MIT 입학 정보 및 국내 SAT 시험 공식 센터 상황

많은 미국 대학들의 올해 입시에서 SAT나 ACT를 Optional로 받겠다고 하거나 아예 제출 면제가 가능하다는 등의 발표가 있었습니다. SAT는 8월, 9월, 10월, 12월, 3월과 5월에 미국 내뿐만 아니라 미국 이외의 지역에서도 제공되고 있습니다. 가장 빠른 SAT 시험은 2020년 가을인 9월에 볼 수 있습니다.
코로나 바이러스가 전세계적으로 2차, 3차 확산으로 이어지면서 감염의 두려움으로 국내에서도 사회적 거리두기를 꾸준히 이어나가고 있습니다. 이런 상황에서 한 공간에 많은 사람이 모여 있어야 하는 공식 시험들이 줄줄이 취소되거나 연기되고 있습니다.
SAT 시험도 같은 문제 때문에 SAT나 SAT 과목 시험을 준비하는 학생들은 난처한 상황에 놓이게 되었습니다. SAT 시험을 위해 문을 연 공식 테스트 센터를 찾는 것이 쉽지 않아 보입니다.
한국에서는 8월 시험에 7개의 SAT 공식 시험센터가 문을 닫았습니다. 북일고, 대국국제학교, 강남국제학교, 거제국제학교, 한국켄트외국인학교, 한국과학영재학교, 베일러국제학교가 포함되었습니다. 칼리지보드의 검색을 통해 아래와 같은 7개의 시험센터가 문을 닫았다는 것을 확인할 수 있었습니다.

9월 26일 SAT 시험에 대해서는 국내에서는 10개의 공식시험센터가 문을 연다고 하니 상황을 좀더 지켜봐야 할 듯합니다.
올해 입시에서 미국의 많은 대학이 SAT나 ACT 시험을 면제 혹은 옵션으로 지정을 해서 시험 성적을 제출하지 않아도 되었지만, 2021학년도 가을학기 입학 지원에서도 똑같이 적용을 될지 모를 일입니다. 그래서, 시간이 된다면, SAT 가능한 시험 일정에 맞춰 시험을 응시해서 대학 입학 전형에 미리 대비를 해야 하지만, 이 역시 불안하기만 합니다. 그래서, 미국 대학 입학신청 시 SAT/ACT 성적을 면제해 주는 MIT 대학에 대해 얘기해볼까 합니다.
US News & World Report 2020 Best Colleges 랭킹에서 4위를 차지한 MIT는 미국 매사추세츠주의 캠브리지에 있는 명문의 공과대학입니다. 이 대학에서도 코로나 바이러스 확산으로 종전의 SAT/ACT 점수 제출을 자격 요건을 잠시 보류해서 다음의 입학 전형에서 제출할 필요가 없다고 합니다. 다음의 입학전형이라 하면, 2021년 가을학기에 MIT에 입학하려고 하는 1학년 신입생과 편입생 모두에게 해당되는 사항입니다.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our office will be suspending our usual SAT/ACT testing requirement for the coming application cycle.
MIT와 같은 대단한 대학에 지원하는데 정말 SAT나 ACT 시험 성적을 안내도 괜찮을지 염려가 될 수 있습니다. 이미 시험 본 학생들은 입학심사에서 SAT/ACT 점수가 쓰일 테니 혹시 제출하지 못한 지원자는 이 점수 때문에 프로세싱에서 불이익을 당하지 않을까 걱정할 수밖에 없습니다. 코로나에 감염이 될지 모르는 상황이지만, 테스트 센터에 시험을 등록해서 가장 빠른 SAT 시험이라도 봐야 하는 것은 아닐까 초조하고 답답하다면, MIT에서 최근에 업데이트한 입학자격 요건을 살펴보시기 바랍니다.
- We will not require either the SAT or the ACT from first-year or transfer applicants applying this cycle. We expect this to be a one-year suspension of our usual requirements, but will continue to monitor the public health situation closely.
- Students who have already taken the SAT/ACT are encouraged to report their scores with the understanding that they help us more accurately evaluate their preparedness for MIT, and with the knowledge that tests are only one factor among many in that process.
s Please note: Going forward, we will no longer be requiring applicants to officially send their SAT, ACT, or English proficiency test scores as part of their application. Instead, they will be able to self-report their scores on the application, and we will verify these scores upon enrollment. There will be an opportunity to update us with any test results that become available after an application is submitted.
- Students who have not already taken the SAT/ACT are discouraged from doing so if they cannot do so safely, and/or are under such strain that they cannot perform to a degree commensurate with their actual preparation.
- Students who do not submit SAT/ACT scores will not have any negative inferences be drawn from their absence. Instead, we will make the best, most informed decision we can by assessing other academic aspects of their application like grades, curriculum, and other examinations.
MIT에 지원하기 위해 위험을 무릅쓰고 SAT 시험을 치르지 않아도 되는 이유가 바로 위의 네 번째 항목에 있습니다. SAT/ACT 점수를 제출하지 않은 학생이 점수가 없다고 부정적인 눈으로 심사를 받지 않아도 될 것 같습니다.
국제학생이라면, 영어권 국가에서 5년 이상 살면서 학교를 다니지 않았다면, 토플이나 아이엘츠 시험 성적을 제출하게끔 되어 있습니다. 토플은 최소 점수 90점, 아이엘츠는 7점으로 SAT/ACT를 포함해서 시험 성적은 원서에 점수를 기재할 뿐 학교에 제출할 필요는 없습니다. 원서에 기재한 원본은 합격하고 등록하는 시점에 학교에 제출해야 합니다.
