즘 학생비자 받는 것이 쉽지 않습니다. 옛날에는 쉽게 받을 수 있는 학생비자를 미국대사관에서 상당히 심사를 깐깐하게 하면서 줍니다. 비자거절 한두번씩은 경험을 해봤을 수도 있습니다. 특히나 미혼 여성인 경우, 대학생들은 괜찮지만 퇴직을 해서 직업이 없거나 아예 취직한 적이 없는 친구들은 여간해서 비자를 잘 주지 않습니다. 미국대사관의 영사를 나쁘게 볼 수도 있지만 미국에 가서 학교가 아닌 술집으로 빠져버리는 사람들이 있기에 영사들이 그러는 것이고 선의의 피해자가 생기는 것이지요.
그리고 3개월이상 체류할 경우에는 학생비자 F비자를 받아서 나간다고 하지만, 여름방학이나 겨울 방학만을 이용해서 여행도 하고 영어공부도 하고 싶은 분들은 어떡하면 좋을까요! 여름방학에 친지방문도 하고 영어공부를 하고 싶은 분들은 무엇을 해야 할까요! 그런 경우에 가장 좋은 프로그램중의 하나가 바로 미국 시애틀에 있는 University of Washington 의 Short Term English Program (STEP) 입니다. UW STEP은 총 3주간 영어공부를 하는 과정이라서 학생비자없이도 공부할 수가 있습니다.
UW STEP과정이 좋은 이유는 학생들이 원하는 분야에 따라서 공부할 수가 있다는 것입니다. Language and Culture STEP, Orientation to Academic Skills STEP, 그리고 새로 생긴 Business STEP등 다양하게 구성되어 있습니다. 3개월 정도를 생각하고 나간다며, 이중에 2과정은 이수할 수가 있습니다. 일정이 겹치지 않는 것이 있으므로 Business STEP과정과 다른 과정을 하나하면 됩니다.

Language and Culture STEP
Interested in improving your English-language skills and experiencing American culture? Students in the Language and Culture STEP work on expanding their vocabulary, and improving their listening, speaking and presentations skills. The program includes visits to Seattle cultural landmarks, where you will have the chance to experience a world-class city while practicing your English.
Session dates: August 29 - September 16
Length: 3 weeks
Hours/Week: 15; afternoon field trips (2 days/week).
Tuition: $1,490
Not included: $45 Registration Fee, Room and Board, or local transportation. (Students can purchase a transportation pass (UPASS) during registration).
Orientation to Academic Skills STEP
Are you planning on attending university in the U.S? Orientation to Academic Skills is designed to introduce students to college-level study skills and practices, and to familiarize them with the American higher education system. In this program, you will work on improving your speaking, listening and reading skills, developing your vocabulary, and practicing your academic writing.
Session dates: August 29 - September 16
Length: 3 weeks
Hours/Week: 15
Tuition: 1,490
Not included: $45 Registration Fee, Room and Board, or local transportation. (Students can purchase a transportation pass (UPASS) during registration).
Please note: The program is intended for students with an above-intermediate English level; a Minimum TOEFL iBT score of 61 is required.
Business STEP
Come practice your English while learning about American business. Students in Business STEP are introduced to useful skills, and enjoy opportunities to interact with local companies and business professionals. Class are held in our downtown campus, which allows students to study English and learn about American business and urban life in the middle of one of the most exciting cities in the U.S.

Length: 3 weeks
