안녕하세요, 반달곰원장입니다.
오늘은 반달곰원장이 오랜만에 결혼식장을 다녀왔습니다. 아현중앙교회에서 열린 지인의 아들이 결혼을 했는데 여기에 참석하면서 재미있는 것을 경험하였습니다. 이 결혼식 소식을 전한 총무님이 밴드에, 이메일로, 문자로 수도 없이 결혼식장 장소가 아현중앙교회임을 누누히 알려줬으나 생각보다 많은 사람들이 아현중앙교회가 아닌 아현감리교회를 가거나 아현역 인근의 다른 교회로 간 후에서야 본인이 잘못온 것을 알고 다시 찾아 온 것이었습니다.
아무 것도 아닌 일이지만 반달곰원장은 반달곰원장이 컨실팅하는 일을 하는 만큼 남다르게 다가오더군요. 안내문속에 바른 정보를 주었는데 그 정보를 제대로 이해하지 못하고 겉으로만 살펴본 후에 그냥 아현역하나만 찾아서 왔다가 그냥 눈에 보이는 교회에 들어간 것이지요. 어떤 분은 너무나 찾아 헤매다가 지쳐서 그냥 돌아가신 분도 있었습니다. 이런 현상을 보면서 반달곰원장이 정말 좋은 프로그램을 설명하고 추천을 해도 제대로 이해하지 못하고 엉뚱한 학교, 엉뚱한 프로그램을 선택하는 분들이 계셔서 이런 부류의 사람들은 어디서나 많이 있구나 하는 것을 느꼈습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 아현중앙교회가 장소임을 여러번 알려주었던 총무처럼 반달곰원장은 제대로 학교, 제대로된 정보, 재대로 된 프로그램을 소개해드리도록 노력하겠습니다. 오늘은 반달곰원장이 UCSD 에서 제공하는 훌륭한 어학연수 프로그램을 소개해드리려고 합니다. 그런데 그냥 어학연수가 아니라 겨울방학동안 미국 학생비자받을 필요없이 관광비자로 영어공부할 수 있는 프로그램입니다. 일반적으로 주당 20시간의 수업을 듣기 위해서 학생비자가 필요합니다. 그런데 UCSD에서는 학생들의 비자발급에 대한 부담을 줄여주기 위해서 수업을 주당 20시간이 아닌 15시간으로 줄여서 무비자프로그램인 ESTA로 공부할 수 있게 프로그램을 살짝 조정하여 제공하는 것입니다.
그럼 무비자인 ESTA로 공부할 수 있는 프로그램 리스트를 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
4-week programs with just 15 hours/week will not include the following instruction/activities:
1. Conversation and Fluency (20 hours/week is full-time study.) The reading and writing component will be omitted; guest speakers and field trips will vary according to availability during the schedule of 15 hours per week for the tourist visa. Tuition for the 15-hour Conversation and Fluency program: $1,700 USD
2. Academic English (20 hours/week is full-time study; both the 2-week and 4-week programs) Only one additional class will be selected instead of the usual two additional classes; research paper writing class is not likely to be offered during the schedule of 15 hours per week for the tourist visa. Tuition for the 15-hour Academic English program: $1,700 USD
3. Business English (25 hours/week is full-time study for the F-1 student visa.) Business writing and some projects will be omitted; guest speakers and field trips will vary according to availability during the schedule of 15 hours per week for the tourist visa. Tuition for the 15-hour Business English program: $1,950 USD

4. Medical English (20 hours/week is full-time study for the F-1 student visa.) Writing, pronunciation refinement, reading practice, and vocabulary reinforcement will not be included in the 15 hours per week; guest speakers and field trips will vary according to availability during the program hours. Tuition for the 15-hour Medical English program: $2,200 USD
5. English for Pharmaceutical Studies (20 hours/week is full-time study for the F-1 student visa.) Technical writing and some projects will be omitted in the schedule of 15 hours per week for the tourist visa. Tuition for the 15-hour English for Pharmaceutical Studies program: $2,200 USD
6. English for Engineering and Technology (20 hours/week is full-time study for the F-1 student visa.) Technical writing and some projects will be omitted in the schedule of 15 hours per week for the tourist visa. Tuition for the 15-hour English for Engineering and Technology program: $2,200 USD
7. Legal English for Business (20 hours/week is full-time study for the F-1 student visa.) Not all listed topics will be covered and some projects will be omitted in the schedule of 15 hours per week for the tourist visa. Tuition for the 15-hour Legal English for Business program: $1,950 USD
위에서 일반적인 어학연수 프로그램에서 Medical English, Legal English, English for Pharmaceutical Studies, English for Engineering and Technology, Business English등 다양한 프로그램을 제공하고 있어서 평소에 영어공부에 갈증을 느끼고 있는 의대생들이나, 법대생등, 약대생들, 공대생들에게 매우 큰 도움이 될 것입니다. 학비는 조금 저렴하고 여유 시간이 많은 만큼 공부와 여행을 병행할 수가 있습니다.
