아틀란타에 있는 명문대학교 Emory University 의 Master of Law LLM에 대해서 말씀을 드리겠습니다. Emory University는 미국에서 명문대학교로서 많은 젊은 분들이 입학하고자 하는 대학교인데 미국과 외국의 법학을 전공한 학생들에게 Master of Law를 제공하고 있습니다. 에모리대학교 LLM은 24학점의 과정인데 이 LLM과정을 훌륭하게 수료한 학생들에게 미국에서 취업을 하거나 아카데믹하게 공부할 수 있는 기회를 제공합니다.
Emory Law School LLM은 일년에 두번의 입학기회가 있는데 1월과 8월에 시작할 수가 있습니다. 그리고 그 LLM과정을 언제 끝마칠 수 있는지는 다음과 같습니다.
- August-start LLMs typically complete their degree the following May.
- January-start LLMs typically complete their degree the following December.
- Apply by April 15 to start in August. Applications are considered for fall on a space available basis through June.
8월에 시작하는 과정은 그 다음해 5월에 학위를 마무리할 수가 있고 1월 시작 LLM은 그해 12월에 과정을 마무리할 수가 있습니다. 올해 8월 시작하기위해서는 입학지원을 4월 15일까지 하여야 합니다. 그리고 그 이후에는 자리가 있을때는 자리가 있으면 지원을 계속 받고 합격을 줄 수가 있습니다.
LLM학생들은 공부하는 동안 predesigned concentration path를 선택할 수가 있는데 그 path는 아래와 같습니다.

- Human Rights Law
- Vulnerability & the Human Condition
- Public Law & Regulation
- Child Law & Policy
그러면 Emory University LLM 입학지원을 위한 admission requirement를 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
Prospective LLM applicants should complete the online application and submit all supporting documents through LSAC. A complete application for the LLM program must include the following:
1. Emory Law Application Form through LSAC
2. $85 Application fee paid via credit card through LSAC
3. Personal statement which describes your objective in pursuing graduate legal study at Emory and highlights any experiences, qualifications or other information you believe to be relevant.
4. A resume or curriculum vitae (CV)
5. Undergraduate and/or graduate transcripts. Emory Law School requires the use of LSAC Credential Assembly Service (CAS) for transcript and credential evaluation.
6. Two letters of recommendation submitted via LSAC’s document assembly service. These should come from individuals who can speak to your ability to succeed in a rigorous academic setting.
7. TOEFL or IELTS score submitted via LSAC’s document assembly service (Foreign applicants only)
A TOEFL score of 600 on the paper-based test, 100 on the Internet-based test, or 250 on the computer-based test is expected.
위에서 보는 것처럼 법학사를 가지고 있어야 하고 영어점수가 중요합니다. IBT 100, PBT 600, CBT 250점이상이어야 합니다. IELTS는 점수가 명시안되어 있지만 7.0이상이어야 합니다.이렇게 영어준브만 잘 할 수 있고 법무법인, 즉 로펌에서 선발되어 지원을 받을 수가 있다면 Emory LLM를 공부할 수가 있습니다. 그런데 요즘 로펌의 경영환경이 안 좋아서인지 변호사들을 선발하여 해외연수 보내던 것이 많이 줄었습니다. 그러나 아직까지는 공무원들은 선발해서 해외연수의 기회를 주기 때문에 영어공부를 열심히 하면 기회를 잡을 수가 있습니다.
