오늘은 Black Bear를 마스코트로 가지고 있는 University of Maine 의 학사과정 입학에 대해서 안내를 해드리겠습니다. 지난번에는 University of Main의 MBA를 소개해드렸습니다만, 오늘은 학부과정을 소개해드릴려고 합니다. 어떤 전공과정들이 있고 그 전공들을 이수할려면 어떤 입학조건이 필요한지를 살펴보겠습니다.
메인주의 Flagship 대학교라고 하지만은 그다지 크지는 않습니다. 그리고 랭킹도 뛰어나지는 않습니다. 그러나 메인주의 대표주립대학교로서 메인주에서는 알아주는 대학입니다. University of Maine의 랭킹을 대략적으로 살펴보면 아래와 같습니다. 현재 구글에 나와있는 순위는 아래와 같습니다.

미국에 수천개의 대학교가 있기에 US News 랭킹에서 168위를 기록한 것도 매우 훌륭한 랭킹입니다. 그러나 우리나라는 항상 탑 10, 탑 50, 탑 100을 이야기해서 그 순위가 좋아 보이지는 않습니다만 메인주에서는 최고의 대학이므로 메인주에 취업을 하거나 살고자 할 경우에는 매우 좋은 선택이 될 수가 있습니다. 그럼 이런 University of Maine에 어떤 학부과정들이 있는지 알아보겠습니다.

정말 전공과목들이 많지요. 학생들에게 인기가 많은 전공들은 역시나 비즈니스, 엔지니어링, 컴퓨터사이언스 들입니다. 그외에도 자신의 적성에 맞추어서 전공을 선택할 수가 있습니다. 그럼 이러한 전공과목에 합격하기 위해서는 어떤 입학조건이 필요할지 아래에서 알아보도록 하겠습니다.
A complete application for first-year and transfer applicants includes:
- a completed application (either the Common Application or the University of Maine System Application)
- an official high school transcript
- SAT or ACT scores (waived for transfers with more than 12 completed credits or applicants age 20 and older)
- official college transcripts for all attempted college coursework
- an essay
- a school recommendation (first-year applicants only)
- an application fee of $40.
위에서 보시다시피 SAT/ACT는 12학점이상 받은 편입학생들과 나이가 20살 이상인 학생들은 면제입니다. 그러면 가장 중요한 영어조건을 알아보도록 하겠습니다.
Submit an English language proficiency test:
- TOEFL: minimum score of 79 (iBT) or 550 (iTP), institution code 3916
- IELTS: minimum score of 6.5
- Waived language test if:
- native speaker of English (e.g., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, U.K.)
- SAT Verbal score is 550 or higher
- ACT English score is 24 or higher
- high school transcript clearly states that English is the language of instruction of all subjects
- student studying in the U.S. or Canada for two or more years and not in an ESL track
- student has successfully passed an English Composition course at a U.S. institution with a grade of C or higher, even if student has not studied in the U.S. for two or more years.
- Students who do not submit a language test score or do not meet the language proficiency requirement but have a strong academic record are encouraged to attend the Intensive English Institute for language training until sufficient proficiency is acquired to start their degree.
영어는 IBT 79, IELTS 6.5이상이면 됩니다. 그리고 영어점수가 없거나 기준을 못 맞추면 University of Maine의 부설어학원인 Intensive English Institute에서 전공이 원하는 수준의 영어실력을 갖추면 입학할 수 있는 조건부입학도 잘 되어 있습니다. 미국의 북동부에 위치한, 우리나라사람들과는 친숙하지 않아서 잘 모르는 경향이 있는데 그만큼 한국학생들이 없는 곳이라 공부하기에 좋습니다.
