안녕하세요, 반달곰원장입니다.
많은 분들이 생각하는 것처럼 세월이 정말 빠릅니다. 국정농단에 촛불을 들고 일어섰던 국민들, 그리고 탄핵, 구속, 새대통령선출 등등 정말 짧은 시간에 많은 일들이 순식간에 지나간 것 같습니다. 반달곰원장이 두바이출장을 다녀온지 5일만에 바로 미국 미시간대학교 앤아버로 이동하였고 지금은 엘에이에 와 있습니다. 지난달은 워싱턴대학교가 있는 시애틀에 방문했었습니다. 그러면서 반달곰원장이 꾸준하게 방문했던 곳들이 바로 한국학센터들이었습니다.
그런데 1년전 작년 7월에 하와이대학교를 방문 하였었는데 그때도 한국학센터 Center for Studies를 방문하였었습니다. 그런데 그 이후에 한번도 하와이대학교 한국학센터에 대해서 소개를 하지 못해서 반성하는 차원에서 이렇게 늦은 방문후기와 하와이대학교 한국학센터 방문학자프로그램에 가기 위해서 무엇이 필요한지 살펴보려고 합니다.
하와이대학교 한국학센터 Center for Korean Studies 를 가보면 한국의 경복궁에 있는 궁궐과 향원정을 그대로 본뜻한 건물을 보고 놀랄 것입니다. 이런 하와이땅에, 하와이대학교 캠퍼스안에 이런 건물이 있다는 것은 한국인으로서 매우 자랑스럽고 보람스럽더군요. 그러고 보면 미국안에는 한국학센터가 상당히 많은 것 같습니다. 그런데 하와이대학교 한국학센터에는 그렇게 많은 분들이 방문학자로 가시는 것 같지는 않더군요. 한국 공무원들을 많이 도와드려야 겠다는 생각이 많이 들더군요.

하와이대학교 한국학센터로 방문학자로 가기 위해서는 먼저 하와대학교 교수님의 스폰을 받아야 합니다. 즉, 방문학자로 연구할려고 하는 연구주제와 연관이 가장 많은 붕야의 교수님과 연락을 하여 초청의사를 받아야 하는 것이 가장 중요한데 이것이 가장 어렵습니다. 이런 문제를 풀어드리는 것이 반달곰원장이 할 일이니 반달곰원장에게 도움을 요청하시고 방문학자 후보자들께서는 아래의 입학지원 절차와 서류를 준비하시는데 집중하는 것이 중요합니다.
All application materials must be submitted in English. A complete application consists of the following documents:
- A cover letter.
- Completed Visitor Information Form
- A curriculum vitae or professional resumé (with the applicant’s date and place of birth and a complete list of publications).
- A detailed proposal (3–5 pages) outlining the research that will be undertaken while in residence at the Center.The proposal should include a statement of the objectives of the research, a description of the methodology, and a bibliography. It should also include a description of the academic and scholarly value of the proposal, a realistic plan of how the project will be carried out, justification for research at the University of Hawai‘i Center for Korean Studies, and the name of a CKS faculty member with whom the applicant has arranged to work.
- A brief description of a lecture or other presentation the applicant proposes to deliver or indication of other ways in which he or she plans to contribute to Center programs while in residence.
- Two letters of recommendation from scholars with expertise in the area of the applicant’s intended research.
- A certified statement of financial support from the applicant’s place of employment or financial institution. The statement must show support of a minimum US$2,000 per month for each month of residence for the J-1 visitor plus an additional $700 per month for the J-2 spouse and $500 per month each for each accompanying J-2 child.
- Confirm English proficiency through the results of the TOEFL or IELTS or a signed certificate or letter from an academic institution or English language school no more than two years old. If you are unable to provide documentation of English proficiency, an interview conducted by UH is an option. In this case, please indicate that you would like an English interview on a separate sheet of paper when mailing application materials.
The application deadline for entry in the fall 2017 semester is Friday, February 24, 2017.
The application deadline for visiting scholars desiring to enter the program in the spring/summer 2018 semester is Friday, August 4, 2017.
