오늘은 반달곰원장이 미국 보스톤대학교 Bostn University의 방문학자 프로그램에 대해서 말씀드리겠습니다. Boston University의 Global Programs에서는 세계의 유수한 학자들을 초청하는데 전체적인 규모에서 초청하지 않고 학과별로 초청하는 것을 기본으로 하고 있습니다. 그런데, 학과별로 초청은 하나 공통적인 부분이 있는데 아래와 같습니다.
The prospective visitor’s educational and experiential background, scholarly achievements, area of academic interest, and English language skills
The specific research proposal
Institutional affiliations (possibilities of longer-term collaboration)
Most importantly, the availability and interest of a BU faculty member to supervise or collaborate in the proposed research project or otherwise mentor the prospective visitor
방문학자로 초청받기 위해서는 아카데믹수준이 높아야 하고 영어능력이 좋아야 합니다. 그리고 구체적인 연구계획서를 작성 제출해야 하고 기관차원에서 연관성이 있으면 좋습니다. 장기적인 안목에서 보스톤대학교와 협력관계를 가질 수 있는 기관에서 오시면 좋다는 이야기입니다. 그리고 가장 중요한 것은 멘토를 해줄 교수님이 있어야 한다는 것입니다. 그러므로 본인의 전공이나 전문분야와 가장 매치가 잘 되는 교수님을 찾아서 초청확인을 받아야 합니다.
그럼 Boston University로 방문학자로 가기 위해서 지원에 필요한 서류는 무엇인지 알아보겠습니다.
A résumé or curriculum vitae
A description of the proposed research, including a statement explaining why BU is an appropriate setting for the work
The name of the BU faculty member or members whom the prospective visitor proposes to serve as his or her mentor
A letter of recommendation from an academic colleague
The proposed length and dates of the visit
If the prospective visitor is interested in observing a particular course, a statement indicating the course and the reasons for the interest
입학지원조건을 살펴보면 대부분은 이미 알고 있는 것이고 당연히 준비해서 제출해야 하지만 가장 중요한 것이 본인을 초청할, 멘토로서 역할을 할 보스톤대학교의 교수님 초청의사가 가장 중요하다고 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 영어에서 대한 규정은 아래와 같습니다.
If the prospective visitor’s native language is not English, a description of relevant experience and training in English and the degree of their proficiency with the English language. Proficiency expectations may vary by discipline and research project, and is ultimately decided by the host department or faculty member.
과 학과별로 영어조건은 상이할 수 있으므로 초청받고자 하는 학과에서 확인을 받아서 준비하면 됩니다. 그런데 보통은 영어 토플점수를 요구하고 있으므로 토플점수를 준비하는 것이 좋습니다. 방문학자로 초청받는 분들은 일정의 비용을 학교에 내야 하는데 그 범위는 1년에 5000달러-1만달러 수준입니다.
미국으로 자녀교육과 본인의 휴식을 위해서 방문학자들을 원하고 계십니다. 지금은 미국의 코로나 사태가 더욱 악화되고 있어 걱정이 되나 백신과 치료제가 개발되면 이런 사태는 잠잠해지리라 믿고 있습니다. 방문학자 가는데까지 기간이 최소 6개월에서 1년정도 시간이 걸리는데 지금 준비하면 갈 때쯤 되면 코로나가 많이 해결될 것입니다. 그러므로 지금부터 서서히 준비하시는 것이 좋을 것 같습니다. 도움이 필요하신 분들은 반달곰원장에게 문의주시길 바랍니다. 친절하게 컨설팅 해드리겠습니다.
