[미국방문학자] 미국 필라델피아 명문대학교 UPenn의 James Joo-Jin Kim Program in Korean Studies 방문학자 프로그램 소개 및 지원안내

오늘은 우리나라 박인비선수가 골프에서 금메달을 딴 기념으로 말도 안되지만 유펜의 한국학연구소의 방문학자 프로그램을 소개해드리겠습니다. 우리가 보통 방문학자라고 하면 visiting scholar를 의미해서 교수들이나 박사들을 이야기하지만 방문학자라는 말에는 더 넓은 의미로 visiting researcher, research fellow, visiting fellow, professional fellow, professional associate등을 포함하고 있습니다. 즉, 꼭 교수들만이 아닌, 박사학위자만이 아닌 어느 분야에서 전문성이 있거나 언론인들, 공무원들 등 학교에 도움이 되겠다 싶은 분들이 방문학자로 초대되어집니다. 오늘은 한국의 방문학자를 초대할 수 있는 University of Pennsylvania UPenn의 한국학프로그램인 James Joo-Jin Kim program in Korean Studies에 대해서 안내를 해드리겠습니다.

원래 이 프로그램은 1997년에 유펜에서 Center for Korean Studies라는 이름으로 설립되었었습니다. 그러던 것을 2011년 James Joo-Jin Kim이라는 분이 이 센터에 기부를 하면서 프로그램명이 James Joo-Jin Kim program in Korea Studies로 변경되었습니다. 명문 탑 비즈니스스쿨들이 자신들의 비즈니스스쿨에 거액을 기부한 분들의 이름을 따서 이름을 변경하는 것과 마찬가지 경우입니다.

그럼 James Joo-Jin Kim이라는 분은 누구인지 함 알아볼까요. 이분은 세계에서 가장 큰 반도체 packaging 과 테스트서비스 제공회사중의 하나인 Amkor Tachnology의 회장이십니다. 1968년도에 Amkor를 설립하였습니다. 그리고 Amkor이전에는 Villanova University에서 학생들을 가르쳤었습니다. 유펜과 깊은 인연을 맺고 보드멤버등을 역임하면서 UPenn발전에 많은 이바지를 하였었습니다.

바로 UPenn의 James Joo-Jin Kim Program in Korea Studies 에 Visiting Affiliate이라는 프로그램이 있어서 방문학자로서 갈 수가 있습니다. 구체적으로 3가지로 나누어지는데 visiting scholars, research associates, visiting fellows로 나누어집니다.  그럼 그 자격을 구체적으로 안내해드리겠습니다.

(1) Visiting Scholar Eligibility and Expectations
Visiting Scholars are expected to:

1. Hold a tenure-stream position at an academic institution
2. Reside in the Philadelphia area for the duration of the residency
3. Actively participate in Kim Program events, especially in attendance at speaker events
4. Give one (1) required guest lecture in either English or Korean
5. Pay an administrative processing fee of $5,000* required (payable in check upon arrival at Penn)

(2) Research Associate Eligibility and Expectations
Research Associates are expected to:

1. Hold a Ph.D. or a terminal graduate or professional degree from an accredited institution
2. Pay an administrative processing fee of $2,000* required (payable in check upon arrival at Penn)

(3) Visiting Fellow Eligibility and Expectations
Visiting Fellows are expected to:

1. Hold a prominent position within the fields of government, research, civics, business, politics, media, or activism
2. Pay an administrative processing fee of $7,000* required (payable in check upon arrival at Penn)

* Visiting affiliates seeking yearly renewal are also subject to respective administrative processing fees

위의 항목중에서 공무원, 언론인, 기업에서 스폰 받으신 분들에게 해당하는 프로그램은 바로 visiting fellow 프로그램입니다. 만약에 초청이 되면 그 학교에 체류하는 행정비용으로 연간 7000달러를 내면 됩니다. 그리고 보통 최장 체류할 수 있는 기간이 1년인데 1년 더 연장하고 싶은 분들은 학교와 협의해야하고 administration fee로 7000달러를 다시 내야합니다.

그럼 위의 세가지 프로그램에 지원하기 위해서 필요한 admission requirements를 살펴보겠습니다.

Required Application Materials

1. A cover letter, addressed to the James Joo-Jin Kim Program in Korean Studies, clearly stating the form of affiliation sought (Visiting Scholar, Research Associate, or Visiting Fellow).
2. Curriculum vitae with the following information included:
1. Home and business addresses.
2. Phone and fax numbers, and e-mail address.
3. Date and place of birth.
4. Complete list of publications and professional activities.
3. Research proposal outlining the research that will be performed. The proposal should be no longer than three pages, and include the name of the Penn faculty member with whom you wish to work.
4. Proof of sufficient financial support from your financial institution or outside organization.

1. Proof of English language proficiency, by use of one of several established “objective measurements” set forth by Penn Global: 
1. If no such documentation is available, we may ask to conduct an interview to determine English proficiency. The interview will be conducted by a certified Oral Proficiency Interviewer.
2. A copy of unexpired passport, showing the picture, passport number, and expiration date.
3. A one-time, non-refundable processing fee of $300 (to be credited toward the full processing fee). A scanned receipt of the wire transfer should be included as part of the application package. Please see the bottom of this page for wire directions.

위의 서류를 보면 다른 한국학센터들과 크게 다르지는 않습니다만, 연구계힉서가 최정 3페이지이내에서 작성해야 하는 것하고 영어점수를 제출해야하는데 아래와 같은 점수가 없을시에는 UPenn 부설어학원인 ELP선생님과 영어인터뷰를 해서 통과하여야 합니다. 영어시험을 봐서 점수를 만들는 것이 편할 수도 있습니다.

• TOEFL Internet Based Test (scores must be less than 2 years old)	80 cumulative, min 18 speaking
  IELTS	6 cumulative, min 6 speaking
  ACTFL OPI	Intermediate High
  BULATS	B2 overall, min 75 speaking
  Cambridge	FCE
  TOEIC	Listening 400 Reading 385 Speaking 160 Writing 150

IELTS 6.0은 크게 어려운 점수는 아닙니다. 그런데 speaking을 6.0요구하는 것이 좀 어려울 수 있습니다. 그리고 IBT 80점인데 Speaking이 18점이상이므로 오히려 IBT준비가 더 쉬울 수 있습니다. 그리고 토익도 가능합니다. HULT MBA도 토익점수를 받는데 그 기준이 거의 비슷합니다. 일반 토익시험점수 785점과 토익 스피킹 160,Writing 150이상이어야 합니다.
