안녕하세요, 김재영원장입니다.
오늘은 저녁에 아주 반가운 손님이 방문해주시길로 하셨습니다. 바로 워싱턴DC에 있는데 고급인턴쉽 전문 비영리기관인 The Washington Center 의 senior director이신 임정란실장님께서 우리 사무실을 방문해주시기로 하셨습니다. 작년에 워싱턴DC출장 갔을때 실장님댁에서 너무나 융슝한 대접을 받아서 감사했었거든요. 그리고 올 4월에는 싱가폴 출장 갔었을때 실장님을 또 뵜었지요. 이렇게 소중한 인연으로 정말 좋은 워싱턴센터를 잘 알려드리도록 최선을 다해야겠습니다.
우리나라 대학생들이 미국으로 인턴쉽을 많이 가는데 솔직히 그 인터쉽이 고급 인턴쉽은 아닙니다. 그러나 The Washington Center TWC에서 제공하는 인턴쉽은 매우 잘 짜여진 프로그램과 국제기구, 글로벌기업, 관공서등에서 인턴쉽이 가능하여 인기가 많습니다. 실제로 대학생들도 평범하게 허접한 인턴쉽을 하면서 푼돈을 버는 인턴쉽보다는 자신의 커리어에 도움이 될 수 있는 전문 인턴쉽기관을 선호하고 있습니다.

The Washington Canter TWC는 단순하게 internship만 제공하는 것이 아래와 같이 3가지로 구성되어 있습니다.
1. The Internship
2. The Evening Course
3. The Colloquium
인턴쉽은 전세계에서 온 다양한 배경을 가지고 있는 학생들에게 government, non-profit, business 관련 기관에서 인턴쉽을 하고 해줍니다. 대부분 풀타임으로 일하고 직원과 같은 기분이 들수 있도록 근무여권을 만들어 줍니다. 변호사들이 재판할 때 도와주거나, 자본시장을 평가하거나, 라디오, 텔레비젼 방송제작을 돕거나 의회 청문회에 참석하실 수가 있습니다. 물론 모든 학생들에게 원하는 기업, 기관으로 100% 배치해드릴려고 노력하나 그럴 수는 없지만 최대한 아래와 같은 기관에 인턴쉽을 할 수 있도록 노력하고 있는 곳이 바로 The Washington Center TWC입니다. 그럼 인턴쉽기관들을 샘플로 아래와 같이 살펴보겠습니다.

위의 기관, 기업들을 보면 정말 입이 딱 벌어질 정도로 반달곰원장이 인턴쉽을 해보고 싶을 정도의 훌륭한 기업들입니다. 대학생들의 전공에 따라서, 그리고 커리어 목표에 따라서 선호하는 기업, 기관을 선택하고 조율해서 인턴쉽기관을 배정해줍니다. 본인이 원하지만은 기관, 회사에서 원하는 학생들의 조건들이 있으므로 당연히 조율을 해야하겠지요.
이렇게 낮에 인턴쉽을 하고 저녁에는 The Evening Courses를 듣게 됩니다. 25개까지의 프로그램중에서 일주일에 하루씩 3시간 강의를 듣게 됩니다. 보통은 자신이 하고 있는 업무랑 관련된 수업을 듣곤 하지요. 당연히 선생님들은 코스 분야에서 인정 받는 능력있는 선생님들이 진행을 해주십시오. 샘플코스 몇개를 보여드리면 아래와 같습니다.

그리고 마지막으로 LEAD Colloquium 입니다. 옛날에는 LEAD Forum이라고 불리우던 것인데 LEAD는 Leadership, Engagement, Achievement, Development의 약자입니다. 주중에 한 코스를 듣는 evening course와는 다르게 매주 큼요일에 유명한 분들을 모셔서 그분들의 특강을 듣는 것이라고 생각하며 편할 것 같습니다. 대표적인 프로그램을 안내하면 아래와 같습니다.
Colloquium Groups
You'll meet regularly with your LEAD instructor in a group of around 16 students to have discussions about critical reflection, leadership and other topics.
Professional Tracks
Along with students who share your professional interests, you'll benefit from panel discussions, site visits and briefings that give you a uniquely D.C. experience.
The Alan K. Simpson-Norman Y. Mineta Leaders Series (SMLS)
During these events, you'll hear the perspectives and experiences of distinguished leaders from the business, nonprofit, media, government and diplomatic fields. Past topics of conversation include the role of the United States in the world, race in America and the 2016 presidential campaign.
Civic Engagement
For more than three decades, civic engagement has been an integral part of The Washington Center’s internship program. The purpose of Civic Engagement at TWC is to help students become well-informed citizen with the ability to understand and define issues of social concern and strategies for addressing them through political and non-political action. You'll further develop the skills needed to make a difference in the community and strengthen your professional development through educational sessions, direct service (either volunteering or advocacy), participate in a policy dialogue, and engage in discussions through the Simpson-Mineta Leaders Series.
Career Boot Camp
You'll prepare for the job search by learning, observing and applying strategies that will make you stand out as a candidate.
Global Citizenship Day (fall and spring only)
Along with students from many other countries, you'll enhance several cross-cultural skills that will arm you to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.
그럼 이렇게 훌륭한 주간에는 워싱턴DC의 정부기관, 비영리기관, 기업등에서 인턴쉽을 하고 주중에는 저녁에 이브닝코스와 포럼에 참여하는 등 단순한 인턴쉽과정이 아닌 훨신 그 이상인 이 프로그램에 참여하기 위해서는 어떤 것이 필요한지 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
Application Requirements
To be eligible, students must:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Attend an accredited college or university and have status as a sophomore or above during the term of their internship.
- Maintain a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. Students with lower GPAs may be considered.
- Receive academic credit from their college or university for their participation in the internship program. TWC does not grant credit directly.
- Have the approval of their campus liaison or a faculty sponsor if their institution does not have a campus liaison.

위에서 보시다 시피 비용이 만만하지 않은 비용입니다. 그러나 웬만한 어학연수나 그리고 학사, 석사과정의 학비에 비하면 많지 않은 수준입니다. 많은 분들이 학교에서 제공하는 장학금을 이용해서 가려고 하나 그것은 자리가 많지 않기에 쉽지가 않습니다. 그리고 장학금이 될지 안될지도 잘 모릅니다. 그러므로 개인이 개인의 발전을 위해서 스스로 결정해서 가는 것이 좋습니다. 자기 인생을 발전시키기 위해서인제 위의 정도의 학비라면 충분히 감당할만한 수준이라고 생각합니다.
