Visiting Scholar 혹은 Research Scholar는 호스트 대학을 방문해서 방문자가 제출한 연구계획서대로 교육하고나 강의하거나 연구를 수행하는 일을 하는 사람으로 대부분의 경우가 급여가 없으며, 오히려 호스트 학교에 참가비를 지불합니다.
그리고, 방문연구 혹은 연구학자들은 1년 혹은 2년 동안 체류하면서 학술세미나, 행사 등에 참여하면서 개인 연구활동을 하게 되는데, 가족을 동반할 수 있습니다. 미국의 여러 대학에서 이런 방문학자를 받아들이고 있고, 특히, 미국 대학의 한국학센터에서 정기적으로 방문학자를 모집하고 있습니다. 오늘은 미국서부의 명문 공립대학인 UCLA에 있는 한국학센터에서 제공하는 Visiting Scholar 프로그램에 대해서 알아보겠습니다.
매년 UCLA 한국학센터는 역동적인 연구 환경으로 인해 UCLA에 관심이 있는 전세계 대학과 기관의 학자들을 환영하고 있습니다. 이 방문자에는 한국학의 모든 분야를 대표하는 대학교수, 학자, 고위공무원들이 포함됩니다.
이 방문자들은 LA 커뮤니티 전체뿐만 아니라 센터의 교수진과 대학원생들에게 귀중한 자료를 제공하고, 한국학에 대한 UCLA의 범위를 강화합니다. 센터는 방문학자에게 제한적인 행정 지원을 하고, 학자들이 UCLA의 도서관과 연구시설에 접근할 수 있도록 도움을 줍니다. 대학 전체의 공간 부족때문에 이들에게 개인 사무실 공간을 제공할 수 없습니다.
한국학센터는 방문학자를 운영하는데 드는 비용을 지불하기 위해 참가자들에게 관리비를 부과하는데요. 현재 비용은 학계에서 온 참가자의경우는 3,500불, 비학술계의 경우는 8,500불을 받고 있습니다. 여기서 학계(Academics)는 4년제 대학에서 전임 교수진을 가진 PhD 학위를 받은 교수를 말합니다. 참가비 이외에 신청비와 비자서비스 수수료는 다음과 같습니다.

방문학자 참가 자격 조건은 아래와 같으며, 영어 능력을 갖춰야 합니다.
- Ph.D., or equivalent evidence of professional achievement, or minimum 5 years of experience in that field, by the time the appointment would begin.
- Preference is given to scholars from institutions with which UCLA has signed academic-exchange agreements and to scholars who are personally recommended by UCLA faculty in Korean Studies.
- All applicants must be affiliated with an established institution (i.e. Academic Institution, Government, Media Institutions and Companies)
- All applicants must provide documentation certifying sufficient proficiency in the English Language.
- A UCLA faculty member's consent to serve as the university sponsor for the applicant during his or her stay at UCLA.
- Due to space and administrative limitations, there is an annual quota on the number of visiting scholars who may be invited by the Center. The Center may not be able to accommodate all qualified candidates who apply in any one year.
영어 능력은 토플과 아이엘츠만 받으며, 시험성적은 2년 이내에 치러진 결과여야 합니다. 아이엘츠는 7점 이상, 토플은 87점 이상입니다. 만약, 영어성적이 없다면, 자신의 영어 실력을 증명할 수 있는 서류로 대체 가능합니다.
매년 두 번의 시작일이 있습니다. 1월 1일과 9월 1일로 체크인에 앞서 1개월 먼저 입국 가능합니다. 1월 1일 시작의 경우, 참가자는 12월이나 1월에 언제든지 미국에 들어올 수 있습니다. 6개월의 프로그램도 있는데, 이 과정은 연중내내 열려 있습니다.
지원자는 자신의 정보와 필요한 서류를 제출해야 하며, 파일 형식은 워드 혹은 PDF입니다.
- A curriculum vitae or professional resume.
- A proposal that focuses on Korean Studies (2-3 pages double-spaced) describing the research plan that will be undertaken while in residence at the Center.
- A scanned copy of passport clearly showing both pages (picture and signature).
- A letter of recommendation from a scholar with expertise in the area of the applicant's intended research (required only for non-academic applicants).
- A certified statement of financial support from the applicant's place of employment or financial institution. (Affidavit of Support)
- Documentation certifying sufficient proficiency in the English Language:
입학 신청은 아주 일찍 해야 합니다. 센터는 제한된 수의 방문학자를 받기 때문에 늦게 지원하면, 자리를 잡을 수 없습니다. 온라인 지원하기 전에 미리 센터에 연락해서 지원서를 여전히 받고 있는지 확인할 필요가 있습니다. 일년에 두 번 시작하는 프로그램의 신청 기간은 별도로 제공되지만, 이 기간 안에서 되도록 일찍 지원하는 것이 좋습니다. 입학수속은 3개월이 넘게 걸리며, 비자 발급 신청하는데도 시간이 걸린다는 것을 명심해야 합니다.

UCLA의 방문학자에 참가하려면 다음의 보험 보상한도에 맞는 유학생 보험도 준비해야 합니다. 가족을 동반할 경우, 동반하는 가족의 보험도 준비해야 합니다.
• $100,000 per accident & illness in medical coverage
• Deductible cannot exceed $500 per accident or illness
• Coinsurance that does not exceed 25%
• Medical evacuation up to $50,000
• Repatriation up to $25,000
• Pre-existing conditions must be covered with a waiting period no longer than 12 months
• Carrier must be at least A- rated
