Pennsylvania State University는 일반적으로 Penn State 혹은 PSU라고 불리는 주립대학으로 1855년에 Farmers’ High School of Pennsylvania라는 이름으로 세워졌습니다. 이후에 University of State College로 알려지고, 교육, 연구, 공공 서비스를 제공하는 대학으로서 역할을 수행합니다. 펜실베니아 주립대학의 대표 캠퍼스가 바로 University Park로 Borough of State College와 College Township내에 자리잡고 있습니다. 두 개의 로스쿨이 있는데요. 하나는 University Park에 있는 Penn State Law이고, 다른 하나는 Carlisle에 위치한 Dickinson Law입니다. University Park 캠퍼스에 매년 등록하는 학부생, 대학원생 및 전문 프로그램 학생이 46,800명을 넘고 있어 미국에서 가장 큰 대학 중의 하나로 알려져 있습니다.

위처럼 고등학교때의 학업 성적 이외에 공인영어성적, 공식 시험성적이 필요한데요. 일반적인 전공이 아닌 경우 특별 프로그램에 대한 요구 조건이 다르니 사전에 꼼꼼히 확인하는 것이 중요합니다.
공인 영어 성적의 경우 TOEFL은 최소한 80점 이상을 요구하고 있고, IELTS는 6.5 이상의 점수가 필요합니다. 다른 시험 성적으로 가늠할 수 있는데, 다음의 조건을 충족하면 되겠습니다.
- SAT:
-Tests Prior to March 2016: a score of 530 or higher on the Critical Reading section. (code #2660)
-Tests March 2016 and later: a score of 570 or higher on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section (code #2660) - ACT: Score of 24 or higher on the English section (code #3656)
- GCSE or GCE Score of A, B, or C on the English language exam
- International Baccalaureate (IB): Score of 5 or higher on the English Language & Literature (SL/HL) exam
- U.S. College or University: High school graduation followed by two complete years of full-time academic coursework at a U.S. college or university with a grade of C (2.0) or higher in a standard English composition course
- IECP: Receive official certification through Penn State's Intensive English Communication Program (IECP)
PSU에 신입학으로 지원할 경우 반드시 ACT나 SAT 점수를 제출해야 하는데요. 두 시험의 작문 부분은 별도로 요구하지 않으며, SAT Subject 시험 성적도 필요 없습니다.
특별 프로그램이나 전공의 경우 시각예술 및 공연 예술, 예비 의학 프로그램, 과학 BS/MBA 과정, 골프 경영 프로그램을 말하며, 포트폴리오나 오디션 혹은 공식시험 성적의 최소 점수 등을 정해 놓고 있습니다.
신입학의 지원 마감 날짜는 아래와 같습니다. 신청서는 8월 1일부터 열려 있으며, 국제학생이 참고할 만한 신입학 지원 일정입니다.

PSU University Park의 2018-2019학년도의 학비 및 예상 경비는 아래의 표에서 확인할 수 있습니다. 공립학교인만큼 펜실베니아주 거주자와 그렇지 않은 학생의 학비에 차별을 두고 있지만, 다른 대학에 비해 학비가 그리 높은 편은 아닙니다. 기타 경비를 포함해서 5만불대이면, 비교적 저렴한 수준이라 할 수 있습니다.
