오늘은 반달곰원장이 다음주에 출장을 가게 되는 미국 하와이에 있는 유명한 대학교인 University of Hawaii at Manoa 의 Center for Korean Studies 의 방문학자 프로그램에 대해서 설명을 드리겠습니다. 한국학센터는 캘리포니아의 UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, 그리고 워싱턴주의 University of Washington, 아틀란타의 조지메이슨대학교의 한국학 센터, 그리고 뉴욕주의 뉴욕주립대 빙햄턴 캠퍼스등이 유명합니다만, 하와이대학교 마노아캠퍼스의 한국학 센터도 유명합니다.
University of Hawaii at Manoa Center for Korean Studies 에서 설명하는 방문학자 프로그램 내용을 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
The Center for Korean Studies furthers its mission as an academic and research institution by providing office space and limited administrative assistance to visiting scholars. Each year, scholars from universities and other institutions throughout the world come to the Center for periods ranging from six to twelve months for their research projects.
These researchers, including post-graduate students and scholars, representing various disciplines of Korean studies, are drawn to the Center for access to the research facilities of the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. The visiting scholars, in turn, are expected to be a resource for the Center's faculty, students, and the Hawai‘i community as a whole.
전세계의 대학교나 기관들에서 방문학자들이 오는데 오피스 공간도 주고 제한적이지만 행정적 도움도 준다고 하지요. 그리고 제일 중요한 방문학자로서 체류할 수 있는 기간은 6개월에서 1년이라고 되어 있습니다. 그러므로 보통 1년을 안식년으로 부여받는 한국의 교수님들, 공무원부들, 그리고 변호사, 의사등 다양한 분야의 전문직 종사자들도 지원을 해볼 수가 있겠습니다.
그런데 University of Hawaii at Manoa CKS 방문학자 프로그램은 방문학자들에게 써포트를 해줄 교수님을 요청하고 있습니다. 그래서 지원서에 어느 교수님의 도움을 받기로 했다고 알려주어야 합니다. 이 부분이 어려운 부분이나 반달곰원장이 도와드릴 수 있는 부분이고요, 다만 방문학자에게 강의나 프리젠테이션을 요구하는 경우가 있는데 이것은 나중에 미국에 가서 방문학자분이 해결하셔야 하는 부분입니다. 진짜 강의를 할 수도 있고 아니면 교수와 잘 협의하여 그냥 연구만 도와주는 방향으로 정리할 수가 있지요.
UH at Manoa 한국학센터 방문학자에 지원하기 위해서는 아래와 같은 admission requirements가 필요합니다.
All application materials must be submitted in English. A complete application consists of a cover letter accompanied by the following documents:
- Completed Visitor Information Form.
- A curriculum vitae or professional resumé (with the applicant’s date and place of birth and a complete list of publications).
- A detailed proposal (3–5 pages) outlining the research that will be undertaken while in residence at the Center. The proposal should include a statement of the objectives of the research, a description of the methodology, and a bibliography. It should also include a description of the academic and scholarly value of the proposal, a realistic plan of how the project will be carried out, justification for research at the University of Hawai‘i Center for Korean Studies, and the name of a CKS faculty member with whom the applicant has arranged to work.
- A brief description of a lecture or other presentation the applicant proposes to deliver or indication of other ways in which he or she plans to contribute to Center programs while in residence.
- Two letters of recommendation from scholars with expertise in the area of the applicant’s intended research.
- A certified statement of financial support from the applicant’s place of employment or financial institution. The statement must show support of a minimum US$2,000 per month for each month of residence for the J-1 visitor plus an additional $700 per month for the J-2 spouse and $500 per month each for each accompanying J-2 child.
- Confirm English proficiency through the results of the TOEFL or IELTS or a signed certificate or letter from an academic institution or English language school, or documented interview conducted by UH, either in-person or by video conferencing. A telephone interview is an option only if an in-person interview or a video conference is not possible. The interviewer must attach a list of the questions asked, responses given, and comments on the suitability of the responses.
위에서 볼 수 있는 것 처럼 3-5페이지의 연구계획서, 그리고 한국학센터에 기여하기 위하 전달할 부분에 대한 프리젠테이션 자료나 요약자료등이 필요합니다. 다른 방문학자 프로그램처럼 만만하지는 않으나 다행히도 영어조건에서는 토플점수가 없을시에 인터뷰로 대신 할 수가 있어 그나마 조금은 수월한 부분이 있습니다.
그리고 하와이대학교 한국학센터 방문학자 프로그램에는 지원 데드라인이 있는데 2017년 봄과 여름과정에 조인하고 싶으신 분들은 지원서를 8월 5일까지 제출하셔야 합니다. 그리고 2017년 가을에 조인을 원하시는 분들은 2017년 2월 24일까지 지원서를 제출하시면 됩니다. MBA과정은 아니지만 1년전에는 서둘러서 준비를 하셔야 합니다.
천혜의 자연환경이 있는 미국 하와이에 있는 하와이대학교 마노아 캠퍼스의 한국학센터의 방문학자 프로그램. 방문학자 프로그램의 또 다른 목적중의 하나가 휴식인데 확실하게 즐기고 오지 않으실까 싶습니다. 다만 회사에 정부에 하와이대학교로 간다고 이야기하면 놀러 가는구나 라는 인식을 주게 되는 것이 문제아닌 문제일텐데 이런 admission requiremens등을 보여주면서 절대 쉬운 과정이 아님을 보여주시길 바라겠습니다. 반달곰원장이 하와이로 보내드리겠으니 언제든지 연락주시길 바랍니다.
