우리나라 대한민국의 위상이 점점 커나가는 것은 사실입니다. 비록 미국과 중국사이에서 힘든 외교를 하면서 살아가고 있지만 역사상 지금만큼 한국의 이미지, 존재감을 드러낸 적이 있을까 싶습니다. 너무 초반에 거창하게 들어갔지만 반달곰원장이 이런 말을 하는 이유는 이제 미국의 많은 학교들이 한국을 알고 공부하자는 취지에서 Center for Korean Studies, Center for Korean Research등을 세우고 학사, 석사 과정도 제공하고 전세계 한국에 대하여 관심을 가지고 있는 학자들을 초빙하여 연구하게 만들고 있습니다.
이런 한국학센터 프로그램을 가지고 있는 학교들을 대략적으로 살펴보면 아래와 같습니다.

위의 대학교이외에도 많은 학교들이 한국학 프로그램을 제공하고 있습니다. 그래서 오늘은 그중에서 반달곰원장이 아직 정보를 올리지 않은 학교인 Columbia University의 Center for Korean Research 프로그램에 대해서 알아보려고 합니다. 더 자세학 말씀드리면 Columbia University 내의 Weatherhead East Asian Institute 의 Center for Korean Research에 Visiting Scholar Program/Professional Fellow Program로 가기 위한 방법을 알아볼려고 합니다. 그러면 콜롬비아대학교 한국학센터에 있는 Professional Fellow Program은 어떤 것인지 살펴보겠습니다.
먼저 Professional Fellow Program에는 Professional Fellow와 Professional Associate이라는 카테고리로 나누어 지는데 아래와 같습니다.
Categories
Under the Professional Fellows Program, prospective candidates can enroll in one of the following two categories: Professional Fellow or Professional Associate.
In both categories, the Institute offers enrollment for one or two semesters.
- Professional Fellow
- Opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of Columbia’s distinguished experts in the participant’s field of research
- Access to various University libraries and other facilities
- Option to audit courses throughout the University with the permission of the course instructor
- Opportunity to publicize the results of their research
- Office space (shared)
- Office services (mailbox, telephone and access to a photocopier, fax machine and computer)
Professional Associate
An Institute Associate is an inexpensive alternative to the Professional Fellows Program. Associates enjoy all the benefits of a Professional Fellow except office space and telephone access.

Program Fee
Professional Fellow: $15,000 per semester
Professional Associate: $10,000 per semester
Please Note: Professional Fellows and Professional Associates are responsible for their own travel and living expenses.
두개의 카테고리가 거의 차이가 없는데 제공되는 사무실과 전화가 있느냐에 따라서 달라지고 그에 따라서 비용도 달라집니다. Professional Fellow의 경우 학기당 15000달러이니 2학기 1년이면 30000달러의 비용을 내야합니다. Professional Associate은 학기당 1만불로 1년에는 2만불의 비용을 내야 합니다.

Applying To The Program
Those interested in applying to the Professional Fellows Program, please send (email, fax or postal mail) the following materials to the address listed below:
- Application (Download Application)
- Current Curriculum Vitae in English and in Native Language
- Research Proposal (2-3 double spaced pages)
- Financial support/guarantee statement from applicant’s employer or personal bank statement indicating his/her ability to cover living expenses as well as program fees*
- TOEFL test results or equivalent measurement of English language ability
- Headshot photograph
- Two letters of recommendation or two references
* In addition to program fees, you will need at least $2800 per month for yourself to cover living expenses. If your family intends to accompany you, an additional $1,000 per month for your spouse and $500 per month per child is required.
Deadlines
- To begin research on January 1st (Spring Semester) applications must be submitted by October 1 of the preceding year.
- To begin research on September 1st (Fall Semester) applications must be submitted by May 15 of that year.
가장 중요한 것이 역시 영문이력서와 연구계획서입니다. 그리고 영어점수입니다. 요즘 방문학자 visiting fellow에 대한 초청기준이 강화되어서 영어졈수를 요구하는 경우가 많습니다. 그러므로 영어에 대한 준비를 잘해야합니다. 그리고 다른 학교와는 좀 다르게 추천서를 2부 제출해야 합니다.
