오늘은 반달곰원장이 세계경제의 중심지인 뉴욕 맨하탄에서 방문학자 생활을 할 수 있는 방법을 안내해드리겠습니다. 반달곰원장이 몇년전에 모 방송국의 기자님을 방문학자로 보내드렸었던 미국의 탑랭킹 대학교이자 아이비리그중의 하나인 Columbia University 콜롬비아대학교 방문학자프로그램에 대해서 설명을 드리고자 하는 것입니다.
콜롬비아대학교 명문대학교이기에 비즈니스스쿨을 비롯한 여러 기관에서 방문학자를 초빙하고 있습니다. 그런데 우리나라 공무원들이나 언론인 그리고 전문직분들이 가기 좋은 프로그램은 바로 콜롬비아대학교의 한국학 연구소라고 할 수 있는 Center for Korean Research 에서 제공하는 프로그램입니다. 이 Center for Korean Research는 Weatherhead East Asian Institute의 한 기관인데 한국의 훌륭하신 분들을 방문학자로 초빙을 하고 있습니다.
콜롬비아 한국학센터로의 방문학자 프로그램은 다른 대학교의 방문학자 프로그램과는 조금 다릅니다. 왜냐하면 한국 소속기관의 스폰서쉽을 요구하지는 않지만 콜롬비아대학교내의 어느 기관의 교수님으로부터 멘토링을 받아야 합니다. 그러므로 혹시나 콜롬비아대학교에서 스폰서링이 없어서 고민하는 분들은 반달곰원장에게 문의를 하시길 바랍니다. 그럼 콜롬비아대학교 방문학자 프로그램의 특징을 살펴보겠습니다.
Visiting Scholars may affiliate with the Institute for one or two semesters, and must be sponsored by an Institute faculty member during their stay. Scholars must attend a Visiting Scholars luncheon once a year, and provide a final report of 250 words to be submitted to the Institute director at the end of their stay.
콜롬비아대학교에 체류하는 동안에는 교수님의 스폰을 받아야하고 일년에 한번은 방문학자 점심행사에 참석해야 합니다. 그리고 방문학자로서 연구가 끝나는 시기에는 프로그램 디렉터에게 250단어내의 리포트를 제출해야 합니다.
그리고 방문학자로 갈 때 가장 중요한 부분인 영어능력관련하여 안내를 해드리겠습니다.
Language Requirements
Working knowledge of spoken and written English is necessary. Applicants whose English proficiency is insufficient should consider applying for enrollment in the Columbia University American Language Program (ALP), a twelve-week intensive English language program which runs from May to August.
영어점수로는 토플과 IELTS등을 제출하고 인터뷰를 잘 하면 되는데 저의 방문학자는 토익점수도 받아주었습니다. 그런데 영어실력이 부족하다고 판단될 경우 콜롬비아대학교 부설어학원인 English Language Program ELP에서 12주간의 영어공부를 하면은 됩니다. 보통 5월에서 8월까지 진행이 됩니다. 영어공부하는 것은 문제가 아닌데 학비가 매우 비싸다는 것이 문제입니다. 그러니 영어는 잘 준비하시길 바랍니다.

Application Requirements
Sponsorship of an Institute faculty member
Current affiliation with an academic institution and a Ph.D. in respective area or field
Proficiency in written and spoken English (exemption from this requirement is permitted only under special circumstances)
$500 visa processing fee
$100 administrative application fee (by check made payable to Columbia University; or by money order)
Proof of sufficient funds for the duration of stay
Application Procedure
If you meet the above requirements, please submit the following items to be considered for the program:
curriculum vitae
research proposal
letter of recommendation by sponsoring Institute faculty member
In addition to the $500 visa processing fee and $100 application fee, you will need at least $2800 per month for yourself to cover living expenses. If your family intends to accompany you, an additional $1,000 per month for your spouse and $500 per month per child is required.
콜롬비아대학교는 학교명성에 맞게 방문학자 지원서비도 비싸고 체류하는데 드는 administration fee도 상당히 비싼 편입니다. 한학기에 1만달러. 즉 일년이면 2만달러 정도의 비용이 발생합니다. 그러니 신중하게 생각하시고 도전하실 필요가 있습니다. 안식년개념이지만 본인의 커리어에 콤롬비아대학교에서 방문학자를 했다는 사실을 넣을 수 있다면 큰 의미가 있을 것입니다.

Application Deadlines
To begin research on January 1st (Spring Semester) applications to be submitted by* October 1 of the preceding year.
To begin research on September 1st (Fall Semester) applications to be submitted by* May 15 of that year.
*The fall semester generally runs from September 1 to December 20, and the spring semester from January 15 to May 15.
