미국 최초의 카톨릭 대학으로 1789년에 설립된 Georgetown University는 워싱턴 DC에 캠퍼스를 두고 있는 사립의 명문 연구대학입니다.
US News & World Report 2020랭킹의 Best National Universities에서 23위를 차지한 조지타운대학은 2019년 가을학기 입학에서 Acceptance Rate 14%로 입학하기 까다로운 대학에 속합니다. 조지타운대학의 인기 전공은 사회과학, 비즈니스, 경영, 마케팅, 외국어, 문학, 언어학, 생물학과 생의학과학 등입니다.
조지타운대학에 입학 전형은 두 가지 방법으로 진행됩니다. 하나는 Early Action이고 다른 하나는 Regular Decision입니다.
Early Action은 학생이 고등학교 3학년 혹은 12학년일 때 일찍 입학 결과를 알 수 있는 전형으로 입학 사정관은 학생의 고등학교 2학년 혹은 11학년 말까지의 학업 결과와 성과에 초점을 두고 심사합니다. 조지타운 얼리 액션은 학생들이 합격 통보를 받은 후 학교측에 답을 해야 하는 Reply Date (회신날짜)인 5월 1일까지 여러 대학 중 자유롭게 선택할 수 있어야 한다는 신념에 근거를 둔다고 합니다. 그래서, 얼리 액션에 합격한 학생들은 Regular Decision 지원자들과 같은 회신 날짜를 갖게 됩니다.
조지타운대학의 지원은 Georgetown Application을 통해 이루어집니다. 입학지원에 필요한 서류는 다음과 같습니다.

위의 서류목록을 보면, SAT/ACT 시험 성적은 이번 입시에서 여전히 제출해야 하는 서류로 안내를 하고 있습니다. 조지타운의 신입 지원자는 SAT나 ACT 시험 성적을 둘 중 하나는 제출해야 하고, SAT 과목 시험은 권장하나 의무사항은 아니라고 합니다.
Standardized Testing Policy:
Georgetown will continue to require submission of either the SAT or ACT for all first-year applicants. Submission of three SAT Subject tests is recommended but not required. While Subject tests are a valued portion of our holistic admissions review process, these tests should not create a barrier for applicants. The Committee on Admissions considers all facets of student achievement and within the context of each applicant’s experience, location, and environment.

Georgetown Application 제출은 먼저 조지타운 신청서를 작성하고 제출하고 나서 24시간 이내에 이메일을 하나 받게 됩니다. 여기에는 신청 어카운트를 만드는 법에 대한 안내가 있고, 지원자는 Application Supplement를 시작할 수 있게 됩니다.
여기에서는 자신의 특별한 재능 및 스킬에 대해 적어야 하는 공간이 따로 있고, Essay Requirements를 확인할 수 있습니다. 에세이에서는 Short Essay와 두 개의 에세이를 작성하게 됩니다.
1: Indicate any special talents or skills you possess.
2: Briefly (1/2 page, single-spaced ) discuss the significance to you of the school or summer activity in which you have been most involved.
2번 에세이 질문은 폰트 크기에 따라 다르겠지만, 대략 300-400 단어 정도 작성을 하면 되는 양입니다. 이 질문에 답변하는 핵심 전략은 어떤 활동이나 프로그램이 지원자의 관심사와 가치를 가장 잘 보여주는지를 알아내는 것입니다. 가장 많은 시간을 할애한 동아리나 입학사정관에게 가장 깊은 인상을 준다고 생각하는 활동을 고르기보다는 잠시 시간을 갖고 자신에게 영감을 주었던 그런 활동을 고르는 것이 좋습니다. 자신이 가장 열정적이였던 것을 고르고 왜 그랬는지를 보여주는 것이 가장 좋은 방법입니다.

위 질문은 가장 일반적인 에세이 질문입니다. 이 에세이를 통해 지원자는 누구이고 가치관이 무엇인지, 무엇이 지원자를 움직이는지, 자신을 가장 독특하게 만드는 것이 무엇인지에 대해 입학사정관이 알 수 있는 부분입니다.
그리고, 각 칼리지별로 주어지는 에세이가 있습니다. 한 페이지를 초과할 수 없고, 대략 500~700 단어 정도로 작성하는 질문이 주어집니다.
