US News & World Report 2020랭킹에서 Best National Universities 부문 28위를 차지한 곳이 University of North Carolina Chapel Hill입니다. 미국 최초의 공립대학으로 1795년에 설립된 UNC Chapel Hill은 19,000여명의 학생과 11,000여명의 대학원생이 재학중입니다. UNC Chapel Hill의 내년도 가을학기 입학을 위해 알아야 하는 몇 가지 중요한 정보에 대해서 설명드리겠습니다.
UNC 대학에 신입생으로 입학 지원하려면, Early Action과 Regular Decision 중 정해야 하며, 다음의 일정까지 신청서를 제출해야 합니다.
- Early Action : 10월 15일
- Regular Decision : 1월 15일
위의 입학 신청일까지 온라인 신청서와 입학 신청비를 제출하는 것이고, 고등학교 성적과 추천서와 기타 서류 등은 조기는 11월 1일까지, 일반전형은 2월 1일까지 제출해야 합니다.

[1년간 SAT/ACT 시험 성적 제출 면제]
미국 대학 입시를 준비하는 학생들은 SAT 시험을 볼 계획을 일찍부터 세웁니다. 올해는 워낙 특수한 상황이라 시험을 치를 수 있는 공식시험센터가 문을 닫거나 시험 연기로 SAT 시험을 준비하는 학생들이 많은 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 이런 상황이 한국에서만 벌어지는 일이 아닌 전 세계적인 일이기에 미국 대학의 입학처에서는 이런 상황을 이해하고 입시에 적용을 하고 있습니다.
노스캐롤라이나 채플힐 대학교의 입학 전형에서도 SAT/ACT 성적 제출에 대해서 조정된 정책을 발표했습니다.
코로나 때문에 2021년 가을학기 입학에 지원하는 지원자에게 요구되는 SAT/ACT 제출을 1년간 면제한다는 내용으로 이 시험성적이 있다면, 제출할 수 있기에 이 대학도 Optional로 이해하면 됩니다. 채플힐 캠퍼스뿐만 아니라 이 시험성적 제출 면제는UNC 시스템에 있는 모든 대학의 입학전형에 반영됩니다.
NOTE: Because of COVID-19, the UNC System has approved a one-year waiver of the SAT or ACT requirement for candidates who are applying for Fall 2021 admission. This waiver means that you may apply whether or not you’ve taken either test. It also means that, if you’ve taken either test, you may share your scores and have us consider them.
2021년 입학 이후에는 기존대로 공식시험 성적을 제출해야 하며, 두 시험의 Writing 파트는 필요하지 않습니다. SAT나 ACT중 어느 시험을 더 우위에 두지 않고 똑같이 평가합니다.
For students applying to terms beyond Fall 2021, we require either an SAT or ACT score for all first-year applicants and sophomore transfer applicants (those with less than 60 transferable credit hours upon enrollment at Carolina). Please note that the writing portion of either the SAT or ACT is no longer required nor recommended. Additionally, we don’t have a preference for one test over the other, so you may submit either score (or both).

어느 대학은 영어 과목에서의 점수나 SAT/ACT 점수를 기반으로 한 영어 숙련도 자격 조건을 면제해주는 경우가 있지만, 안타깝게도 UNC 채플힐은 해당사항이 없고, 다음의 조건 중 하나를 대학 등록 시점까지 충족한다면, 공인성적 제출을 면제해 줍니다.
You will have lived for at least four years in a country where English is the primary language.
OR
You will have attended a school for at least four years where English is the primary language of instruction.
[UNC 지원 시 에세이]
UNC Chapel Hill에 지원하는 학생은 250-650 words 제한의 장문 에세이와 200-250 words 제한의 두 개의 단문 에세이를 작성해야 합니다. 이 에세이는 지원자를 평가하는 중요한 도구가 되며, 이것은 단연 입학 허가를 위한 자료로 쓰일뿐만 아니라 장학금과 Excel@Carolina 수혜자를 선발할 때도 참고하게 되니 작성에 신경을 기울여야 합니다.
UNC-specific short answer prompts: You’ll choose two of the following prompts to respond to in 200-250 words.
s Expand on an aspect of your identity – for example, your religion, culture, race, sexual or gender identity, affinity group, etc. How has this aspect of your identity shaped your life experiences thus far?
s If you could change one thing about where you live, what would it be and why?
s Describe someone who you see as a community builder. What actions has that person taken? How has their work made a difference in your life?
그리고, 나머지 하나의 에세이는 Common Application 에세이로 아래의 질문 중 하나를 골라 250-650 단어 제한으로 작성해야 합니다. 아래의 질문은 이미 여러 대학교의 2020-2021입학 전형 사이클을 거론할 때 설명을 한 부분입니다. 자신의 상황에 가장 맞는 에세이 주제를 골라 작성하시기 바랍니다.
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
