지난 12월 마이애미에서 있었던 ICEF Miami Workshop행사에서 반달곰원장은 미국의 많은 대학교들을 만났습니다. MBA 로 유명한 학교들도 만나고 대학부설어학원도 만나고 하면서 좋은 정보들을 얻게 되었는데 그 중에서 가장 크 소득중의 하나라고 말씀드릴 수 있는 대학교와 프로그램이 바로 University of Alabama 의 English Language Institute ELI 프로그램입니다.
학교 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 알라바마대학교는 알라바마에 있는 주립대학교입니다. 이 학교 대학부설어학원 ELI의 디렉터인 Bill을 만났는데 Bill과 이야기하면서 UA ALI가 반달곰원장이 어학연수를 하였던 University of Delaware ELI와 비슷한 컨셉과 시스템을 가지고 있는 것을 알게되었습니다. 실제로 Bill은 반달곰원장을 만나자마자 UD ELI의 디렉터인 Dr. 스캇 스티븐스 이야기와의 친분을 이야기하면서 같이 일할 것을 권유하더군요! 매년미국에서는 NAFSA라는 회의가 있는데 Bill은 스캇과 방을 같이 사용하는 룸메이트라고 하더군요.
그러면서 UA ELI와 UD ELI는 6레벨을 가지고 있는 것하며 조건부입학 프로그램을 가지고 있는 것등 유사하다는 점을 강조 하였습니다. 반달곰원장이 직접 경험했던 UD ELI이기에 UA ELI도 그와 비슷한 시스템이고 미국주립대학교 부설어학원이라면 충분히 한국 학생들에게도 도움이 많이 되겠다라는 생각이 들었습니다.
그리고 과거에는 UD ELI가 학비가 저렴한 편이었으나 요근래 학비가 올라서 학비 메리트가 없어진 상태에서 UA ELI의 학비 메리트는 한국학생들에게 충분히 어필할 것 같습니다. 그래서 반달곰원장은 University of Alabama ELI 프로그램을 적극적으로 소개하려고 합니다. 먼저 어떤 프로그램이 있는지부터 수고해드리겠습니다.
Intensive English Program: 6레벨로 구성되어 있고 한주에 20시간- 24시간 수업을 듣습니다. ELI 선생님들은 모두 TESL석사학위를 가지신 실력있는 선생님들이십니다. 일년에 6 Session이 있는데 그 기간은 8주 또는 6주 과정입니다. 시작월은 1월, 3월 5월, 6월 8월, 10월 등입니다. 자세한 일정과 비용은 아래와 같습니다.

Session Length
Fall and spring sessions are 8 weeks long, and summer sessions are 6 weeks long. All sessions include at least 148 hours of classroom instruction. Half-sessions are available at the beginning of each full session (4 weeks in fall and spring, 3 weeks in summer).

Costs to attend the ELI are comparable to or in many cases lower than those of other intensive English programs in the US. All costs are listed in US dollars.

- Students should plan to bring approximately $200 – $300 per session for personal expenses.
Additional Information - Half-sessions are available at the beginning of each full session. Starting dates for full and half-sessions are the same. The estimated cost of a half-session is $2,793 in the Fall and Spring and $2,721 in the Summer.
- Session costs typically increase slightly each year in August, beginning with the Fall 1 session.
- The ELI’s summer sessions are designed so that students may choose to complete either one or two full-time sessions in 12 weeks. Students on an F-1 (student) visa should refer to the ELI Student Handbook for information on maintaining full-time status during the summer sessions.

UD ELI의 8주 학비가 $3152 인데 반하여 UA ELI의 학비는 $1956입니다. 물론 지역적인 부분 물가 등이 있지만 학비에 민감한 학생들의 경우는 UA ELI를 선택하는 것도 좋을 것 같습니다. 그리고 Intensive English Program 뿐만 아니라 UA ELI에는 UA 학사와 석사(MBA포함)에 입학할 수 있는 조건부 프로그램이 있습니다. 그 자세한 내용을 보면 아래와 같습니다.
Pathway to UA
Pathway to UA is offered to degree-seeking students who need a higher level of English proficiency.
Pathway to UA is designed for students who
- Wish to study for a degree (bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate)
- Need to improve their English skills
Pathway to UA students will
- Receive conditional admission to The University of Alabama
- Enroll in the ELI’s Intensive English Program (IEP)
- Enroll in UA classes for credit when ready
Pathway to UA: Length of Study
- 2-12 months, based on entry level of English proficiency. For example:
- 73-78 iBT = 2-4 months
- 67-72 iBT = 4-6 months
- 61-66 iBT = 6-8 months
- below 61 iBT = 8-12 month
