카네기 멜론은 6개의 학부 단과대학에서 80개의 전공과 90개 이상의 부전공 과정을 제공합니다.
이 대학의 입학 지원은 Common Application 플랫폼을 통해 이루어지며, 다음과 같은 기본적인 서류 및 준비물이 필요합니다.

Carnegie Mellon University has adopted a test-optional policy for one year, removing the SAT/ACT standardized testing requirement for first-year Fall 2021 applicants.
그리고, 영어가 모국어가 아닌 학생의 경우 TOEFL이나 IELTS시험 성적을 제출해야 하는데요. 입학 신청을 위해서 지원자가 만들어야 하는 최소한 점수로 토플은 102점 이상, IELTS는 7.5 이상입니다.
We require the TOEFL or IELTS from all non-native English speakers.* Carnegie Mellon requires a TOEFL score of 102 or better on the IBT TOEFL or an IELTS score of 7.5 or better. Sub-scores are also carefully reviewed, with consideration given to those with sub-scores of 25 or higher on the TOEFL or 7.5 or higher on the IELTS.

카네기 멜론 대학 지원 시 필요한 요소인 에세이에 대해서 알아보겠습니다. 입학 프로세스의 일부로 지원학생은 3개의 300단어 제한의 질문에 대한 답변을 에세이로 작성하고, 150단어 제한의 질문에 대해 선택사항으로 답변을 달아야 합니다.
Prompt 1 (required): Most students choose their intended major or area of study based on a passion or inspiration that’s developed over time – what passion or inspiration led you to choose this area of study? (300 words)
Prompt 2 (required): Many students pursue college for a specific degree, career opportunity or personal goal. Whichever it may be, learning will be critical to achieve your ultimate goal. As you think ahead to the process of learning during your college years, how will you define a successful college experience? (300 words)
Prompt 3 (required): Consider your application as a whole. What do you personally want to emphasize about your application for the admission committee’s consideration? Highlight something that’s important to you or something you haven’t had a chance to share. Tell us, don’t show us (no websites please). (300 words)
Prompt 4 (optional): Understanding an applicant’s individual context surrounding test scores can be useful to our admission committee. If you’d like, please share any information about your standardized test scores or inability to take standardized tests. This is an optional question and will only be used as additional information to evaluate your academic record. (150 words)
첫 번째 질문은 간단합니다. 지원자가 무엇을 공부하길 원하는지, 왜 이 전공이 좋아서 자신의 인생에서 최소한 4년을 바치려고 하는지에 대해서 서술해야 하는 질문입니다. 읽는 사람의 입장에서 이 질문은 지원자 자신의 예전 경험과 열정과 연결하기를 기대할 것입니다. 자신의 이야기를 들려준다고 생각하고, 자신이 살아온 경험에 대한 구체적인 묘사를 통해 왜 이 전공을 공부하고자 하는지 잘 풀어가시기 바랍니다.
두 번째 질문은 자신의 교육적 경험에서 가장 중요한 것이 무엇인지를 묻습니다. 교육 경험을 형성하는데 많은 요소들이 영향을 끼치는데, 과정선택이 될 수 있고, 교수님, 클래스 친구들, 캠퍼스 문화나 대학이 위치한 도시까지도 학생이 대학을 다니는 동안 분리할 수 없는 중요한 요소입니다. 이런 것들이 자신에게 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 생각해 보고 자신이 찾고 있는 것이 무엇인지를 고민해야 합니다. 학교 홈페이지도 살펴보고 대학에서의 배움의 과정도 미리 생각해보면서 어떻게 해야 성공적으로 대학 생활을 해 나갈 수 있는지 충분히 생각해 보세요.
세 번째 질문은 자유 에세이와 비슷합니다. 자신을 가장 잘 드러낼 수 있는 부분에 대해서 언급할 수 있고, 신청서에 기재되지 않는 자신의 장점에 대해서 입학사정관에게 보여줄 수 있는 질문입니다. 이미 SOP에 썼던 내용에 대해 언급하는 것은 최악의 시나리오로 자신에 대해서 입학사정관에게 알리고 싶은 주제가 무엇인지 잘 생각해 보시기 바랍니다.
네 번째는 선택사항으로 쓰게 된다면, SAT/ACT를 제출하지 못했던 상황에 대해서 설명할 수 있는 부분이라 할 수 있습니다. 성적이 좋지 않아 점수를 선택하지 않기로 한 경우로, 반드시 특별한 사정이 있는 것은 아니기에 답변을 비워 두는 것이 낫습니다.
