오늘은 반달곰원장이 미국의 새로운 방문학자 목적지를 소개하고자 합니다. 방문학자를 편하게 진행하는 것은 참으로 어렵습니다. 반달곰원장이 10년 넘게 방문학자 프로그램을 컨설팅 하고 있는데도 방문학자의 수요를 따라주기에는 턱없이 열악한 상태입니다.
작년에 듀크대학교 정치학과 PASS과정이 망가지면서 더욱 방문학자 가는 것은 어려워졌습니다. 그런 열악한 환경속에서도 동부의 University of North Carolina Wilmington과 서부의 Westcliff University로 숨통을 열어서 방문학자를 보내드리고 있는데 여전히 좋은 대학교로의 방문학자 진행은 쉽지가 않습니다.
그런데 이번에 네덜란드 암스테르담에서 열린 ICEF Higher Education Workshop에서 미국중부의 날씨 좋고 물가 저렴하고 좋은 공립학교를 가지고 있는 좋은 주립대학교를 만났습니다. 바로 Southeast Missouri State University SEMO 입니다. 이 대학교에서는 비즈니스에서 간호학, Applied Health, 엔지니어링까지 다양한 전공을 제공하고 있기에 선택의 폭이 넓습니다.
Holland College of Arts & Media
The Earl & Margie Holland College of Arts and Media prepares students for creative careers. The Department of Communications Studies and Modern Languages, the Department of Criminal Justice, Social Work, and Sociology, the Department of English, the Department of History and Anthropology, and the Department of Political Science, Philosophy and Religion, provide learning opportunities in 16 distinct areas.
College of STEM
The College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics finds creative solutions to problems. The Department of Agriculture, the Department of Biology, the Department of Chemistry and Physics, the Department of Engineering and Technology, and the Department of Mathematics graduate curious, analytical students, ready to use their knowledge to make things better.
위와 같이 다양한 전공을 제공하기에 선발되신 공무원, 변호사, 의사, 전문직, 공기업 간부 및 임원, 교사 등 자녀교육을 위해 동반유학을 생각하시는 분들에게는 아주 좋은 기회를 제공할 것입니다.
방문학자들이 고려하는 첫번째 조건은 살기가 좋은지 입니다. 살기가 좋다는 말에는 물가도 있고, 안전성도 있고 자녀의 공립학교의 우수성도 있습니다. 서부는 좋은데 물가가 너무 비싸서 망설여지는 것은 사실입니다. 그리고 동부는 좋은데 한국에서 물리적으로 조금 멀기에 부담을 느끼는 것도 사실입니다. 이런 여러 조건을 볼 때 SEMO는 좋은 솔루션이 될 것입니다.
