미국 캘리포니아지역에서 학생들에게 직장인들에게 가장 사랑 받는 학교는 아마도 UCSD가 아닐가 싶습니다. 그래서 UCSD English Language Institute로 많은 학생들과 직장인들이 영어어학연수와 business management/business essential 등 비즈니스 전문 연수를 하러 갑니다. 그런데 UCSD ELI의 어학연수 프로그램중에서 특화된 프로그램이 있는데 그것은 바로 Intensive Legal English(ILE)라는 10주 과정입니다.
이 ILE과정은 모든 학생들에게 적합한 것은 아니고 아래와 같은 학생들 또는 직장인들에게 적합한 프로그램입니다.
who have a minimum of 4 - 6 months of previous legal studies or law-related work experience
who are interested in both improving their English skills while learning about the U.S. legal system
위의 기본적인 조건을 가지고 있는 학생이나 직장인들에게 좋은 프로그램이 ILE과정인데 가장 중요한 것은 영어실력이 좋아야 한다는 것입니다. 미국의 법과 그에 관련한 영어공부를 10주동안 할려면 당연히 상당한 영어실력이 있어야만 수업을 따라갈 수가 있습니다. 그래서 실력을 갖추고 있는지 어떤지를 알기 위해서 첫주에 치르는 영어 placement test에서 레벨 108-110을 받아야만 합니다. 물론 그 외에 입학지원할 때부터 상당한 수준의 토플점수나 IELTS점수를 만들어서 제출해야 합니다. 그 기준 점수와 부가적인 조건을 살펴보면 아래와 같습니다.
Additional Admission Requirements:
Student must have a language proficiency score of 90 iBT or IELTS 7.5
Students must submit a brief statement to explain previous law-related coursework or work experience, and purpose of taking this program.

위에서 보시다시피 IBT 90, IELTS 7.5는 이미 미국명문대학교 LLM과정의 기준 영어점수에 육박합니다. 이런 영어실력을 바탕으로 10주 동안 아래와 같은 과정을 이수하면 미국의 명문 대학교 LLM과정에 조건부입학을 할 수가 있습니다.
Required Courses:
Special nine-hour core class providing:
- an introduction to or a review of the U.S. legal systems
- trial procedures
- landmark cases
- social/cultural trends that affect the law
- guest lectures by legal scholars and practicing attorneys
- readings, vocabulary study, and discussion
- participant presentations
- class excursions to a courthouse or other sites related to local law services
- Required: Grammar or Advanced Vocabulary and Discussion through Film (4 hours)
9 hours of class chosen from a list of elective classes which may include the followign advanced courses:
- Business Reading and Discussion
- Conversation
- Idioms and Slang

- Discussion through American Music

- Oral Presentations

이 과정을 훌륭하게 이수하고 조건부 입학할 수 있는 대학교는 University of San Diego School of Law, California Western School of Law, Thomas Jefferson School of Law등 세 대학교입니다. 그럼 왜 UCSD School of Law는 조건부입학이 안됩니까? 라고 질문 할 수가 있는데 정작 이 프로그램을 제공하고 UCSD 에는 law school이 없습니다. 그래서 law school방문학자 프로그램을 원하시는 분들이 UCSD를 너무나 가고 싶어하는 law school이 없어서 USD School of Law, Pepperdine University School of Law등으로 방문학자 프로그램을 가시는 것입니다.
